I liked Beavis and Butthead too. Man, I miss that show. This thread should be moved to the "Movies and TV" section.

The idea that people would go to hell simply because they didn’t believe in a specific picture of God certainly does belong in humor. I’ll be the first to agree with that.

It’s a shame that the designers of that religion got so greedy. Had they stuck to just offering paradise for believers, and mere death to non-believers, at least they would have something that could borderline on the believable.

The problem is that they tried to make out like behavior was paramount. It was supposed to be all about sin (willful disobedience of God’s rules) and salvation (repenting for sins, and trying to live a life of obedience).

Had they stuck to that one theme they might have had a half-way believable story. But they couldn’t resist the temptation to also make this God angry with even good people who simply don’t believe in the religion. That flies in the face of the idea that the God was truly concerned with behavior in the first place.

So they created a paradox. Good people can end up going to hell just because they don’t believe in the religion, and bad people can end up going to heaven just because they decide to become believers. It’s clearly not about a God at all, it’s all about the religion.

Evidently being good and doing good works is totally meaningless, the thing that has become paramount is a belief in the religion. It’s a case where the religion itself stole the show from the God it was initially supposed to be about.

So yes, file it in with Beavis and Butthead where it belongs. bigsmile

laugh I couldn't agree more... I was thinking earlier, "why don't we have fun anymore?" Everything has gotten a bit too serious. Yes our beliefs are important but so is giving respect to others... and so is letting go and being silly. And shouldn't our beliefs bring us joy? The world is full of beauty and amazing, amusing creatures... And I have but to look at penguins or giraffes to be certain that the creator has a wonderful sense of humor.

I have to say I haven't really seen this side of you before Miles...

but I like it, I like it!!!

And blessings to you. flowerforyou
