So I still pick penny's off of the ground when they are on heads. I was just wondering if anybody else still has a superstition they do. Also when I feel my palm itch I scratch it on the corner of some wood it's supposed to bring you money. I don't know why I do these things I know they aren't true but it's kind of like a game to me.

Superstitions are selective to post examination.

I had a black cat cross in front of my truck one day.
Didn't think much about it except it was a pretty kitty and I like kitties.
I even owned a big black Tom at one time.

Well, about a week later my radiator started leaking. I ended up having to change it. Then a brake line went bad and had to replace that too.

Now, I did have a black cat cross my path before this all started happening.
I could, If I had the mind to, blame it on a superstition.

What actually happened is that my truck is nearly 20 years old and was driven in the Northern states during a few winters. The radiator failed from normal wear and tear and the brake line rusted out from the salt that was used on the roads in the North.
None of it had anything at all to do with the cat, black or not.

I did a study on superstitions once. I found a great number of superstitions that conflict with themselves in different cultures. Many of the ones dealing with relationships, marriages and New Years.

What many fail to realize is that when they think a superstition has come true they are considering events after the fact. If my palm gets itchy and I scratch it on wood then I get money from a rebate or a deposit refund I wasn't expecting or forgotten about I can call it a superstitious fulfillment or I can just see it as what it is.

Since we all live in our own realities and delusions we can make superstitions valid or not as to our own choosing.

What actually happened is

...what the black cat actually wants you to think.
Cats are horribly evil.
Especially black ones.
All dressed up like ninjas.
What are they trying to hide?
All the crap they did to your truck to make it look natural.

You know you can't trust a creature with no eyebrows.
All they have is a bunch of shidt sticking out.
But, they are soft.

Sports related superstitions are valid. All others are fake.

What Tom said makes a lot of sense and is pretty much how I feel about it. But occasionally I catch myself acting superstitious, mostly likely programming we get from years of hearing about superstitions. One time when I saw a black cat ahead of me, I turned and went the other way so it wouldn't cross my path.

And with penny's, I too pick up the one's that are heads up...and turn over the one's that are tails up for someone else to find. I saw it in a movie and thought it was cool.

People with O.C.D. claim they do things over and over because of "superstitions" just saying

we dont go home immediately from a wake, the belief is we should go to another place for the first stop so as whatever spirit happens to hitch with us will be left in that place instead of home slaphead

When I have told someone of a recent bad event happening to someone else, I then say and "touch wood" in order to prevent the same event happening to me, I have always done this. This act of saying then touching wood in my part of the UK seems to have its origin as by touching wood, as a symbol of the wood Cross of Jesus, protection would be given because our Lord Jesus defeated the powers of darknes by his death on the cross. There are other different origins depending on where you live in the UK. All because of peoples superstition.

Oh that's really nice. The expression here is "Knock on Wood", I wonder if it has the same origins to it. I'll have to google it.

I had to google the origins myself, I was not sure despite saying and "touch wood" all my life. laugh "Knock on wood" is probably similar, warding off misfortune from the evil spirits. Here we are in the 21st Century and still full of superstitions. laugh

 waving

I used to do smudging with sage and sweetgrass, around the house and around me with the sage. Haven't done it in a while. But it always seemed to clear the energy, like a cleansing. The sweetgrass was for getting rid of evil spirits. smile2
