Trudeau’s Mexican visa reversal puts “optics” ahead of Canada’s security and balance sheet
Justin Trudeau proudly told Canadians that his government will remove the visa requirement for Mexican visitors coming to Canada. Mexican president Enrique Pena-Nieto is in town, and Trudeau wanted to impress his counterpart and make some headlines in the process. So, starting in 2017, anyone from Mexico will be able to hop on a plane and come to Canada whenever they want, without any prior checks or screening. So what’s the big deal? Watch as I enumerate the benefits those making claims can receive even if a Canadian judge ultimately finds the claim false. The whole asylum scheme costs Canadian taxpayer billions of dollars each and every year. In 2008, 89% of cases were bogus. So, in 2009, the Harper government imposed a visa on Mexican visitors and the policy worked as planned. The number of asylum claims from Mexico fell sharply, and the Mexicans who did claim asylum in Canada were much more likely to be bona fide refugees. Nothing about this new policy makes sense, except that it makes Trudeau himself look good on the world stage. When it comes to appeasing world leaders, and putting optics and feel-good politics ahead of the safety and security of Canada, well, that’s Trudeau’s specialty. http://www.therebel.media/trudeau_s_mexican_visa_reversal_puts_optics_ahead_of_canada_s_safety_security_and_balance_sheet/ *Embedded links & video* |
