Dr. Phil: Bernie Sanders' 'Everything's Free' Policies Create Vicious Cycle

Dr. Phil McGraw said on "Fox and Friends" this morning that Bernie Sanders is popular with younger voters because of his "everything's free" message.

Dr. Phil said that Sanders' young supporters don't understand that if they're getting something for free - whether it's health care or a college education - somebody has to pay for it.

He explained that according to Sanders' plan, for example, a person will get a free education, then get a job and pay extremely high taxes, which pay for the next person's free education.

"It's a vicious cycle," Dr. Phil stated. "Old sayings get to be old sayings because they're profound: 'There's no free lunch.'"

"They're just talking about the government getting bigger," he explained. "Free education? It'd be great if you could do it, but it's just not right."

Dr. Phil said that Sanders' "free stuff" plan actually cheats people, because it doesn't give them the opportunity to work for something, overcome obstacles and gain confidence.

Dr. Phil said that Sanders' young supporters don't understand that if they're getting something for free - whether it's health care or a college education - somebody has to pay for it.

I would disagree.

I think they understand perfectly well that someone has to pay for it.
That there's always a cost.

IMO I think the "problem" or disconnect is the idea that people can earn their way to wealth in a system reliant upon debt and consumerism.

You can't.
It's just not possible.

You need to develop the discipline, the understanding, the habits, of avoiding debt.

We have social security which is tax the workers now to pay for yesterdays workers.

We have take student loans now, so when you make more you can pay them off later.

We have Obamacare, which is pay for healthcare now, and please please don't use it unless you're really sick, and please use less than what you paid for.

We have get a loan for your house now, and it will increase in price above the interest rate for the mortgage, so you'll have equity later.

That doesn't work to do anything except perpetuate debt and reliance upon it.

But people keep swallowing it and believing they'll always go up the ladder, they'll improve their job, they'll always get raises above the cost of living increases caused by inflation, they'll reach the position where they can pay their "fair share" and it won't matter to them because they make "enough."

That's the problem.

The mindset of "get those that have the money to pay for it now, so when we get up there and have the money we can pay for it, no problem, we won't mind paying then!"

Never realizing that the time between saying "no problem" to where you earn enough to pay, you've developed all sorts of nasty habits that perpetuated that first erroneous mindset.

No different than an individual that goes into consumer debt, then works hard to get a raise to help pay it off, meanwhile he's still got those nasty consumer keeping up with the joneses habits and keeps increasing debt, requiring him to try to increase a plateaued income with delivering pizzas and cleaning the neighbors house on the weekends.

That's the current mindset.

And government subsidizes it and offers absolutely nothing in terms of training or helping people to get out of it, and even penalizes people for trying to avoid it.

So, IMO it's not a case of wanting free crap and thinking they can get it, it's the mindset that people are in a race between income and outgo and they can just outrun outgo, or current consumption of debt will significantly increase future income and reduce future consumption.

I think people know there is a cost.
I think people simply believe they can always outearn it and incomes will always go up.

I sincerely doubt it they do realize it. They praise Dems or Obama for it as if it is a personal gift. And don't realize the majority of what they receive is from low to upper middle class people, paying taxes.

Or.. They just don't care & think in terms of 'well they can afford it', or 'it is about time ' or ' it is the redistribution of wealth & equally & justice'

Either way.. It is ' entitlement thinking', even if it is a 'greed', rationale.

I havent heard anyone with sense thank obama for anything 'free', nor heard of anyone actually receiving anything 'free'

yeah, there are the idiots that make the news spouting nonsense on all sides,, but generally people do not believe that obama 'gave' them something 'free'

Given the number of people who oppose expanding how much education is paid through taxes, who have no clue how much of the REST of their lives isn't actually "free" either, I'm not surprised that SOME people misunderstand Sanders' ideas.

But demanding instead, that the status quo now should be maintained, isn't exactly brilliant either.

I am so relieved. Because that then means they will have no problem getting a lot less free with Trump.

If Dr. Phil really did say what is portrayed here, then he's either an idiot, or he's opposed to all public education ever.

There's no difference between the existing public education and what Sanders has proposed, save the level of education.

Putting Bernie Sanders on the same level as Dr Phil ?
That may be blasphemy.laugh
