Good Day my good friends of M2, I know its been a hiatus since I posted a forum well your boy is back, shots out to my " Opinion Minions" out there in M2 Land. My good folks let me ask you a question, with all the advance technology we have today the tablets, touch screen android phones, gaming consoles with headsets especially if you have X Box consoles, GPS systems in vehicles, cable tv with dvr recorders, Netflix, and more. I can remember a time growing up in the 80's if we had a define a word we had the Webster dictionary. Kids to today have tablets & Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, and more to do it for you. I can remember just having a house phone or landline phone to communication to folks. Now a days, we have camera's computers , Skype , even picture mail today. On one, hand this new era od technology is great, its convenient, its fun, and less of a pain to do things for us. One the other hand, is technology making us a lazy generation?, or is it drumming the world? Where do you stand on this good topic? Personality I love this advanced age in our day & age, its make life easier and more exciting but some may feel its dumming us, making us vulnerable to robots and technology. Spill the hot tea tell me if you like the advance technology today or are you more hands on more reliable to the old fashioned way doing things?
we'll talk soon Later!

Myself I love all the new technology...But too much of anything is not good for us..

I love that I can google information and learn so much more in a short time..

I do not like that many rely on technology that it takes social skills away...

Like anything too much is not always the best route to go..

It tends to make many not socialize with others on a one on one bases...

It all depends on how much time one tends to use technology instead of one one one with other people.. Too many times people tend to text instead of calling anymore.. Therefore making society take a step back in socializing with others face to face..

Technology is great in certain ways, but of course it is dumbing us down. Most people don't read, think, or do math without a calculator any more. Technology has replaced your brain. The proof is in the apalling writing we see on a daily basis... People are functionally illiterate nowadays.

is technology making us a lazy generation?

It's not "making" a lazy generation, it's "allowing" a lazy generation.
People are inherently lazy.
It's called efficiency.
Built into being human is minimum effort for maximum gain.
Comes from thousands of years of grocery stores that ran away from you or had to be dug out of the ground and the only healthcare being your immune system.
A lot of wasted energy or effort meant you died.
It's why you have fat at all, to store energy.
People are energy hoarders if they can be.
That influences behavior. e.g. work smarter not harder.

is it drumming the world?

I don't know what this means.

Where do you stand on this good topic?

It's all just change.
I stand where I've stood since about 1987 when I realized you can't rely on other people. They're good for generic work, if you want anything specialized to your needs or wants do it yourself...(along with never use credit, if you can't afford it then do without, and if you are going to buy something buy it based on quality, but that's probably not relevant here).

Other than that, it's just part of the hyper-specialization or Fordism trend that affected the U.S., and its infecting the world with its brand of capitalism, just as much as Christianity or utilitarianism.

depends upon how its used,, when its used to REPLACE old ways , I think it makes us dependent and therefore weaker/lazier

whent its used/taught to complement and in ADDITION to old ways, it can embellish and make us more capable/stronger

I think most technology, unfortunately is touted and intended to REPLACE what was done before,, which also replaces alot of the character and value and strength that the old ways required,,,

waving WELCOME back

I'm new here so nice to meet u

Personally, I'm not really into the "technology" thingy and I too miss the old times when we did all that u said above

Happy to say, that in my family, although we're all full of devices and gadgets, yet there is a good balance of old skul and new

Last night we had an Eid al adha celebration
Both my 2 sisters along with their kids came over to my mom's house

We had a wonderful time
I taught my nieces to cook (really enjoyed that), played scrabble, played cards, did some "just dance" sessions and just had a great time with technology and without it

So I guess I would have to say,

BALANCE IS THE KEY to life

Bless u lovely peeps

Love

One problem with all of the technology in the world, what does it run off of? Electricity. What would happen to all the lazy kids if they couldn't charge or power their technology?

I have a little place in the country, out of cell phone range and doesn't have electric, other than the main house. You should see the kids after a day or so when they can't play on the internet, or text. They loose interest in their cell phones, tablets, etc. Then they go hiking, fishing, skipping rocks, stuff us older folks did prior to all this technology.

Like all things, technology has its good and bad points. I think it's nice that you can connect so easily with people all over the world, and have access to information with the touch of a button. The only drawback is sometimes we're bombarded with a lot of negativity, but we have the option not to read or watch those things...so yeah technology is good. And it's here to stay so everyone needs to get on board, old-fashioned or not.....

I have managed to not only retain, but actually rationally expand my childhood resistance to all variations on the codger rants about "the kids today have no idea" and "civilisation is going down the tubes since I was young."

Since I've studied a LOT of History, I know that the "technological advancement causes laziness" refrain has been sung by every generation that saw change occur.

When I was a kid, I had to learn to type on a manual typewriter, use a dictionary AND a thesaurus, find phone numbers in a big book, go to libraries for all further information, and actually HAND WRITE any messages I wanted or needed to convey to others. I built a huge barn-sized storage building worth of these skills, only to tumble into a world that places absolutely no value on them whatsoever.

As a father, one of my frustrations/wry observations has been that over 95% of everything I worked so hard to learn, precisely so that I could help my children have better lives than I did, has turned to garbage by the time they reached the age where I might have taught it to them.

I do NOT want to turn the clock back. Because of the changes, aside from driving me to an early grave from stress, the world has become vastly safer and easier to navigate for my children.

safer and easier only so long as technology doesnt malfunction and we are again in need of some more 'natural' abilities and adaptability,,

By the way, something to ponder...

before the advent of all this technology, the reason you didn't see so many incredibly ignorant people saying and publishing such ridiculous nonsense filled with misspellings and grammatical terror attacks, wasn't because people were better educated.

It's because until now, those people couldn't gain access to the tools to express themselves at all. They were always there before too, you just didn't hear from them.

I disagree,,

we have more access to them, but there are also more of them because there is less emphasis on these things when technology is the status quo and does it for us on the regular,,,,

Yes, but my point is, that that danger has ALWAYS been with us. Always.

As soon as we figured out how to grow more food by farming, the population grew, and became dependent on farming always being done. When a big climate change happened, people died off in droves.

Once we set up large nation states which didn't require the entire population to fight roving bands of hunter-predator peoples every day, the population grew, and fewer of them learned to fight using crude weapons. Empires arose, and vast oppressions of large populations occurred as a result, and again, the disaster of War reaped thousands upon thousands of lives.

I agree, these things have always been there,, but by replacing options we become weaker

by adding options we become stronger

when tech is used to REPLACE other ways, we are weaker, especially when that technology does more of the work FOR us

when tech is used to COMPLIMENT other ways, we are stronger, especially when a balance is struck between being able to do the work ourselves while knowing how to utilize the tech to do it for us,,,

No argument with that, just a shrug. We get what we get. People have often tried to force the retention of older tech and skill sets, but so far the closest they've come has been to erect things like small replica towns where a few actors and crafts people life life in the old way, for the entertainment of tourists.
