Topic: Giving up steak for Climate Change

How much energy does it take to produce a steak?

Meat and dairy products, particularly from cows and other livestock, account for around 14.5 percent of the world's greenhouse gases each year, which is about the same amount as emissions from all cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships combined.

According to a study published last year in the journal Science, beef and lamb have the biggest climate footprint per gram of protein, followed by pork and chicken. In this calculation of the average greenhouse gas emission associated with different foods, plant-based foods tend to have the smallest impact. Of course, they are also less yummy.

Thankfully, this doesn’t mean we all have to go vegan. Just eating less beef, lamb and cheese would be enough.

https://www.pnas.org/content/114/51/13412

In other words if Americans, Europeans and Japanese gave up steak then greenhouse gases 'related to the production of the food they eat' would fall by 13 percent to 25 percent - more than due to the emissions from cars / trucks

Some food for thought.

I eat a lot of vegetables and the problem is, eating loads of vegetables creates gass (ask the cows)
my question is this.

If we all suddenly switched to eating loads of wegetables and stuff, wouldn't we then become the primary source of greenhouse gas?
If my theory is right we could be on the brink of farting ourselves into an early demise. I wonder if anyone has botherecd to work it out.

If we all switched to a vegan diet, our extra gas production would be less than the gas production of the animals we would no longer eat.

The advocates of this approach ignore the fact that if we quit raising these animals and idle the fields and pastures used to feed them, they will simply be replaced by wild herbivores such as deer. They produce gasses too. I will grant that there could be a net reduction, but it would be much less than is generally claimed. It still won't matter because anthropogenic climate change is not significant.

you can argue till the sun ceases to exist... there's a line....

A line that for the truth, is always constant, always vigilant and always there....

one can justify "why" one must cross that line, to win an argument and even to bury others in that line... twisting the truth with vines for words.

manipulating, deflecting, belittling, bullying even at times to be "right" for one's own gain....

sure, do it.

but.

The planet is dying because of human habits and industry. Look for yourself. do your own research. It's there, and deep inside, you know it.
A few men, greedy men, make all the money and have all the power, and could care less about any of you. They laugh at you, and they cause it, you breath it in, and they smile... smugly....
Don't feel bad... they'll throw their own kids under the bus to face the music they were supposed to face.

What you put in our bodies can kill you slow, maintain, or heal you. Cooking always diminishes food value....fact.

Plants............... yes, some veggies are gassy, like cabbage based, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and so forth, but MOST ARE NOT. They all heal. fact.

Eggs and processed foods are far more gassy than any plant will ever be... let's not get started on cheese.

I'm not gonna get into the meat argument, because it's futile.

Do your research, and you'll find out, but until you do, you can't come up with a conclusion. Remember, that there is money at "steak" with the meat industry, and you MUST look past the landscapes they paint to see the truth.

I live in an area with a big industry of ranches raising cows. I don't think too many people will give up eating beef. It's also a big fishing town. A good river goes through here and people like Salmon and trout.

Also, much of the land cattle are grazed on is unsuitable for row-cropping.

At least five major ice ages have occurred throughout Earth's history: the earliest was over 2 billion years ago, and the most recent one began approximately 3 million years ago and continues today (yes, we live in an ice age!). Currently, we are in a warm interglacial that began about 11,000 years ago.

LOWERN is an acronym for 6 factors that affect climate.

Latitude. Depending on how close or how far it is to the equator.
Ocean currents. Certain ocean currents have different temperatures. ...
Wind and air masses. Heated ground causes air to rise which results in lower air pressure.
Elevation.
Relief.
Nearness to water.

Greenhouse gases cause the greenhouse effect. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone.

Methane, not necessarily derived from gas hydrates, is emitted directly to the atmosphere at ebullition sites in shallow lakes within permafrost and probably in open water on shallow Arctic shelves.

7 Main Stages of a Star

A Giant Gas Cloud.
A Protostar Is a Baby Star.
The T-Tauri Phase.
Main Sequence Stars.
Our Star, the Sun (Sol) is currently in Main Sequence.
Expansion into Red Giant.
Fusion of Heavier Elements.
Supernovae and Planetary Nebulae.

Basically, the Sun gets hotter everyday.

Climate change is natural.
Climate change is a planetary process.
Human activity/presence does 'contribute' to global warming but is not causing it.
Humans cannot stop/prevent global warming.
Our impact on the whole is fractional.

As the interglacial period continues more of the ice melts from the surface of the Earth.
Ice/snow (white stuff) reflects solar radiation.
Land/water (dark stuff) absorbs solar radiation.
Greenhouse gasses trap the radiation causing a warming (blanket) of the Earth's surface reducing its reflectivity by melting even more ice/snow.
Water vapor and carbon dioxide are the two most abundant greenhouse gasses and are a direct result of the warming process.

The water cycle

Step 1: Evaporation.
Step 2: Condensation.
Step 3: Sublimation.
Step 4: Precipitation.
Step 5: Transpiration.
Step 6: Runoff.
Step 7: Infiltration.

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) is what oxygen breathing life on this planet exhales.
The average human exhales about 2.3 pounds of carbon dioxide on an average day.
There are about 7.6 billion people alive right now, breathing.
There is a net gain of 1 new person every 18 seconds.
However, humans are not the only life forms on this planet breathing.
Humans share the planet with as many as 8.7 million different forms of life.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.
There are about 391,000 species of vascular plants currently known to science.

How many 391,000's go into 8,700,000?
It's obvious plants can't be the only CO2 sink.
The ocean acts both as a source and a sink, releasing carbon dioxide and absorbing it through natural processes. Volcanic eruptions act as a natural source of CO2.

The point I am making is global warming is a natural Earth process and a cycle.
While human activity contributes to the end result it certainly is not the cause and therefore can't be cured by human restrictions.

Eat all the steak you want!
I'll take mine med-rare.

"People make problems. No people. No problems."
Joseph Stalin

We are about due for another world war soon. Some are saying the USA will be in a civil war in around 2030. The global war will be in around 2050. This should whipe out half the population of human beings. Then the cycle can resume again with another world war in around 100-150 years.

I generally rotate beef, chicken and pork.
This month I'm dedicating pork meals instead of beef.
Gonna also say, God Bless America, God bless President Trump, Merry Christmas, bless baby Jesus and pledge allegiance to our flag.
New Years I'll eat a steak in honor of Acid Rain.

I will eat deer, boar, Possum, Gator, Snake or any other wild dead if one is hit in front of me fresh, as there is no sense in waste. (or if they come to me with "less than friendly intentions" which is rare, but has happened), and all water food pretty much. I will usually smoke it. I do fish for Bass, Salmon, and Barracuda at different times of the year, and places in the world, but take only what I need. all the rest is veggies and fruit.

I also SO hope some of you ARE right about your climate and your world. Time will tell, or run out. I'm just passin through... but I have noticed severe changes from one decade to the next on my travels from place to place in a 45 year span done only by man.

It really is pretty bad, people.

Boar are on the rise and we cam't eat em fast enough... poor Texas is hit the worst, but they are everywhere I've been.... they also taste amazing... something HAS to be done.laugh

I used to hunt and trap feral hogs on a cattle ranch in Fort Stockton. In one week, I processed 98. Couldn't keep up with the breeding.
The meat never went to waste. Lean. Zero fat.
I've offered my hire here, in this area. As soon as a child gets killed by one I'll get hired. Folks rarely do preventive maintenance. Sad.

Oh my gosh! That's insane! And a very busy time of it indeed. You'd think, what with all the hunters in our areas that they'd be jumpin at the chance to fill up the freezer, and given permission to do so.

They will eat ANYTHING, kinda like land-sharks if they are in a sounder. I know you've seen this but others have not, hence the lack of "preventative maintenance". sorry for those losses.

They are HUGE in our swamps in LA., and in Florida, below Kissimmee-St.Cloud area and are extremely dangerous. There are not near as many as there though, not even close. It's a good chance the massive snakes loose from the zoo during Hurricane Andrew that are also invasive are making a dent in the numbers. Sadly, the Snakes have been caught eating kids too. They've also been attacking Gators, our Apex predator.

Before I start slam dunkin' on y'all, I want to point out that LAB GROWN MEAT and WORKING CLASS PEOPLE HOLDING CORPORATIONS ACCOUNTABLE is the most likely solution to this crisis. Meat is delicious and (usually) healthy, and can be more delicious and healthy when it's grown in a lab. It's just expensive to produce, but as time goes on, research will get it down to quite cheap. Also, learn to experiment with soybeans, quinoa, and lentils. ;)

Edit: Also, if you can't find legitimate, academic or scientific evidence of what I'm saying (not conspiracy theory blog posts) via Googling my phrases (I tried that for your guys' info) then feel free to ask for a source. I have access to academia.edu, JSTOR and other things. More than happy to pirate a PDF for you folks.

But, all in all, a lot of pseudoscientific nonsense here. I recommend you all do a basic read-up on SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT and stop listening to old dudes with poor lighting in their bedroom who don't know how to angle a webcam.

Here's a good one for you- How much feed does it take to get a turkey to weigh 25 pounds?

I can't speak for turkeys, but broiler chickens add edible meat to their body at a 4:1 ratio. Grass fed beef is (I believe) 17:1 and grain fed beef is 54:1.

What did you give up for Global Warming or acid rain? All proven to be money grabbing hoaxes.

Post your sources. Legitimate ones.

The climate has changed for as long as there has been a climate.

Certainly not at the rate that it has now. And even so, there are things we can do to control it.

In reality, I don't think that there's enough arable and viable agricultural land to feed everyone and meat contains vital and essential elements that you don't find elsewhere.

In reality, there certainly is. In fact, that land being used to feed animals is much less efficient than just growing crops. And to say that you can't get things from meat in other sources? Nonsense. There are tons of vegan bodybuilders.

If we all suddenly switched to eating loads of wegetables and stuff, wouldn't we then become the primary source of greenhouse gas?

See my comment about adding another production of gas between ours. Besides, cows farting (lol, I'm immature) isn't necessarily the main issue; yes methane is a big deal but in general we're wasting a lot of the nutrients in our soil. And no, cow fertilizer doesn't replenish it as quickly as it's taken away.

I find it VERY hard to believe that livestock and cattle produce as much or more as all vehicles and planes combined.

You're correct! Corporations by and large do way more pollution than individuals. You don't have to go vegan. What you should due is lobby against large corporations. You sound smart, what else do you have to say on the issue?

So much so that I do not believe it. I believe this is all part of the huge scam of Codex Alimentarius which was designed shortly after WW2 by ppl in America and ex Nazi scientist, also in America, to control the world population with food.

Oof. A conspiracy so vast that it would have leaked with irrefutable evidence by now. No thanks, I'll stick to actual verifiable methods we have.

In some twisted fantasy, you could say the removal of mass quanities of fish from the ocean might cause the oceans to cool because there is not as much movement in the oceans.

Glad you admit it's a twisted fantasy. But overfishing destroys the entire food chain, that's the main problem. It's very real. Tuna should be way, way more expensive than it is, considering the damage it does to the environment when you eat it. Farmed tuna is quite a bit better choice, but still not perfect.

Our species global population is nearing 10 billion.

You can Google "overpopulation myth" and find some fascinating modern evidence on how our crisis is way more political. We could theoretically hold up to 25 billion people on our planet. But yes, allowing women publicly subsidized access to birth control, and giving GOOD QUALITY, EMOTIONALLY CONNECTING SEX EDUCATION to our kids is a great solution.

I'm tired of hypocrites who use thousands of times the resources that I do, that I and people like me need to give up this or that, eat insects etc to save the planet, when they have no intention of giving up anything.

I'm sorry, who are those people? Seems a strawman argument to me, but feel free to counter.

I'm not giving up eating beef. Just because some nut jobs think that's going to save the world doesn't mean I have to follow. If they'd stop tearing down state forests the trees would suck up all the farts so we wouldn't have to smell them.

"Nut jobs" as in scientists? People who dedicate their lives to understanding biology and agriculture? But hey, great point about how deforestation is a huge issue.

Anthropogenic climate change is largely mythological.

I've yet to see a REAL SOURCE on this and I've been trying for more than a decade.

At least five major ice ages have occurred throughout Earth's history: the earliest was over 2 billion years ago, and the most recent one began approximately 3 million years ago and continues today (yes, we live in an ice age!). Currently, we are in a warm interglacial that began about 11,000 years ago.

A lot of what's in your long post is certainly true, but nobody is debating any of that. At all. All we're saying is that in the last few hundred years, and especially the last decade, we're making way more of a negative impact on the planet than any other species has before.
