Is it the new age in dating when someone meets you online and thinks God made your paths cross and the other person believes you were destined for one another. I believe in getting to know someone first and taking it slow is the better route. Or am I just to old fashioned? Or was it because the other person was 14 years younger, and may think differently about how the dating world goes. Any thoughts from others?

The only thought I have is that your thread title is an oxymoron. Dating is not done online.

Everyone has different ideas, but I agree in getting to know them first is the best route, and you can really to get to know someone online by becoming friends when you cannot meet them for any reason, maybe because they live to far away from you. I would keep it as online friendship, not becoming too much invested or form any other relationship other than friendship until you meet them in person more than once, after which you can both decide if it could be something more, that way no one is hurt if it is not to be. If they do live far away, first think about what it could involve.

It CAN be like the Divine made your paths cross. I know people that met via an online dating site and are now happily together, bought a house, got married etc.
So it'd be fair to assume that people with that experience will feel that it's like that.
I've had that experience myself too btw. Twice. Okay, it didn't last, but that's got little to do with it.
The feeling of hitting it off right away, being a good match, and things taking off from there.

And I assume people that have been on online dating sites and not had much luck so far tell the other story.

I don't think there's much difference with normal meetings of people. In some cases you hit it off right away, in other cases it takes a little time.
