Police charge 17-year old in Canada after 4 shot dead

TORONTO (AP) — Police on Saturday charged a 17-year-old boy with four counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder in a mass shooting at a school and home in a remote aboriginal community in western Canada, officials said.

January 23, 2016

Police said the male suspect can't be named under Canada's Youth Criminal Justice Act. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Supt. Grant St. Germaine said nine people were shot in the school, including a female teacher's aide who died at the scene and a male teacher who died in a hospital. He said seven people wounded in Friday's shooting at the school are hospitalized.

Police said two brothers, 17-year-old Dayne Fountaine and 13-year-old Drayden, were shot dead in a home before the gunman headed to the grade 7-12 La Loche Community School. Police responded to a call of shots fired at the school shortly after the lunch hour.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commanding Officer Brenda Butterworth-Carr said when officers arrived at the school they saw the front door had been shot open. They entered the school, spotted the suspect and gave chase before apprehending him. He is due in court next week.

Police said they were not aware of a motive and declined to say what type of gun was used. The school is in the remote Dene aboriginal community of La Loche in Saskatchewan Province. La Loche is a community of less than 3,000 where just about everybody knows everybody else.
"This is a significant event for Canada," St. Germaine said. "It's a huge impact on the community of La Loche. It's a part of changing times. We are seeing more violence." Residents lit candles and placed flowers at a makeshift memorial outside the school.

Shootings at schools or on university campuses are rare in Canada. However, the country's bloodiest mass shooting occurred on Dec. 6, 1989, at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique, when Marc Lepine entered a college classroom at the engineering school, separated the men from the women, told the men to leave and opened fire, killing 14 women before killing himself.

Just pointing out that if it can happen in a country that has extremely strict gun laws, gun control is pointless.

It's rare in Canada. The last time something like that happened to them was 10 years ago.

I was wrong about the year. It was 1989. Yes, it was a school shooting. The media is calling this one a school shooting but it was a residential shooting too.

Harmony, I beg to differ. Law abiding citizens hold the responsibility of keeping their arms safe. These child shootings are proof, that when criminals want to commit crime, the will get a gun, even in Canada.

Please don't put words in my mouth, I'm quite capable of speaking for myself thank you. I belive in all the laws that govern our second amendment rights. Gun control aims to remove all guns, like in Canada. You feel better that only criminals can get guns? I realize there is no changing your mind or mine. Then again I'm a Texan spock

my brothers and my mother have guns , several of my coworkers have guns, we are far from a society where 'only criminals' get guns,,

control:

determine the behavior or supervise the running of.

that can range from common sense regulation of what weapons are manufactured and what will determine responsible ownership

to taking of guns

currently, gun control is only about regulation,,as in well 'regulated' milita

regulations are an important part of safety, kind of like regulating how cars are made so people don't die of carbon monoxide poisoning,

its as much reactionary to believe that not having any gun laws would be better as it is to believe that not having any guns would be

If anyone thinks regulating a militia means limiting what arms said militia can have is living in lala land and they dont know what the hell theyre talking about.

Limiting what type of firearms law abiding citizens can own is stupid and serves no purpose other than to be used as an inroad to further banning of other types of firearms.
We already have gun control. I can control whether or not I can own one....just as someone else can do the same. They need to stay the frick out of my decision and Ill stay out of theirs.

Well I don't know if you've heard the term nanny state. That's were you let big government make all the desisions for you like a big mommy. Sure they can tell you what cars are safe, but there not perfect. Case in point. We have the EPA that car manufactures answer to. I'm sure you've heard of all these car recalls from VW for cheating on environmental emissions. They originally got the ok from big government. How about the airbag recalls nationwide from Tanana corp, they got the ok from usgov. So please don't make the Gov sound like they know best. You have your reasons why you don't like guns, and you have the right to. Calling everything Illogical cause you don't like it is the definition of illogical.

I suppose there will be a mingler who is an authority on exactly what the founders meant by 'well regulated'
