Topic: New sins? ... weren't there enough?

The Pope announced 7 new sins which include ...

1. "Bioethical" violations such as birth control
2. "Morally dubious'' experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty

While I absolutely agree with notions of treading gently upon the earth for my own reasons ... not the least of which is that live on it and am sustained by it. I don't feel that naming it a 'sin' will change my relationship with mother earth at all.

And if naming it a sin does change people's behaviour toward the earth, will that not then show that change came from a place of guilt and fear of punishment...rather than from an empowered sense of love and what we inherently know is right?

For the record, I am not Catholic...nor do I ascribe to any religious doctrine. I find this all quite curious though ...and would be interested in other's opinions.

I clearly do not have an understanding of how this works. I was under the impression that the list of 'sins' came from God.

What do you think of the 'new' sins? Do you think it appropriate to label them as sins? Or could they have been shared with the fellowship another way?

Das strange ya? I like number 4 though. 5,6 and 7 seem kinda redundant and far fetched.

It might appear so...now. But isn't there a city of wealth under the vatican?

I am hoping others with an understanding of the new sins will be able to enlighten...

I agree with all but the first two, however we don't need the pope to make a new set of rules as these are just common biblical sense;^]

I have to agree.

I think 5, 6, and 7 are semantical variations of the same concept.

i don't see how any of these are new....

5,6,7 would be considered greed i would think....

3 i'd say would be gluttany....

1 lust, your not having sex for procriation if your stopping it..

2 well that in some people's eyes would be murder, especially christians and catholics...

and 4, well i don;t know what to call that one but i know somewhere in teh bible it talks about respecting the earth and how it was a sin to abuse it for personal gain.....

they forgot one

----Girotti said the Catholic Church continued to be concerned about pedophilia but said that excessive coverage of the past scandals must be decried because it "discredits the church."----

I agree that the notions are not new.

But what do you think about the Pope deciding to declare them actual sins in their own right? That I find quite curious. What purpose does it serve...in the greater good ... to label them sins?

Then they are ruled by ego ... and if one is ruled by ego how can they proclaim to speak for God?

I sooo want to continue this conversation but I am running late for work... I will check back tonight.
