why aren't the most recent posts listed first? seems ridiculous that you have to go through old posts to get to most recent??

Correct me if I'm wrong but you are referring to the thread reply sort right?
On many forums the most recent reply appears at the top of the thread.
I was confused by this at first too.

Note the header at the top.
It sorts by RECENT POSTS and MY TOPICS.
The sort for 'recent posts' sorts the threads (topics) with the most recent reply at the top of the thread list.
If the thread has multiple pages you can view the page containing the most recent reply by clicking the lil number. You still have to scroll down to find the most recent post tho.
