Another 'would you do this' topic, totally different scenario, again because of a movie I watched.
This time... we're going under water! They have discovered an alien vessel at the bottom of the ocean, and you have some skill that is required for the research. Now this means going down there for at least 2 weeks, living and working in confined space, decompression required etc. BUT you do have the chance to see the alien ship, and lord knows what's there, maybe even aliens themselves! No one knows yet. A chance of a lifetime, or is it? Tons of water above you... You can't just walk out the door when something happens, or when you freak out or if there's a nasty alien. Would you go? |

Would love to say yes and probably would have over 20 yrs ago but no I couldn’t. I hate confined spaces now so would feel too claustrophobic and probably have a panic attack now sadly

I'm not sure how I'd do with the confined space, but the thought of tons of water above and around me... not being able to just leave. THAT scares me. |

Would you go? How much are they going to pay me? Who is in charge? Who is my boss? What exactly are my duties? I mean it's one thing if it's all "we need you to solve this mystery room puzzle box to unlock the secrets of the universe," vs., "based on TSA airport scans, your arms are the exact dimensions we need to unclog the alien toilet. The alien that everyone has met via tv interview is a nice guy, but he just keeps clogging his toilet." How deep under the ocean? How safe is it? I mean is the "special skill" they need just "we're going to throw people at this door until it opens, it's killed the last 9,986,993, in some horrific and painful ways, now it's your turn!" Or "hey, we're got this cage we're going to put you in and dangle you in front of the alien while we swim behind them and steal their ship! I think we worked out the kinks in the cage this time!" If you're talking about "The Sphere" or "The Abyss" with the big rig and support system and teams in place, big pay, then yes. If you're referring to "The Abyss" where the lone guy gets put in a space suit and has to breath liquid while falling into a trench to his inevitable but maybe not death, then no. |

Absolutely! Nice :) And adventurous ! It's only for two weeks, longer than that and I might think about it a bit more, haha. :) It was at least 2 weeks. Could turn out to become longer... Let's say it was for at least a month... then how would you feel about it? I would still want to go, it sounds exciting. I would want to meet the other crew first, a lot would depend on their energy, but unless it was dark energy, I'm sure we'd all get along fine. |

Yes and if by myself, a bigger YES.
But I would do it alien ship or no alien ship. I would also do a one way trip to another star (automated ship). I find the oceans fascinating. The mysteries of the deep. I have spend hours looking at bathymetry maps and love videos which drain the oceans. So much to explore! As for the "alien ship"... Not much lure for me. The keyword there is "alien" and if it is alien it is from a civilization not from Earth. Most of everything I see will also be "alien" and I wouldn't have a clue as to what it is or what it does. May not even see it as something significant. When showing alien in movies, there's too many assumptions made. This is because if it is truly depicted as alien the audience won't be able to identify with it. Much of the filming is dedicated to teaching the audience what it is and what it does. This is why I like the strangest stuff in alien movies. The stuff nobody understands. For instance, Most movie alien ships have a control room with control panels. Lights and levers and buttons and gizmos. Truly alien may not have this. It may be a bio-mental interface with the ship controlled by the will of the alien with no readouts, lights buttons or gizmos, just a room with blank walls. It could be there is no walls or floor, just a series of spheres which the alien passes thru by phasing. Then there is scale. Ever see the movie *batteries not included? What if the ship you find is a colony ship filled with tiny compartments holding microscopic residents in microscopic habitats? Since alien is unknown, if its alien, we will have no idea what it is or does. We may have difficulty even identifying anything significant. |

I travelled overnight on a ferry to France and the cabin was 2 decks below the car decks and probably the size of a bathroom. I had a panic attack during the night because I realised I couldn’t escape or go anywhere. I sure wouldn’t like to repeat the experience and ever since then I feel claustrophobic. My car’s roof in all glass (not a sunroof) and I bought it because it’s bright and I don’t feel hemmed in it. If it wasn’t for this then sure, I’d love to venture into the unknown and possibly be one of the first to discover an alien race. That would be soooo exciting. |

I'm not claustrophobic per say, but I do tend to get ratty when in a confined space for too long with other people. I've been on a marine ship, horrible. And I think not having daylight for a few weeks on end would drive me nuts. I was once on a nine month deployment, and did not see the sun for three months. My duties were below the waterline standing a six and six watch rotation making fresh water. You adjust as long as you have something to do. The Six and six watches do not leave much free time so your activities are reduced to the bare minimum to be able to function. |
