Yeah, 'they' say that these days, like they used to also say that 'grandmother's wisdom was BS'. Then decades later science discovers that grandmother was right. Of course she was, it was based on knowledge that often goes back hundreds of years. They don't give grandmother credit either, they take it all. Now the Maslow Hierarchy pyramid is bull. I ask, really?? Can someone come to self-actualisation, a healthy sense of belonging, strong self-esteem and so on when they haven't got the first tier sussed? I think not! The man was spot on and there's nothing antiquated about it. |

The man was spot on and there's nothing antiquated about it. The first two tiers, "physiological" AKA food, clothing, shelter etc., and safety AKA nothing that jeopardizes life are needs. Everything else aren't "needs". I don't need love but I may WANT love. I don't "need" esteem. Self-actualization is an ambiguous term/concept based on the motivation of individuals to achieve "full potential" which can't be measured. How does a persons motivation get measured? Who determines what the "full potential" for an individual is and how can a persons "full potential" be determined until death? Psychological theories are just that, they are theories. |
