The only thing I don't like about vehicle servicing at a dealership is the vehicle is never ready when they say it will be, and they don't keep some parts stocked anymore.

One thing good about living in a smaller town is that less people will try to rip you off. A lot of people know each other and they will recommend where to go. They work by "word of mouth". A mechanic can do bad work, but they should know that they will get bad references.

I just had the oil changed in my truck at a dealership because I got a coupon for $9.99 which is way cheaper than doing it myself. They came and showed me my "cabin air filter" which was filthy.....they wanted $50 for a new one. I told them I'd do it myself.....checked online while I was waiting, it's a $17 part at AutoZone. I didn't even know it had a "cabin air filter".laugh

Well, I can't do my own car repairs. I can go go to my local tire store and they put air in my tires and check them for free.

A couple of years ago, I was driving and a giant bolt went into my car tire. They put on a used tire and didn't charge me. I knew that I needed to get better tires.

Too bad you don't live near me....I do repairs for people and all they have to do is buy the parts. I've never charged anyone, I kinda like doing the repairs and it makes me feel good helping people.

I think the worst thing ever is to have been a mechanic all my life, know my vehicles but can no longer do the work and have to pay someone else to do it.
Then, they still try to rip you off and you gotta get stupid with them to only do what you need done.
When I go into a shop for repairs, I already KNOW what needs to be done.
Never fails they try to 'sell' me some repair I don't need or try to 'tack' on costs I know have nothing to do with the repair.

Me too Tom.
I have a guy now that's an ex racer and so am I, I'm in a small town and word of mouth and reputation is everything. This guy and I had a long conversation before I had him do anything for me and he really tested my knowledge. Last thing I had him do he charged me less than what he quoted because it turned out I didn't need to replace a couple of parts we talked about.
