Twitter responses to this news:
Former diplomat K C Singh tweeted: “that’s less than what a revenue official charges in Punjab to get property registered.

Another response to Chidambaram: “you r bhai so innocent”. The going rate being at least one per cent.

A retired secretary of Government of India said that in terms of ease of doing business, $20,000 for FDI (foreign direct investment) of $500 million calls for a reward, not punishment.

Maybe.

What makes this case different in here is that Chiddu is from a wealthy family.
An idealist and left sympathizer.
He didn't need the 'change'

While corruption in any Government or powerful institution is inevitable it must also be kept to a minimum by harsh punishments. A policeman who takes a bribe is bad, a politician who takes a bribe is worse but worst of all is the one who enters politics only for the bribes.

I think it's being turned into an art form.

Just take a trifling from here and there,

like lifting just 1 cigar

People get into politics as two bit lawyers who can't get clients, and leave as multi millionaires. None of them "need" the change.
