Ukraine and Russia are the top suppliers of sunflower oil, making up over 60 per cent of the total exports.

The conflict in eastern Europe has halted the oil’s shipments, leaving countries such as India scouring for alternative sources such as Argentina. As long as the war continues, edible oil prices will rule at elevated levels.

In a related report

Bulk of palm group of oils / alternate to sunflower oil comes from Indonesia.

Indonesia has banned exports due to rising domestic prices.

Soya bean and Mustard oil ( Canola) are rising.

Soya bean farmers in US have lower yield this year.

Looks like 1.5 billion Indians will have to simmer their curry in cow or pork fat. Last tie such an incident happened, the Hindus & Muslims got together for first time and threw out the British.
The Brits then returned back on Sikh power.

This time no one knows. It's the temperature here. One takes animal fat - the insides simmer

I don't know why, but there is no shortage of sunflower oil in Ireland, though rapseed oil was more popular anyway. Or in my case, olive oil.

Different story in my native country Germany, people there are really screwed :zipper_mouth:

There’s a shortage in the UK. The stores that have stock of sunflower oil are restricting customers as to the quantity they are allowed to purchase.

The shortages, I believe, are part of a larger
government plan, to cripple the world economy.

It's due to the current war in Ukraine. The national flower is the sunflower with sunflower oil being a major export.

The use of horizontal blue and yellow of their flag is a representation of the sunflower fields against a blue, cloudless sky

There is a shortage of olive oil too in UK but not as bad as sunflower oil. Not sure if the same applies to US though.

I only cook with olive oil, even when a recipe calls for vegetable or canola oil.

what
Now the whole thing falls in place.

sunflower tilts towards east in the morning sun, resulting in a swaying motion to the west with the sun

Sunflower honey tastes very sweet giving an acrid kick that doesn't last long and isn't unpleasant.

Add wheat basket of Europe

Add, oil & gas in surrounding sea
Imagine the gall of Ukraine's oil company offering director's appointment to USA's Vice President's son. I believe Hunter was innocent. How was he to know of Ukraine's oil mafia?

Add, hefty tariff on oil pipelines laid by Russia for oil to Europe since breakup of Soviet Union

Add, hefty investment in treasury bonds by Russia to keep Ukrainian currency from going under 2 years ago

Yet, Ukrainian farmers with land holdings of 500 acres average were living on poverty lines?

2015, Ukraine cuts off 90% water supply to annexed Crimea annexed in 2014. Crimean's agriculture collapsed.

March 2019, Zelensky, TV star got massive election mandate because previous pro-Russian government was corrupt. Nothing changed.

Then Russia signs a deal with Germany over an undersea pipeline that bypassed Ukraine (Merkel)

2021 - Pipeline closed at Biden's insistence after Merkel retired.

Feb 2022, Russian invasion begins.
Rest, in Ukraine thread

Now, no cooking oil and Asia wakes up.

C_oil prices here are 50% above what it was in February and anticipated to go up.

Size of Indian bread slice (chappathi) just got smaller. Was astonished that an Indian channel used an African country's problem to highlight our own.

The guys towards the end of this 2 min video speaks fair English, I thought you may enjoy this treat.

I was thinking the same except bacon grease, can't afford chicken right now at $6 a lb, eggs are crazy too, what once was an affordable semi-healthy choice has gotten crazy, hopefully they can get control of the flu and get things back to normal soon.

I have worked at many restaurants doing welding repair on kitchen equipment and one of the secrets according to many chefs is the grease they use day in and day out. Same grease strained and restrained thousands of times. Some even keep their grease under lock and key. Oils and grease have had value long before these high prices to effect.

Fertilizer price hike in India up by 12%
Government subsidy expected shortly.

Factors:

Potash - Ukraine - large exporter - halted exports

Phosphates: From Russia - sanctions

LNG: in short supply
The methane in LNG is 'burnt' in Nitrogen rich atmosphere to produce ammonia which in turn is a contributor to nitrogen rich fertilizer. (process to be confirmed)
