I'm assuming you're meaning both as one,if so then,from experience,if you like a friend from the start,don't end up in the dreaded"friend zone",cause sometimes it can ruin a relationship period,and then there's the "be friends first"!

The few, and I mean very few partners i've had have always been my best friend at the time anyway, but not in a friends with benefits type of way. I mean my parents for instance are married, and they are best friends too.
