hmmmmmm maybe the presentation???? good question...not sure I can explain it

I think this is a viable answer. flowerforyou

Eloquence in speech and organization, verification of facts, and not putting your audience on the defensive is more palatable than someone who spews their opinions willy-nilly with ignorance, hate, and unfounded information.

Eloquence....check.

Organised speech and grammar....check.

Verification of facts.....check.

Not putting the audience on the defensive.....hmmmmm....so that's the problem....thanks Melody.

I guess I am just naturally abrasive....(it's the accent, isn't it?) laugh

lol I wasn't thinking of that....I was thinking more along the lines of what metal wing says. when you start something out like "hey biotch" that could be offensive

I get called that often so I'm ok with it laugh

What's the difference between being offensive and holding an unpopular opinion?

If someone finds something that I say or do offensive..does not necessarily mean it was my intention to offend them..
I don't swear around my mother..it offends her. Everyone gets to choose what is offensive to them.
Personally I don't take offensive to much of anything..there is always something to be offended by if your looking...

"I believe the bible is a book of fairytails"

"I believe killing animals to eat them is murder"

Both are opinions which are also deemed "offensive". No attacking necessary.

Ahhh but the sensitive and defensive folk take offense to that.

They personalise those statements and make them about themselves, and need to justify by being offended and attacking.

Very true I do not get offended when those that say they are not religious or believe that is your opinion but now if one goes to the point of telling others their belief is wrong because they do. Then one gets into the offensive part of it.

The way I see things you believe what you want to I believe what I want to but it should never interfere with a friendship......noway

Having a differing opinion is one thing. Attacking a person who has and opposeing opinion and calling names is offensive.

To hold an unpopular position in a non-offensive way, I keep the focus on me.

I believe this to be true because .........
This resonates with me and what I value in these ways ........

You might not agree but I have not made you wrong.

to be offensive puts the other in a position of defense

You are wrong ...........
You are an idiot .......
Prove it ...........

It is much more confrontational in my opinion.

That being said ... some people are just looking for a reason to be offended sometimes

Twice in the last week I have made a post using a joke as satire. In both cases I was attacked and accused of being stupid, uneducated, uninformed, and possessing politics of a certain type by someone who knew absolutely none of the above. It makes sense to find out what someone is thinking before assuming you know their position. If you assume someone's position, you are being offensive unless you know them well. Attacking the person is almost always offensive.

What about when someone has an "offensive" odor, or wore an "offensive" colour...

It seems to me like the word "offensive" is the go-to word for anything that isn't socially acceptable or popular.

ohwell
