Rancher dies in shootout with deputies planning to kill bull

COUNCIL, Idaho (AP) — A crash between a car and a bull near a tiny Idaho town turned into a bizarre tragedy when an armed rancher confronted Idaho deputies planning to shoot the animal that was charged rescuers, leading to a gunbattle that left the well-known businessman dead, authorities said Monday.

A Subaru station wagon struck a bull on a highway Sunday just north of Council, a town of roughly 800 people, and Adams County sheriff's deputies responded to the crash. The injured bull began charging emergency responders as they worked to get the driver and passenger out of the car, said Idaho State Police, the agency that is investigating the shooting.

"The bull was very agitated and was aggressive to emergency services, as well as the other cars coming up and down the highway," Adams County Sheriff Ryan Zollman said.

Jack Yantis, the bull's owner, arrived with a rifle just as deputies decided to put down the animal. There was an altercation, and Yantis and two deputies all fired their weapons, State Police said in a statement.

Yantis died at the scene, and one deputy suffered a minor injury. The bull also was shot and killed.

Both deputies, whose names have not been released, were placed on paid leave.

"To the best of my knowledge, this is the first officer-involved shooting that Adams County has ever had," Zollman said. "This is going to be a big hit to this community. The gentleman involved, Mr. Yantis, was a well-known cattle rancher around here. It's just a sad deal for everybody involved, for the whole community."

Both people inside the Subaru were taken to a local hospital by air ambulance. Their conditions and names were not known Monday.

Perhaps they could have called the EPA and given them a chance to use all their new automatic weapons and body armor as well?

Like they couldn't put their vehicles between a single bull and the rescuers? A road block.... guess it was easier to shoot the bull and its owner. Probably much less paper work

Couldn't they let the rancher do his job?
He could have been able to take the bull away. The bull could have been raised up by hand

I thought it was better to try and solve things without using guns.
Guns are a last resort

Are police gun happy over there.
Ours don't wear them on themselves.
They use others equipment or they call the arm defenders.

The cops didn't have to kill the bull.
It seems it was more a matter, of cops proving to the rancher, and to the bull, that cops are superior to livestock. It's that whole opposable thumbs thing.

Most rancher/farmers in the U.S., not only know what tranqs to use, they often keep them nearby.

Ironically, even non farmers/ranchers who live in farm/ranch country, know what tranqs to use, and how to obtain them quickly in an emergency.

This to me, seems like a cop having a tantrum and showing his @ss, because he couldn't have total control.

Nonlethal options were available.

No respect for the law
The cops here do a lot in the community outside work to.
The reason for that is to connect with the people on another level.
They do a lot of school visit to connect with the community.
The kids love it.
One kid was new to the school, came from a rough family. Said to me why are the pigs here? Who has drugs?
That's all he knew ftom home.
I had a lot of explaining to do.
In the end the cop and kid became good friends which kept the kid on the right path.

well one thing - the city i live in, Houston Texas, has more people than all of New Zealand and it's Islands... in roughly about 200 square mile radius... and it's only the 4th or 5th largest city in the US... the more people, the less friendly everyone is, including cops...

It is hard to comprehend that NZ is only a speck in the ocean where you have huge countries like yours, Canada, UK even Aussie. We have just over 4 million people and 1 million in our largest city but I can understand where there is a lot of people I guess the police have to be ready in all situations and need to carry guns on them not in the boot of their cars.

I personally still think that rancher had a right to see to his bull and there could have been another way to avoid deaths.

You can say that again. The greater the population in a small area .. people will function just like caged rats.
It is NOT safe or comfortable or wise to be friendly. Being 'street smart' is.
I know the first names of 5 neighbors. That is enough.
And I live where there are over 140 units, (5-10 rooms each). That is a lot of people. And that is not... a city block.
Saying 'hello' or 'good morning' is the most you'll get. And only, 1/2 of the time is there a response. No one cares, no one can afford to.

That is a lot of people. We don't even have 1/4 of the amount of people you have.
The town I live in has only 55 thousand people that is class as a good size.
I guess that would be a very small town for you.

Is that why things are cheaper there?
Is it easier to get into the police force? Is it a profession that people want to get into?
