TV documentary sheds light on men who enjoy dressing up as dogs

Around 10,000 people in the UK enjoy the pet play craze

Channel 4 met and filmed some of the 'human pups' for its documentary
One of them, Tom, won the coveted Mr Puppy UK title as 'Spot'

'Puppy play is definitely not about sex, it is a form of escapism,' says Kye, a 28-year-old Oxford graduate who enjoys dressing up as a dog.

Around 10,000 people follow the pet play craze in the UK, according to a TV documentary which explores the phenomenon.

Channel 4's Secret Life of the Human Pups focuses mainly on men like Kye but he says: 'Females who are into pet play are usually into kitten play as they identify more with kittens than pups.'

The programme also features the sad story of Tom, 32, a theatre technician from Tring, Hertforshire, who split up with his fiancee Rachel because of his yearning to dress up as a Dalmatian.

He says: 'You disappear and start chasing puppy toys. You go so deep into the head space, you crave it and want it. It's just magic.'

Tom has spent more than £4,000 over the past 10 years on his canine habit and he shows off his rubber costume, complete with breathing tube, but admits: 'It is quite awkward to put on, you need a lot of talc.'

So intense is Tom's craving that he has taken to sleeping in a dog training crate, lined with puppy training pads in case he has to answer the call of nature.

Tom - or Spot, as he likes to be known - was crowned Mr Puppy UK in November - pipping Minty and Oakleigh - and is filmed travelling to the finals of Mr Puppy Euro in Belgium.

On his Twitter account Spot says he is owned for by Colin, whose own Twitter profile describes him as being into 'Lycra, Gunge, Pup Play, BDSM.'

Tom tells the programme: 'Rachel thought I was becoming gay.'

He later admits: 'A tiny bit of me regrets being a puppy because I lost what I had.'

While those in the programme insist their desire to dress up as dogs is not sexual, it bears a resemblance to the furry fetish.

Furries are people who dress up in animal costumes and take on the persona of that animal.

Occasionally they engage in full-on sex in costume but more common is the bizarre practice of 'yiffing', a form of dry-humping.

Earlier this month nearly 3,000 people attended the annual Biggest Little Fur Con convention in Reno, Nevada, including around 700 people in fursuits.

The Secret Life of the Human Pups will be shown on Channel 4 at 10pm on Wednesday 25 May.

Plushophilia (from "plushie" and "-philia") is a paraphilia involving stuffed animals. Plushophiles are sometimes called plushies, although this term (plushies) can also refer to non-sexual stuffed animal enthusiasts, and to stuffed animals in general.[1][2]

The furry fandom is a subculture interested in fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics.[1] Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothes. Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of people who gather on the Internet and at furry conventions.[2]

The furry fandom is male-dominated, with surveys reporting around 80% male respondents.[9][10][11]


Homosexuality and bisexuality are OVER REPRESENTED in the furry fandom,[12] by about a factor of 10 compared to the United States average self-identified rates of 1.8% bisexuality and 1.7% homosexuality.[36] According to four different surveys, 14–25% of the fandom members report homosexuality, 37–52% bisexuality, 28–51% heterosexuality, and 3–8% other forms of alternative sexual relationships.[9][11][37][38] Approximately half of the respondents reported being in a relationship, of which 76% were in a relationship with another member of furry fandom.[9] Examples of sexual aspects within furry fandom include erotic art and furry-themed cybersex.[39][40] The term "yiff" is sometimes used to indicate sexual activity or sexual material within the fandom—this applies to sexual activity and interaction within the subculture whether in the form of cybersex or offline.[41][42]

Sexual attraction to furry characters is a polarized issue within the fandom; in one survey with 4300 furry respondents, 37% answered that sexual attraction is important in their furry activities, 38% were ambivalent, and 24% answered that it has little or nothing to do with their furry activities.[38] In a different online survey, 33% of furry respondents answered that they have a "significant sexual interest in furry", another 46% stated they have a "minor sexual interest in furry", and the remaining 21% stated they have a "non-sexual interest in furry". The survey specifically avoided adult-oriented websites to prevent bias.[11] Another survey found that 96.3% of male furry respondents reported viewing furry pornography, compared to 78.3% of female; males estimated 50.9% of all furry art they view is pornographic, compared to 30.7% female. Furries have a slight preference for pornographic furry artwork over non-pornographic artwork. 17.1% of males reported that when they viewed pornography it is exclusively or near-exclusively furry pornography, and only about 5% reported that pornography was the top factor which got them into the fandom.[43]

A portion of the fandom is sexually interested in zoophilia, although a majority take a negative stance towards the former. In a survey conducted in 1997-1998, about 2% of furry respondents stated an interest in zoophilia, and less than 1% an interest in plushophilia; the survey was replicated in 2008, and it found 17% of respondents reported zoophilia.
