There's also the points that archaeological finds rarely involve complete skeletons and ancient cultures commonly featured more diminutive frames of shorter lifespans and greater effects of ageing, disease, hard living and intrinsic variation such as genetic disorders.

Palaeoanthropology is often encumbered by the fact the further back you go, the greater amount of variation you tend to find among groupings, so much so that ancient hominid finds have confused genetic disorders and other intrinsic variations within a regional grouping with new species discoveries.

It is therefore inescapable that a bulk of archaeology and palaeoanthropology functions upon assumptions and best guess scenarios. It still adheres to scientific method where the hypothesis remains falsifiable, so as new facts are discovered, new history books are published which readily contradict previous publications. All science functions correctly this way, but it is more dramatically apparent in the study of history.

I have always thought the vikings had female war leaders as well as fighters, did not realize this wasnt scientifically documented before. We have all heard of Brynhildr right? her name means protected by the shield, or literally battle armor.

I briefly studied to be an archaeologist a very long time ago (didn't get far enough to list it as a skill area), and learned a lot of little things that aren't instantly obvious about it all.

For one thing, at least when I was in college, people weren't required to take courses in forensic biology in order to go into the fields of history or anthropology or archaeology. There are TONS of such mistakes that we learned about as part of the studies I was a part of, which served as warnings to be careful about conclusions and assumptions.

Basically, I tend to doubt that there was significant misogyny involved with this error, at least not at the discovery level. Rather, there was more of a "force of previous knowledge" bias. The people who investigate almost anything, are most likely to be hired to do so because they have knowledge and experience in that area...but that knowledge might not be nearly as reliable as the otherwise honest researchers think it is.

Anyway, excellent catch by the newer researcher.

How many male leaders, warriors, generals, kings etc are celebrated = 100's to 1000's, - but female warriors listed in history ?

Budeka
Joan of Arc
Amazon women (not Africa)
I can't think of any more right now, but far fewer women are recognised.

But then politicians and organised crime who make the wars also write the 'history', in their own favour; scribes and notaries were usually male, so they stick together with their male leaders to maintain patriarchy and position.

And then there is gender diversity throughout the ages: not everyone is either a man or a woman, straight or bent.
And not everyone gender opposite would have been found out - even in death.

There would be heaps more iconic influential females out there in history, and pre-history, if anyone looked properly.

YEA! My family history for 500yrs I am the last women viking warrior I guess in my family, they are all dead and I am 1/2 way through my life maybe 30 or 40 or less.

My family was from Norway, Around 1608, Jones purchased the Mayflower and became its Master, what we would call a captain today, Jones’ first voyage on the Mayflower was to Norway in 1609 where the ship transported fish, lumber, and tar. The ship began leaking during a storm on the way back to England and the crew had to dump some of its cargo overboard to save it.

On that ship was an ancestor of mine she was a young woman in her 20's they told me, and she was off to marry an English man. She was a teacher. She had 12 children.

One of these children moved to North Dakota gained statehood in 1889. The railroads became the engine of settlement in the state so many men and women moved to start new lives. This wonderful woman became a school teacher just like her grandmothers, he had also 9 children.

In 1888, my Great Grandmother was born, in 1915 she gave birth to her first daughter, my grandmother, at this time they moved to Minnesota she married a nice man who was in the laundry business and she was a seamstress. They had 2 sons. One was my father.

In June 10, 1950 he married a sweetheart while he was working at a gas station. He had into the Korean war, after serving when he got out, the young women cheated and broke my father's heart.

On September 1st he met my mother who was a waitress, he was still working at a gas station starting to become a contractor. He married her only because a baby was on the way! I was on the way!

His brother got married had a son but he could never have kids so they adopted.

I had 2 children who are grown.

But I am the last Viking in 500yrs who's ancessors came from Norway!

I want to thank your distant grandfather for "building" my distant grandmother a beautiful stone home and giving her beautiful, well mannered and respectful children. For giving us a wonderful life, I am so glad your family took her in and made her part of your family.

Thank you very much and thank your long distant family members for all the teachings, and educations they gave to us Vikings, also for not being anything but GREAT PEOPLE!

I went a few weeks ago, it's in northern France, built in 708. Not even the vikings could invade it!
