Qatar detains Dutch woman on adultery charges after filing rape complaint

A Dutch woman who reported being raped during her holiday in Qatar has been held by the country’s authorities on suspicion of adultery since March. Dozens of people on social media have condemned the arrest and called for the woman’s release.

“She was arrested in March on suspicion of adultery, which means having sex outside marriage,” lawyer Brian Lokollo told AFP on Saturday.

The 22-year-old woman, identified as just ‘Laura’ by Dutch media, said that she was drugged prior to being raped and reported having “realized to her great horror” that she had been taken advantage of after she woke up in an unfamiliar flat.

The woman went dancing at a hotel in Doha and when she returned to her table she realized she had been drugged as “after the first sip of her drink... she felt very unwell,” Lokollo told Dutch broadcaster NOS-Radio1.

According to Lokollo, the woman was able to flee the flat and then went to a police station to file a complaint. However, the police refused to let her go.

Dutch foreign ministry spokeswoman Daphne Kerremans confirmed that the woman remains in custody but said she has not yet been charged. “The inquiry is ongoing,” she said.

“We have provided assistance to her since the first day of detention. For the sake of the defendant's case we will not make further comments at this point,” the Dutch embassy said in a statement to Doha News.

“It is totally inhuman,” the woman's mother, Marian, told Dutch television NOS saying it was the first time her daughter had been on holiday without her.

The suspected assailant is also in custody. He, however, denied all charges saying the sex was consensual and claimed that the woman had even asked him for money.

“She completely denies these accusations,” Lokollo said.

“She and her mother have also been pressured to have her marry her attacker,” he added.

If it's true what is said about the Dutch woman (22) is in jail in Qatar, then she should be freed, because she is innocent. #freeLaura

Meanwhile, dozens of people took to Twitter and called for Laura’s release under the hashtag #FreeLaura.

The woman's hearing is scheduled for Monday.

This is barbaric sexism.
And that is ALL it is.

This was a terrible event. Do any of you Europeans plan on going to Somolia???? Nooooo? Why not? For the same reason you shouldn't go to Qatar, an Arab country that supports primitive Muslim terrorists.

I'm sorry, but you step into the mudpit, your gonna get dirty. When your dealing with primitive people who think you are an animal and it's ok to abuse you, what did you expect? Hope she gets out, but according to Shira or whatever the hell they call it. If one of those guys was married, and he raped her, if he has witnesses, then she's responsible for the adultery. She may do some time.

Qatar detains Dutch woman on adultery charges after filing rape complaint

Which could simply be the most expedient legal means of keeping her in the country.

Maybe they'd prefer to put away the guy that allegedly drugged and raped her and if she flew off then he'd get off scott free.
Or maybe the guy is connected and wants to be cleared of the charge.

This way they can coerce her to give testimony, or evidence, or recant, or something.

It's not like police and governments don't do crap like this all the time.

"That guy looks like an illegal immigrant drug runner. And they're going 31 in a 30. That's speeding. I'm going to pull them over and we'll figure out what else they're doing wrong."

"Hey look, there's a black guy with 5,000 in cash. That MUST be for drugs. We're going to take it and they have to prove it's from something legitimate and then we'll give it back, at some point, after lawyer fees, and several months."

Pass a bajillion, or simply unfair/unspecific/unclear, laws so at any point you can bust somebody for doing something illegal when you want to.
That's the government way.

The "adultery charges" may have simply been the charge with the greatest legal plausibility they could use to justify doing what they want, and may be meaningless otherwise.

Dutch woman raped on vacation receives ‘lenient’ suspended sentence from Qatari court for “adultery”

A Dutch woman who reported being drugged and raped while on vacation in Doha was sentenced to a one-year suspended jail term by a Qatari court for having “illicit sex.” She had been held in custody since March.

On Monday, a Qatari court sentenced a 22-year-old Dutch woman, known as Laura, to a one-year suspended sentence and fined her 3,000 riyals ($824) for having “extramarital sex.” The woman will be deported once she pays the fine, according to the court’s decision.

While on vacation in Qatar in March, Laura went out for drinks at an upmarket nightclub in Doha before being taken to an unknown place where she said she was sexually assaulted.

Laura’s lawyer, Brian Lokollo, said: “She went dancing, but when she returned to the table after the first sip of her drink, she realized that she had been drugged. She really didn’t feel very well.

“The young woman remembers nothing more until the following morning, when she woke up in a totally unfamiliar apartment and realized to her great horror that she had been raped.”

Laura managed to flee the apartment and reported the assault to Qatari police, only to be arrested and charged with adultery for having sex out of wedlock.

Her rapist, an identified Syrian national named Omar Abdullah al-Hasan, insisted that the sex was consensual and claimed that the woman had asked him for money.

Al-Hasan was sentenced to 100 lashes for having sex outside marriage and 40 additional lashes for consuming alcohol, which is also prohibited under Qatar’s strict laws. The defendant will not serve a prison term, but could also face deportation.

A Qatari official claimed that the Dutch woman’s one-year suspended sentence was “lenient.”

“Had she been a Muslim woman, she would have received at least five years in jail. No one can get out of such charges here in Qatar,” he said, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Laura’s mother told Dutch NOS television that she has not spoken to her daughter, but feels “so happy” to learn of her release. “I do not know yet when she gets home, but this is not most important,” she said, adding that “the most important is that she gets home... I am so happy.”

Laura’s case comes as Qatar, a tiny oil-rich country, is preparing for the FIFA World Cup in 2020. There are serious doubts about the country’s readiness to offer appropriate treatment to visitors from across the world, who may be unfamiliar with strict Muslim laws, however.

Rights groups also say that foreign nationals working at World Cup construction sites face sub-standard conditions and are subjected to slave labor. In March, Amnesty International accused Qatari authorities of forcing migrant workers to live in poor conditions, while withholding their salaries and passports.

spock Because the world is watching them now. And 'additional' jail time would mean a lot less tourism & money.

For the life of me I have no idea why any woman would choose to live or visit in those type countries

Youth sometimes thinks it is invulnerable.
People tend to believe, their own laws go with them, when they leave their country (or when they are at sea, even cruise ships noway)
And pure, IGNORANCE, where they believe what they hear.
