I've always wondered about the origin of the phrase "tall, dark, and handsome" - the tall and handsome are pretty clear but the dark? Skin? Hair? Eyes? Soul?

I've always wondered about the origin of the phrase "tall, dark, and handsome" - the tall and handsome are pretty clear but the dark? Skin? Hair? Eyes? Soul? Not sure def, guess it could have a lot of different meanings. To me the meaning of dark is "mysterious" but I'm also attracted to men with a darker complexion and dark hair, especially from other countries.
