This Is How Fast America Changes Its Mind

Eleven years after Massachusetts became the first state to allow same-sex couples to marry, the Supreme Court has now extended that right nationwide. The decision came after a wave of gay marriage legalization: 28 states from 2013 to 2015, with 36 overall prior to the Court's ruling. Such widespread acceptance in a short amount of time isn't a phenomenon unique to gay marriage. Social change in the U.S. appears to follow a pattern: A few pioneer states get out front before the others, and then a key event—often a court decision or a grassroots campaign reaching maturity—triggers a rush of state activity that ultimately leads to a change in federal law.

We looked at six big issues—interracial marriage, prohibition, women’s suffrage, abortion, same-sex marriage, and recreational marijuana — to show how this has happened in the past, and may again in the very near future.[b/]

If the pattern holds, the marijuana legalization movement may take far less time than other issues to gain widespread acceptance. Though the pattern of social change may have remained largely the same over the years, change is happening faster now. It took almost 200 years before the Supreme Court disposed of the last state laws banning interracial marriage. The prohibition movement spanned seven decades before passage of the 18th Amendment. Now, gay couples have gone from not being able to marry in any state to being able to marry in all 50 in little more than a decade.

The time from the trigger point to federal action is even shorter. It took 19 years for the Supreme Court to follow a California court in striking down interracial marriage bans. The Supreme Court struck down bans on same-sex marriage only two years after its first pivotal decision on the issue.

To the racially oppressed, discriminated against, change could not take place soon enough.

And yet:
within my living memory:
- the top rap music artist was White (Vanilla Ice)
- the top golfer was Black (Tiger W)
- the centuries long tradition of White male presidents has been broken (Obama)
- same sex marriage is now the law of the land ...

Welcome to m2.

I've wondered about the U.S. discriminations, in context of those elsewhere.

India's caste system for example.
I gather there's been political effort to get rid of that.

But I've never been there, and don't really know how successfully / completely it has been addressed.

The U.S. still has problems.

I thank god I'm not forced to try to endure the cesspool of human misery in Syria & ISIL / elsewhere.

This is why I rarely use the quotes of famous people, which is usually the height of laziness and pretension. I make up my own quotes.

Patriotism is not necessarily the conviction that my country is superior because I was born in it. Patriotism is the realization that my country it superior because I have lived in other countries, traveled to all 7 continents and I am proud to live in my adopted country because I know it is the greatest country in the world, the U.S. of A.!!!

the pretense is omitting the attribute.

I may be a mental midget.
But as I stand on the shoulders of giants, I'm sometimes mistaken for being nearly adequate stature.

By what criterion?

Asians tend to score better on academic tests.
China is larger in land-mass.
South Africa has more zebras.

Loyalty to one's nation and People may not be a serious problem.

How is it the greatest? My dear man, where to I begin? It is obvious. You can start with the Constitution to its beautiful landscape to its melting pot to its aid to other countries to its being a trendsetter for all others to its democratic process to its global leadership. Granted, our leaders have not always been perfect but we all stumble from time to time. The foundations on which the USA are based are strong and admired by all.

But it's a mistake to conflate subjective preference (which you & I may share) with objective intrinsic superiority.

By what criterion?
- Wealth? The U.S. does not have the highest per capita life on Earth.
- Happiness? What I've read indicates that belongs to Denmark.
- etc.

I like the U.S. too.
I live here.
As a teen I volunteered during time of War, to serve in the U.S. military.

So do not mistake my scientific dispassion for lack of appreciation.

I don't think it's appropriate to gloat, and our friends and allies in France, the U.K., Germany, and China have reasons to be proud as well.

I'll skip the word "better", and stick with the word "different".

TY one & all for your input; and what I enjoyed and brought it all front & center to me was the 'VISUAL IMAGE' of the graphs and how much of 'ALL THOSE 6' hot button issues have occurred just since 'I' was born!

We live in a remarkable world and our technology has 'KICKED A$$' and we 'ALL' are so more able to:
a) do want we want for entertainment/social settings
b) be what we want for job
c) marry whom ever we chose too
d) go where ever we so desire to live
Certainly there are things that need 'FIXING/CHANGE' but look at that graph for the speed in which most of our 'EQUALITY' social issues have occurred and it rocks my total being :banana:

This topic and those graphs just really hit my :heart: this morning; and for all the hate and vitriol that gets pushed & pulled - shoved & spewed...we continue as a GREAT NATION TO STUMBLE FORWARD and do great things for 'ALL OF OUR CITIZENS'!

Gloat? Merely semantics. I will be proud of whatever I wish, especially the USA!!! One more reason is that everyone would give their eye tooth to live here. And I am tired of seeing my country bashed by people with penis envy.

George Bernard Shaw was a disgrace.

He was a marxist that supported eugenics and was a huge fan of Hitler. He was a racist and a bigot. He wanted the lower classes sterilized or exterminated.
