Black-eyed children (or black-eyed kids) are an urban legend of supposed paranormal creatures that resemble children between the ages of 6 and 16, with pale skin and black eyes, who are reportedly seen hitchhiking or panhandling, or are encountered on doorsteps of residential homes. Tales of black-eyed children have appeared in pop culture since the late 1990s.[1][2][3][4][5]
HistoryEdit

The supposed origins of the legend are 1998 postings written by Texas reporter Brian Bethel on a "ghost-related mailing list" relating alleged encounters with "black eyed kids" in Abilene, Texas and Portland, Oregon. Called classic examples of creepypasta, Bethel's stories gained such popularity that he published a FAQ "just to keep up with demand for more info about the new urban legend."[1][5] In 2012, Brian Bethel told his story on the reality television series Monsters and Mysteries in America. He wrote a follow up article for the Abilene Reporter News, describing his experience.[6]

In 2012, the horror film Black Eyed Kids was produced with Kickstarter funding, its director commenting that the black eyed children were "an urban legend that's been floating around on the Internet for years now, I always thought it was fascinating".[7] A 2013 episode of MSN's Weekly Strange that featured reports of black eyed children is thought to have helped spread the legend on the internet.[1]

During one week in September 2014, the British tabloid Daily Star ran three sensationalistic front-page stories about alleged sightings of black-eyed children, connected to the sale of a supposedly haunted pub in Staffordshire. The paper claimed a "shock rise in sightings around the world".[8] Alleged sightings are taken seriously by ghost hunters, some of whom believe black eyed children to be extraterrestrials, vampires, or ghosts.[9]

According to science writer Sharon A. Hill, the legend of "black eyed kids resembles typical spooky folklore stories in the same realm as phantom black dogs, apparitions, and mysterious monsters. They aren't supernatural, there may never even have been an actual encounter. That does not stop people from continuing to see and fear them and pass on the latest tale of terror."[2]

I just watched a kind of creepy video on this. * Which I will not post *
But I have never heard, this phenomena referred to as...
"The BEK's".
So I am curious if anyone else has heard of this (I know it is in different cultures & religions. Or people refer to them as some type of extraterrestrials or demonic)
If so.. What do you call it/ them?
What do you think it is?
Or is it just an Urban- legend?

We have a ghost kid that haunts a local Jr. high (middle school) school. Evidently, the kid had fallen and struck his head and died there several decades ago.
I remember, several years ago, telling my young niece about it and how, some nights, you can see the kid walking the halls from the lighted foyer.
She was skeptical...as skeptical as a ten year old could be anyway.... so I decided to show her. We drove over about 10 one night and pulled over on the shoulder of the road in front of the school....right on front of the lighted foyer abt 60 yards away....and THERE!....seated at the bench in that waiting area was the ghost kid! my nieces jaw dropped!
I told her we needed a closer look and sped toward the schools driveway entrance on down the road.....my niece screaming "No, no Uncle Richard! Please let's just go home!"
I just HAD to get closer though...I wanted to see!
The driveway took us to the side of the school and we turned, driving down next to the school...the foyer rapidly approaching. My niece was beside herself now...shaking, tears in her eyes...visibly terrified....but on I drove....closer, closer...to the foyer and the ghost child...."Please, PLEASE Uncle Richard! Please take me home!" my niece cried.
And...we were there...in front of the foyer....and we saw it! The.....ghost kid...

Nah, its a carved lion's head ....the schools mascot is a lion...mounted on a pedestal. Looks just like a kid at night from a distance.
That stupid prank works everytime laugh

Nothing official. I love a podcast that deals specifically with the Pacific Northwest and black eyes peas.

TANIS it's on the Howl and Tunedin app. Minow beats Whale production. Great podcast deals with native mythology, Charles Manson, black eye children. Is it a dark spirit that affects people that live in seattle? Why so many suicides? Kurt Kobane, Eliot Smith, did their depressing music and the spirit of the Pacific Northwest make them commit suicide? If you'd like to see a script of the show, here's ep 111.
Look up The legend of Eld Fen. Mysterious? No?

Probably. I had to use Google images. The pic from wicpicia (that said: 'artists interpretation') wouldn't post & neither would the cover of the book on link. And neither would one from a 2013 article... (That is the creepy..part to me)
After 5 tries, I gave up on them.
But needed something, for people that never heard of The, BEK's term. (I didn't until today).

The first well documented and discussed account came from a journalist named Brian Bethel in 1998. In his story, two children (not quite teens, but close) approached him as he sat in his car while parked in a parking lot. At first glance, the kids looked normal, wearing clothes that were in style and had a pale, olive colored skin. In acknowledging the two boys, Bethel was overcome with a peculiar fear that he describes in his account as: "I could feel fight-or-flight responses kicking in. Something, I knew instinctually, was not right, but I didn't know what it could possibly be."

Claiming that they were on their way to see a movie but had left their money at home, the two boys asked Bethel for a ride back to their house. When Bethel did not allow them into his car, the kids seemed to get annoyed and kept asking for a ride. As Bethel's fear and panic increased, he actually found himself wanting to open the door. However, when Bethel noticed their eyes, a primal fear took over and momentarily paralyzed him; the kids had coal black eyes, completely lacking pupils and irises.

As if sensing that their chance for admittance into the car was coming to and end, the kids got more urgent and demanding. Bethel was finally able to push his fear momentarily aside and drive away. And while his story sounds like something out of a horror novel, there are other accounts to back it up.

this happened in Texas, Waco i think...

Moe,
According to Snopes it started from a $12,000 Vancouver Canada horror film. OR the story you listed from a guy in Texas

But the horror film says it started from a legend.

In 2013, the number of reports and stories of BEKs spiked like Walmart sales on Black Friday: through the roof.

ORIGINS

So what are black-eyed kids? Is there a rational explanation for them? If not, then what could be the source of these creepy little ghouls?

The origin of the tale of the black-eyed kids is very hard to pin down to an exact origin point or a single source. The stories about them began slowly at first back in the mid- to late-1990s across internet message boards, which were at the time the Facebook or MySpace of the day. For years, the message boards were lit up with stories of encounters, and as the internet grew in scope, becoming more and more integrated into our lives, it also began to shape our experiences and the frames of reference in which we put things into.

While difficult to pin down the exact origin of the black-eyed kids stories, one source might have been the story of Brian Bethel, an Internet blogger/journalist who claims his was the first black-eyed kid encounter. It happened in 1996 in Abilene, Texas. Bethel’s encounter took place in the spring or summer of that year he reports:

the movie was released in 2011, it happened to bethel in 1998... from what i've read, bethel's account was the first widespread story, because he is a journalist..
