Last time I was there, forty some years ago, there were "inexpensive guide/companions" readily available in almost every bar you walked into.

When I was there we hired our taxi driver as our guide. Boonya was willing to go anywhere in his little van for $40 a day. We went all over the country, including the forbidden camps of the Burmese Refugees. I had a great time.
