Lindsey Gordon, 24, was laying out, sunbathing on the beach this week when an out of control cop in his police cruiser came barrelling down the sand and ran her over.

Gordon, who merely wanted to catch some sun with her friend, is now hospitalized in critical but stable condition with a shattered pelvis and internal bleeding.

According to FOX 8, Gordon and her friend were sunbathing around 3:15 Thursday afternoon as Grand Isle Police Officer Norris Esponge was patrolling the beach in a marked police unit, an F-250 truck. Gordon's friend was able to move out of the way, but Louisiana State Police say Officer Esponge rolled over Gordon.

Gordon's friend, who did not want to be identified, detailed the horrific event, "When she realized something was going on is when she heard Lindsey screaming and she rolled out of the way and saw the truck," she said. "Lindsey was being rolled under the truck, and flipping under the truck, and she screamed to get him to stop."

Esponge, who is the assistant chief of police in Grand Isle, is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. State police, who are investigating the case, say they are conducting toxicology tests.

"The toxicology is something the police department was requiring for their driver and they're handling that," said Sgt. Nick Manale with Louisiana State Police.

"As part of this investigation, which is still being completed, if we feel the driver was in any form unsafe to be operating the motor vehicle... which is part of any crash investigation... we will take that into account..." Manale said.

State police released a statement saying they would have the results of their investigation complete by next week.

Police officers running over innocent people is sadly not uncommon.

In Franklin Township, New Jersey, a 10-year-old boy was struck and killed by a speeding police vehicle as he walked to his friend's house for a sleepover. The officer was reportedly responding to a call and did not have his lights on when he hit the boy in front of the child's two young friends.

In Miami, Florida last year, parents were horrified after watching a police cruiser run over a 6-year-old boy who was playing in his neighborhood.

According to a San Francisco Police Department news release last November, officer Christopher Kohrs rammed his Dodge Charger into two men who were crossing near Broadway and Montgomery streets in the city's North Beach neighborhood.

Instead of stopping and rendering aid to the two people he just ran over, police say that Kohrs ditched the car and ran from the scene around 2:20 a.m. Having the unmistakable face of 'Hot Cop' made Kohrs readily identifiable and he was arrested later that day on two counts of felony hit-and-run.
