Five-member cell planned five bombs during Hannover football match

Information is continuing to leak out about the terror threat that led Germany to cancel a football match with the Netherlands just 90 minutes before kick-off on Tuesday, Justin Huggler writes.

A five-member cell led by a German citizen was planning a total of five bomb attacks in the city, Hannoverische Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported citing unnamed French security sources.

German authorities called off the match after reciving a tip-off from French intelligence just two hours before the match, the newspaper claimed. Three of the bombs were to be detonated at the stadium, and the other two at a bus stop and at a train station.

The bombs were to be smuggled into the stadium in a vehicle authorised to enter or by a cell member with a ticket.

Police have said no explosives were found in a search of the stadium and the city. But Bild newspaper has published allegations of a cover-up, claiming a paramedic witnessed an explosive device in an ambulance.

The unnamed paramedic says special forces were on the scene and he was "told not to talk about it", the newspaper claims.

The newspaper also claims three police officers have been disciplined for leaking information about alleged bomb finds.

Meanwhile German police now say a suspected dummy bomb found in Hannover station on the night was in fact an innocent package.

Bomb disposal teams were called to the station after passengers on an Intercity train raised the alarm. A man had left without his package, and when they tried to call him back he fled.

At the time, police said they believed the package full of electrical wires was an expertly made dummy bomb.

But it has now emerged that it was an innocent equipment being carried by an electrical engineer who has come forward to admit he was the passenger who left it behind,

He had not fled the train, but had been in a hurry because he was afraid he would miss his connection, he said.

No arrests have been made which are directly connected to this plot in Hannover.

But there has been an arrest linked to the Paris attacks, of an Algerian at a refugee shelter who boasted to other asylum-seekers there that there would be an attack in Paris several days in advance.

After the Paris attacks the other asylum-seekers at the shelter in Arnsberg, who are Syrian, reported him to police.

Police say they are still investigating to see if he had any advance knowledge or it was just a lucky guess.

A piece of paper has been found hidden in his room at the shelter with the words Ali Baba 13/11 Paris" written on it -- the date of the attacks. Police say they do not know if this was written before or after the attacks, however.

The arrested man has displayed an extreme hatred of France, they say.

Mali terror hotel is the choice for diplomats and politicians

Alfousséni Sidibe, an office worker in Bamako, said the Radisson was the choice of diplomats and politicians for meetings and normally heavily-guarded, writes Aislinn Laing.

"This is one of the biggest hotels in Mali and because of the mining conference, I believe there are many people inside," he told The Telegraph.

"The security police and gendarme are all rushing there. Life in Bamako is normally peaceful so this is a big shock for everyone."

'Small number' of UK soldiers in Mali

A Ministry of Defence spokesman has said that a small number of British soldiers are in Mali as part of an EU training mission, but they are not believed to be in Bamako.

10:18

Hotel taken hostage is at 90 per cent occupancy

The 190-room hotel was just finishing off the hosting of a major mining conference, Aislinn Laing writes.

Those due to speak included the Malian prime minister, government ministers, African Development Bank representatives as well as the directors of some major mining houses operating in Africa.

As a result of the conference, the hotel is believed to have been at 90 per cent occupancy.

Local radio is reporting that the attackers got into the heavily-guarded hotel compound in a diplomatic vehicle, allowing them to avoid the usual stringent security checks - this has not yet been verified.

10:14

Some analysis of the situation in Mali

Aislinn Laing in Johannesburg writes: Mali is still struggling to get back on its feet after a French-led intervention force in Jaunary 2013 drove al-Qaeda backed jihadists out of large swathes of the country's north they had taken over the previous year.

Boubacar Keita, the Malian president, was in France last month appealing for the international community to continue its support after the drawndown of forces in 2013.

In June this year, Keita signed a peace deal with Tuareg separatists in the north which granted them widespread autonomy, but central government is still struggling to control the north where porous borders and an unemployed youth have allowed an illicit trade in drugs and weapons to proliferate.

There are now questions about how long the French, who still have 1,300 troops in Mali, will allow the hotel siege to continue before intervening. Germany also has troops in Mali since it is participating in an EU military training mission in the south.

Third body, a woman, has been found at the site of the police raid in Saint-Denis

Paris prosecutors have announced that a third body, of a woman, was found at the site of Paris attacks police raid in Saint-Denis.

Authorities had previously been circumspect about a the presence of a third terrorist. They said her identity was unclear.

The raid killed suspected mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud, and his cousin Hasna Aitboulahcen, whose passport was also found at the flat.

09:54

President of Chad: this attack has nothing to do with religion

Idriss Déby Itno, the president of neighbouring Chad, has said: "Even now there is a new terrorist attack in Mali. Hostages have been taken at the Radisson hotel, which everyone knows. There are men and women, citizens who are only doing their work and who have become targets.

"I condemn in the firmest way possible this barbarous act which has nothing to do with religion.

"I reaffirm our support without hesitation to our brother Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and to the entire Malian people.

"Nothing is known for certain. But we wait for blood and tears."

09:37

Where is Mali?

There are 1,000 French troops in Mali, as well as many UN troops.

The raid is on the Radisson Blu hotel, which lies just west of the city centre near government ministries and diplomatic offices in the former French colony.

Yesterday, the Irish prime minister said they would send troops to replace French soldiers in Mali, to relieve them so they could fight Isil.

The Chinese state news agency Xinhua said several Chinese tourists were among those trapped inside the building.

Following a military coup in 2012, Islamic extremists took control of northern Mali, prompting a French-led military intervention in early 2013. The extremists were scattered from northern towns and cities, though the north remains insecure and militant attacks have extended farther south this year.

In March masked gunmen shot up a Bamako restaurant popular with foreigners, killing five people.

09:33

Gunmen entered Mali hostage hotel screaming "Allahu Akbar"

Gunmen entered the popular Radisson Blu hotel in the Malian capital with guns and grenades, shooting and screaming "Allahu Akbar".

A senior security source has said that 10 gunmen are now believed to be in the hotel, taking hostages, while another source at Radisson Blu hotel said that there were two hostage-takers.

A staffer at the Radisson Blu hotel who gave his name as Tamba Diarra said over the phone that the attackers used grenades in the assault. He did not have information on casualties or the number of assailants involved, but said he was not aware of hostages having been taken at the hotel.

Sweden arrests Iraqi in asylum seeker center over terrorism

Swedish authorities are interrogating a suspect arrested for plotting a "terror attack", authorities said as security is tightened following last week's carnage in Paris.

Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist told the Swedish daily Expressen that authorities were hunting for more suspects.

An Iraqi man was arrested by police during a Thursday afternoon raid on a centre for asylum seekers in the northeastern city of Boliden without incident, police said.

"We are now in a very intense stage of the investigation and we are still very interested in his activities and people he met with since arriving in Sweden," said Mark Vadasz, a spokesperson for Sapo, the Swedish security service.

09:10

Mali terror attack: two people holding 170 guests and staff hostage

Two terrorists are holding 170 people hostage in a Radisson Blu hotel in the Malian capital of Bamako, AFP reports. There are thought to be 140 guests and 30 employees in the hotel.

Local newspaper Jeune Afrique reports that three heavily-armed men entered hotel at 7am. The number of assailants and their reasons behind it remain unclear.

The U.S. Embassy in Mali asked citizens to shelter in place, suggesting there may be Americans present in the hotel.

Northern Mali was occupied by Islamist fighters, some with links to al Qaeda, for most of 2012. Although they were driven out by a French-led military operation, sporadic violence continues.

About 1,000 French troops remain in the country.

An Islamist group claimed responsibility for the death of five people last March in an attack on a restaurant in Bamako popular with foreigners.

Chief of French national police: We don't know where terrorist on the loose is

France's national police chief says that the whereabouts of a key fugitive in last week's Paris attacks is unclear.

Jean-Marc Falcone, speaking Friday on France-Info radio, said he is unable to say if Salah Abdeslam could be back on French territory.

"We can't say anything about the exact geographic situation of that individual," he said.

Theresa May arrives at interior ministers' meeting

Theresa May, the Home Secretary, has arrived at the Justice and Home Affairs council in Brussels, writes Matthew Holehouse.

They will discuss French proposals for universal checks on everyone entering and leaving the EU, a tighter firearms system and the use of PNR - passenger name records - to build up a picture of how people travel.

Arriving in Brussels she said the EU had taken "too long" to take action.

"This morning our thoughts are with the people of France, and the terrible tragedy that took place and barbaric attacks last week.

"The UK stands in solidarity with France and our hearts go out to all those affected by these terrible attacks.

"I think what we have seen, and I have said before, is that there is a clear link between the security of the EU’s external borders and security within the EU and that is why it is important that we ensure that the measures that we have already agreed are implemented, like the hotspots, but I am going to be pressing on two further things today.

"I think we need accelerated progress on firearms. I would like to see all Member States committing to improving the measures and penalties for dealing with those who traffic in firearms and on Passenger Name Records we need to see immediate progress.

"That negotiation has taken too long and must be concluded. But the UK will be going ahead with obtaining records from those who were operating too and from the United Kingdom."

08:40

Terror attack underway in Mali's capital

Jihadists launched a shooting rampage in the Radisson Blu hotel in the centre of the Malian capital Bamako on Friday, security sources and an AFP journalist said.

Automatic weapons fire could be heard from outside the 190-room hotel, where security forces have set up a security cordon.

One tweet suggested that jihadists were all over the hotel, "walking calmly", and had entered in a diplomatic car.

"It's all happening on the seventh floor, jihadists are firing in the corridor," a security source told AFP.

There are many French and Dutch troops stationed in Mali.

Yesterday, Ireland suggested that it could send its troops into Mali to help relieve the French troops currently stationed there to help fight terror at home.

08:39

French interior minister: EU needs to toughen up

French Interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve is exhorting his European Union partners to toughen the bloc's borders and move forward on a long-delayed system for collecting airline passenger information.

Cazeneuve warned them that "we can't take more time. This is urgent."

His call came at the start of an emergency meeting of EU interior and justice ministers aimed at fine-tuning a European security response to the attacks in Paris a week ago, in which 129 people were killed.

"Terrorists are crossing the borders of the European Union," he said, underlining why the EU must adopt a so-called passenger name record system, which has been held up for years.

He said the system would allow the EU to better track extremists and foreign fighters coming and going from Syria and Iraq.

French police: Attacks ringleader seen on Paris Metro on night of carnage

The suspected ringleader of the Paris attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, was caught on camera at a Metro train station in the capital on the night of the carnage, a police source said Friday.

Abaaoud has been found on CCTV at Croix de Chevaux metro in Paris at 2200 on the night of the attacks. He passed through the barriers without a ticket. It is 250 metres from where the black Seat was found.

It raises the prospect he took part in the attacks, or directed them.

Migrant camp near Dunkirk cleared over jihadist fears

French police yesterday cleared a camp near Dunkirk which was home to 250 people over fears it was controlled by Islamic extremists.

The camp at Teteghem was being used to smuggle migrants on to ferries by UK-registered cars.

The mayor of Teteghem said that he had decided to close the camp before the Paris attacks, and said this week he was concerned that it was being used for people smuggling across the Channel, and that he had become concerned with the proselytising in the camp.

The migrants there are mainly from Syria, Iraq and Iran.

Umunna: MPs must be given a free vote on air strikes

Chuka Umunna, the Labour MP, has said it's "absolutely fundamental" that Labour MPs are given a free vote on Syrian air strikes.

He told the BBC's Today programme this morning: "There are people who are pacifists in my party. I don't share those views and neither do the majority of people in the country.

"If you cannot keep the people safe, in their eyes that is a disqualification from office."

Imminent terror threat in Kuala Lumpur ahead of Obama visit

Andrew Marszal in New Delhi writes:

Ten Isil-affiliated suicide bombers may be operating in Kuala Lumpur, where a major summit attended by Barack Obama and Xi Jinping is to take place this weekend, according to a leaked internal police memo.

More than 2,000 army personnel have been deployed to secure the city’s streets against the possible threat.

"There have been reports of imminent terrorist threats in Malaysia," Malaysia's police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement on Thursday night. "At this point, I would like to underline that they have yet to be confirmed.”

Mr Khalid confirmed the leaked memo was genuine. It described a meeting between Isil and its local affiliate Abu Sayyaf that allegedly took place last Sunday. It said eight suicide bombers had been sent to Sabah, eastern Malaysia, and 10 to Kuala Lumpur.

“These suicide bombers underwent military training in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq and are prepared to receive orders from their leaders to launch attacks/bombings,” it warned.

Mr Obama and Mr Xi are among 18 leaders either belonging to or closely associated with the Asean group of countries attending the summit this weekend.

Abu Sayyaf is a radical offshoot of an insurgency in the Muslim-dominated southern Philippines. The group emerged in the 1990s and pledged allegiance to Isil last year.

Earlier this week the group beheaded a Malaysian captive in the Philippines while Mr Obama and world leaders were in the north of the country for a different summit.

Malaysia has detained around 150 suspects since 2013, some who were allegedly plotting attacks in the country.

Morning summary

• After the death yesterday of suspected mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud, attention turns to Salah Abdeslam, one of the attackers who is still believed to be at large.

• Belgian media reported that Abdeslam "on foot wandering the capital". As a result, the terror alert level was raised to four, the highest level.

• Salah Abdeslam could now also be on the run from Isil, as well as European police. A Belgian newspaper reported that he told a friend in Brussels that the attack had gone too far and regretted his part in the atrocity.

• A friend of Salah Abdeslam described him as "a bit of a hell-raiser. There were girls all the time, almost a different one every night. There were girls everywhere, Belgians, French, Moroccan, Tunisians. On one occasion there was even an English girl."

• There are key security concerns after the revelation that Abaaoud entered Europe as a 'refugee'. The French interior minister was unaware Abaaoud had entered the country despite his being one of the world's most wanted terrorists. EU interior ministers will today move to tighten the continent's borders to ensure that every single migrant is checked against a terrorism watchlist

• Ministers are also expected to bow to French demands to screen every single EU passport holder entering the continent for the first time to catch fighters returning from the Middle East.

• The United Nations is today poised to approve a French proposal which authorises “combat by all means” against the Islamic State.

• Germany could deploy armed soldiers on its streets for the first time since the Second World War, as Europe went into lockdown in the wake of the Paris attacks.

• Hasna Aitboulahcen, believed to have become Europe's first female suicide bomber when she detonated an explosive vest during the raid yesterday which also killed Abdelhamid Abaaoud, had once been an 'extrovert' who drank alcohol and was nicknamed 'the cowgirl' for her habit of wearing cowboy hats, according to acquaintances.

Leader of Swat team describes "hell on earth" at Bataclan theatre

The leader of the Swat team which stormed the Bataclan theatre described the scene as “hell on earth”.

Giving his name as “Jeremy”, the leader of the specialist BRI unit, he described the scene to NBC News.

05:18

Sweden arrests terrorist suspect

Swedish police on Thursday arrested a man suspected of plotting a "terrorist attack" after a two-day manhunt, as the country steps up security after last week's carnage in Paris.

Iraqi Mutar Muthanna Majid was apprehended during an afternoon raid on a centre for asylum seekers in the northeastern city of Boliden without incident, according to security services.

Sweden has been on high alert since 129 people died in a wave of attacks in Paris on Friday that were claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven congratulated the security services for the "speed with which the suspect was located and arrested".

Authorities had issued an arrest warrant for 25-year-old Majid, who local media said was suspected to have fought in Syria, for preparing a "terrorist" attack.

"The arrest took place in a calm manner" and investigators are planning to interrogate the suspect, Sweden's intelligence agency, Sapo, said in a statement.

While no link with the Paris killers was determined, Sapo has said the bloodshed in the French capital demonstrated how the Islamic State group has expanded its reach in Europe.

Sweden kept its national terror threat status on "high" after the arrest, the second-highest level on a five-point scale, after raising it Wednesday following a review by the National Centre for Terrorist Threat Assessment.

On Thursday, Lofven said Sweden had been naive about about the risk of an attack on its soil and plans to beef up security measures, including surveillance of encrypted communications.

Sweden has not seen an Islamist attack since 2010, when a man blew himself up on a shopping street in Stockholm, injuring two people.

US offers $5 million reward for Isil "gatekeeper"

Washington has placed a $5 million bounty on the head of Tarad Mohammad al-Jarba, who is thought to have arranged for up to six of the Paris attackers to visit Syria for training.

The Telegraph’s Gordon Rayner reports:

Tarad Mohammad al-Jarba, who uses the name Abu Muhammad al-Shimali, is the man in charge of getting Isil fighters across Syria's border with Turkey, and plays a key role in all Isil operations outside Iraq and Syria.

French investigators believe six of the seven Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant jihadis who were killed in the November 13 attacks had been to training camps in Syria, and that three of them had used refugee routes across Europe to get back to France.

Al-Jarba, 35, is described as a key member of Isil's immigration and logistics committee. He arranges for Isil recruits to cross into Syria via the Turkish border town of Gaziantep, and to get back into Europe once they are ready to carry out terrorist attacks.

Kerry confident Isil will be defeated

John Kerry, the US Secretary of State is confident that Isil will be neutralised much faster than al-Qaeda

We are going to defeat Daesh. We always said it will take time," Kerry said, using an alternative name for the Islamist militant group.

"We began our fight against al Qaeda in 2001 and it took us quite a few years before we were able to eliminate Osama bin Laden and the top leadership and neutralise them as an effective force. We hope to do Daesh much faster than that and we think we have an ability to do that,"

FBI sceptical over Isil threats to US

James Comey, the FBI director, has voiced scepticism over the latest videos allegedly released by Isil in which the terrorist group has threatened attacks on the White House and Rome.

He has said that while the videos are being investigated, they do not represent “credible intelligence”.

Mr Comey added there was no connection between those responsible for the Paris attacks and the US.

Canada considering camps for Syrian refugees

The Canadian government is considering building special camps for Syrian refugees.

A spokesman for the government in Ottawa confirmed that a tender notice has been issued for the construction of temporary “winterised lodgings” for groups of 500 to 3,000 people.

But the willingness to accept the refugees has drawn a mixed reaction on social media with some praising what they regard as a humanitarian response and others condemning the policy

like I said before.. I am the last guy who would want to see Allied & American service people killed in action..as 4 members of my family would have to answer the call.. and fight but this can not go on and Arial raids are not going to end it.

Either we stop it now or we are headed for WW3

I agree with you about how it needs to be stopped now....I just dont think American, well, the worlds citizens, have the stomach for what it would take to stop it now.
That leaves, as some have suggested, Arab countries to handle terror groups with our support. The problem there though....to be frank.....is, at the end of the day, those Arab countries are Muslim as well...and ultimately, thats where their loyaltes will lie.
So Im afraid we're probably stuck with the status quo for awhile.

Say it again, slowly so Ben Carson's synaptic buzz and Donald Trupm's stupidity don't drown it out.

"I'm wondering about the logic it self. but shall we recall some memmories back to the school? then what happen?"

I always say " Don't look for logic where there is none, evil is evil "

Please tell me what school in what country.? Do you mean in Africa ?
The Book Haram girls?
( I am trying to Google it now.). Because ISIS has attacked schools & kidnapped girls since the 1970's in Russia. Even from a movie theater, that long ago. (I remember it).
