I don't know because I am currently not in an intimate relationship with anyone.

It depends upon which type of relationship and the person or persons involved.

I maintained a 25 year relationship with my X.
I maintain a father/child relationship with each of my children.
I maintain a grandfather/grandchild relationship with my grandchildren.
I maintained a friendship relationship with friends, coworkers and acquaintances.
I maintained enemy relationships with my enemies thru my lifetime.

I have had different intimate relationships that were maintained by different things and different severity, saturation and duration depending upon the person I was interacting with and how she interacted with me and the things/people I care about.

The variables are too specific to list.

Relationship like every other complicated machinery needs a constant attention, all the parts to be in a good working order, a proper fuel to keep the whole thing up and running and a good lubricant to minimize the mutual friction ..
If these conditions are met, there should be no big problem ..

Darned if I know! They all kept me at an arm's length and gave me the impression they'd dump me the second anything "better" came along, mass murderer, junkie, pusher, woman beater, anything. In a relationship like that you cannot "maintain" it even if you aren't as clueless with women as I am.
