I have an ethical question about how people gauge another persons character,,,with just one or two details about their life

If you had to pick the WORST of these three people who would you choose?

A. someone who worked charity every other day of the year, but cheated on their wife the other days

B. Someone who traveled the globe giving pro bono medical care nine months a year, took the summer off, and was convicted of (non fatal) domestic abuse of his wife one night,

OR

C. Someone who did neither good nor bad(assuming its possible for the sake of argument) all year long

interesting,, I would say realistically that I dont know who is the worst,,,but if I was FORCED to choose, I would say the man who did nothing was the worst,,,at least the other two made contributions to the world

Hummm sorry but A & B would be real close to each other. Just because one works charities does not make them a good person. A good person comes from how they treat people year round not just when they choose too.

That is like saying a priest that molested young boys is a good person cause he served God all year but he only did that one time. nowayJMO ( This is only and excample that came to my mind at the time) So hope no one reads anything into the excample I used..To me that one thing would erase anything good he had done within my mind.

B

But I see where you're coming from.

I'd choose B as well. Making contributions to the world does not make violence ok. It also does not make cheating ok.

Good and bad is all relative. I'm sure the victims of the first two examples do not care contributions their tormentors made to society.

Personally if anyone did any great acts,,,that act is to be judged by only one for his life spent doing or not doing any acts of
contributions to others..
I would see this person ONLY as NOT being a GOOD PERSON,,for their
Evil they do,,,is not over-weighed by their efforts to GIVE to others,,,,in MY MIND anyway,,,,

Think of a priest, who has done so much in his forty years of serving GOD,,yet,,he molests one of the alter boys..
In your analogy you give here,,,We should just FORGIVE THAT,,as his good deeds out weigh his bad?,,,,,,,,NO...

You can't say C. does nothing.
If they work and pay taxes they are helping people all over the world.

exactly..they could be good parents, behaved children, good employers, loving partners..just normal people that do no harm to others, mind their own business and livs their own lives...which isn't a bad thing .

In this type of scenario I would always say C...

Because I do not like ones who, play, hurt, use, or corrupt.

So with C,,,,IT would be safe to assume THEY,,have not done any BAD ACTS,,,as we KNOW that A and B HAVE!!

"Good" or "Bad" is not a character trait in my books. Yes, I've encountered good people and bad people, but those qualifiers were always done from a practical standpoint. I believe the equality of men and women because I believe there is no free will, there is no free choice, we're doing what we can at any given instance.

A is definitely the best person, because he is a he, and he cheats on his wife, but she's not only his wife, she's polyandrous, since the original post said that the philanthropist cheats on "their" wife. "He" would have sufficed if he was alone her husband; obviously "their" was substituted for the only possible reason of her having more than one husband. Then the cheating already doesn't count to be so sinful, does it.

B is defenitely the best person, because he is giving his lifetime into providing free medical care; he cares about people; he cares about his wife, and that's why he hit her, because he was emotionally aroused and he was hitting her out of anger, not out of hate. If he was indifferent, he would have tortured her or somehow controlled her. But that was not the case, as this was a "domestic" violence issue. He hit her because the soup was over-salted or there was a dustbunny under the bed. The nappies were not evenly ironed. I don't know what counts as domestic thing these days, in this topsy-turvy world, in which values, lifestyles and morals are interchangeable and new ones come up, old ones completely disappear.

B is definitely the best person, because he harms noone. He's probably lying in a coma, since he is incapable of doing good or bad, which is only possible if one does not act at all all year round, and that's only possibl efor a living man if he's in a coma. I mean even flushing a toilet can be good or bad, depending under the circumstances. So how can you condemn a man who's sick and lying in a coma? In fact, there was a woman who lay in one for seventeen years and she was idolized, made into a saint almost.

oops rofl rofl
I MISSED one of her sentences,,,,laugh laugh

The worst,,would be A and B...BOTH...as to C is the BEST...

As A and B both HURT an Innocent one,,,THEY BOTH to me are equal.
as to their Character, in respect to morals and ethic's, THEY BOTH FAILED at having a GOOD JUDGMENT of THEIR'S...
Where as C,,,WE know,,,NOTHING OF THEIR"S....
So morally,,HE COULD BE A SAINT,,
But we cannot judge what we know no facts of,,,,RIGHT?

IMO I would say A and B are equal. Cheating creates emotional pain and domestic abuse is physical pain. Both can be psychologically devastating.

I would have to say B is the worst because while it is morally wrong to cheat on your spouse, that in itself causes no physical harm to anyone. But this also opens up the arguement that emotional harm is actually worse than physical harm but for the sake of arguement I am saying B.
