okay my son is going to be 1 in a couple months and we wanted to start planning it out now but we are like completely clueless on what to do, we were going to hire a clown to make balloon animals and stuff but he is deadly afraid of clowns! so now i have no idea....? any ideas?

For a one year old, the party is more for the parents than the baby. When my youngest turned one, we had a big party, no clowns, he was also afraid. But, we got him his own cake, set him up in the high chair and let him go to town with his hands just to see how messy he could get. It was so much fun and people took so many pictures.

He's seven now, and he STILL loves looking at those.

Congrats!drinker

Honestly, at age one, the party is more for the parents. Your son won't remember a thing about it. Just make it a fun day for the key people in your son's life. Other than that everything else is extra.

At 1 year old??

Have it for a few close friends, show him off, be congratulated a lot, and accept it is for you. Why not? you deserve it.

He is not going to be that aware that it is a special day for him, and he certainly isn't going to remember it. I sympathise with him about the clowns.
If you want to make it about him; Love him, take some pictures, play with him, buy some toys, take some more pictures, but a party? No.
You'll spend more time with other people than with him.

he is only 1 i would suggest making a cake decoraed with one of his favorite theme ideas

racing football sesame street something that gets thier attention

and invite those he cares about over cousins aunts uncles grandparents those he shows attention to when he sees them

other than that why push the issue

if you go all out now

then what will be expected next time and the time after that

good luck with whatever you decide

absolutely the best advice, i could offer none better. If i were you this is what i would be listening to. He is one, this party is for you more than for him.

Just remember whatever you plan that life can be unpredictable. My friend & I had our babies 3 years apart, right before Christmas (when everyone just has all the time in the world to come to a party). On their 1st B'day we went all out, rented a hall for the party, invited all the couples from our lamaze class and their kids, all of the family members for both kids. We had over 50 people who said they were coming to the party. Well my Larry and her Angel both got sick the day before the party, they were running a fever, couldn't hold down their food, put on a pedialyte only diet. So there we were calling all the other parents saying don't bring your kids, and there they were sitting in their high chairs with their little red cheeks caring less about their cake. Cindy and I still laugh about how upset we were at the time, but the kids, they don't remember it all.

<<<< Did the same for both of my kids. That was the best part- watching them get that cake everywhere..
