"...because I feel the hope in this country and the eagerness of people for change" [paraphrased]

Don't quote blatantly out of context, it's disingenuous.

She clarified her remark today saying that she was "extremely" proud at this point because of the mobilization and passion of voters in this primary season. [again, paraphrased]

Yeah... Heard that yesterday, and she's been taking a beating for it... Trying to explain what she "meant" today... She said it twice in the speach,so we know what she meant.
As for me.... Damn proud to be an American...

She stuffed her foot ankle deep in her mouth with that comment. Doesn't matter though. Soon as her husband loses the election they'll both be forgotten.

well, i'm 24 and since the latter part of hs i haven't really been proud of today's america. once i realized the teachings and words of our founding fathers are being molested and ignored on a daily, i've become disillusioned with our greatness.

we may be better than most anywhere else in the world, that doesn't mean that we're the america we should be

That was funny. laugh I am disillusioned with politicans, so I set my sights low, when it comes to voting. While I'm proud to be an Amercian, I am concerned we (Americans) are being viewed in such a poor light.

To err is human, and with the incrediable amount of media exposure they have both had the past year and a half...a person is bound to slip! She did not mean this was the "only" time she felt proud, it was a mistaken error.

Speaking of errors...look at how many new "Bushisms" we have each year! We could laugh with 3-a-day calenders!

Ah...2008! An end of an error! I mean..."era"laugh

merlot42......

She can't explain what she said other than it was a racist remark and it tells America what she is all about. As you indicated, she said it in two prepared speeches. Her remarks were not off the cuff, but once again, they were prepared speeches. This woman has one heck of a nerve complaining about America. She is a Harvard grad; it is quite difficult to get into Harvard and she was accepted, which indicates she has had a lot more advantages than most of us. How dare she use such racist rhetoric, particularly when it isn't necessary since 82 per cent of black Americans are voting for her husband.

She said it twice and and while I don't think she really means it (because thats just effin nutz)I think she was trying to get across that she means it. Whats more.... This camp has been pounding the Clinton camp (not that I really care) about "Words" meaning things...

here's some other passages in her speeches...being a Princeton Harvard educated person and a praticinf attorney bringing in over $200K a year I wonder how she can claim to know what oppression is..

"People who've been oppressed and haven't been given real opportunities. That you never really believe. That you believe that somehow, someone is better than you. You know, deep down inside, you doubt whether you can do it, because that's all you've been told, is "no, wait." That's all you hear, and you hear it from people who love you. Not because they don't care about you, but because they're afraid. They're afraid that something might happen."

and I luv this part..."black America will wake up, and get [it]"

"MICHELLE OBAMA: First of all, I think that that's not going to hold. I'm completely confident: black America will wake up, and get [it]. But what we're dealing with in the black community is just the natural fear of possibility. You know, when I look at my life, the stuff that we're seeing in these polls has played out my whole life. You know, always been told by somebody that I'm not ready, that I can't do something, my scores weren't high enough. You know, there's always that doubt in the back of the minds of people of color. People who've been oppressed and haven't been given real opportunities. That you never really believe. That you believe that somehow, someone is better than you. You know, deep down inside, you doubt whether you can do it, because that's all you've been told, is "no, wait." That's all you hear, and you hear it from people who love you. not sure what speech you all are referring to, but this is the a portion of her speech in Milwaukee on Monday:

not sure what's the problem??? can she not express her feelings or is it because they dont coincide with your own?

"Speaking in Milwaukee, Wis., on Monday, she said, “People in this country are ready for change and hungry for a different kind of politics and … for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”

Greeted with rousing applause after making the comment in Milwaukee, Obama delivered an amended version of the speech later that day in Madison, Wis.

“For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country … not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change,” she said. “I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment.”

Lindyy:

To me, she has made too many remarks referring to race. The whole primary presidential campaign on the democrat side has been focused on race and sexual gender.

Is that what being the President of the USA is all about to them? Guess so. That is all you hear.

It is a shame, disgrace rather, that Mrs. Obama is JUST NOW proud to be an American.explode

And the racist remark she made:

"Obama's wife rose to his defense over Bill Clinton's "fairy tale" comment. Michelle Obama said some blacks might be skeptical that white America will elect her husband, but advised them to look to his win in Iowa.
"Ain't no black people in Iowa,"

So, now we are "White America"? Whoa, she needs to keep her terminology 'in check.'

and "Ain't no black people in Iowa."

AS FOR ME, I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. I did not have to wait until someone from my Swedish, Irish or French ancestry did something special to be proud to be an American.

LAURA BUSH - No female will ever surpass her in wisdom, intellect, gracefulness and elegance. She is the epitome of womanhood. Has anyone ever watched her being interviewed? She keeps herself totally composed, and racist and sexual remarks never flow from her mouth. I have yet to hear her ever criticize anyone, and that woman has had to endure so many hateful remarks about her husband, it is absolutely disgusting of this country to even let anyone degrade our President the way President Bush has been, yet First Lady Laura Bush remains composed and rational. Just look at the remarks on this thread alone. I wonder where the INTELLECT of some people in this country has disappeared to.

I for one care about who is the First Lady, she represents the women of the USA (or at least she is supposed to, and not just a certain race.)

Quit *****ing and do something, such as setting a PROPER example of a good citizen YOURSELF, for starters.

All you people do is *****, *****, ***** about the USA. A bunch of spoiled BRATS not happy or content with anything. Maybe if you had some of your FREEDOMS taken away, perhaps you would wake up and realize how good you have it here in the USA.

"For the first time in my adult life, I am proud to be an American........."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unlike Michelle Obama, I can't keep track of the number of times I've been proud of my country and grateful to be not only born in America, but also privileged to live in this country.

Additionally, what is this business of change? Mrs. Racist Obama acts as if her husband originated the word and that there has never been any change in our country.

Mrs. Obama is 43 years old; therefore, she was an adult when the Berlin Wall fell, isn't that a bit of change? What about the fall of communism? Isn't that some more change? We've lived through decades' worth of election cycles in our country, which have brought about "change" and upheaval, both good and bad. What about that Mrs. Obama?

So, Mrs. Obama although you were an adult through several launches of the space shuttle, you have never been proud of that? You grew up in the technology age and have witnessed and benefited from advances in technology, communications, science and medicine pioneered by American entrepreneurs who yearned to change the world and succeeded. But that doesn't count as change or having pride in America?

How about all of the money Americans have sent to help victims of AIDS, particularly in Africa? You are not proud of that? How about Americans helping Southeast Asis, including those affected by the 2004 tsunami? How about when we sent the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group that sped from Hong Kong to assist survivors? Of course, why should you be proud of those things? You were too busy being a racist.

Oh, Mrs. Obama, so your feelings and statements are that up until your husband ran for president, you were not proud of our country. Well, I am going to tell you something. Up until you opened your racist mouth, I was proud of my country. Now I am ashamed that my country has a major party, the Democrats, who will probably nominate a man for president who is married to a racist.

I've been too busy with work to read through these posts as rigorously as I ought to...so forgive me if I've missed something.

The only thing I wanted to comment on was Leah's mention that there has been magnanimous change in the United States well before Obama.

You cited the Berlin wall, and the end of communism...but I believe that the change Obama (Barack) is speaking of is a domestic change, more of an inter-governmental change.

Traditionally, the basic definition of a liberal was someone who promoted change, while a conservative was one to preserve the status quo. Your only reference of domestic change was the space shuttle, which was launched by a liberal.

I'm not saying those other changes globally aren't significant...clearly they are. But they're not what Obama's "change" is referring to.
