Kent State was a tragedy that should have never happened, it should have been looked into better than instead of now. However, progress is progress and hopefully those responsible for this horrible event are brought into the light. Further, I wouldn't be surprised if the order was given to shoot.

It doesn't matter if Richard Nixon was standing there ordering them to fire, it would still be an unlawful order. There is no excuse for what happened, either way..

Good find Mshamony!!drinker

catastrophe? They used to call it a massacre. But, times are a'changin'. It now doesn't fit the minimum required dead to qualify for massacre status.

Like what the chinese did in Tienanmen Square is now classed as a unfortunate act.

And, who gave the order to fire? I looked and couldn't find out.

Class, can you say massacre?

The tragedy of Kent State was that students were stupid enough to bring rocks to a gunfight. When they threw rocks at the Guardsmen, the students were assaulting the NG with deadly weapons. Rocks were killing people, and animals, for millions of years before guns were ever invented. Once students assaulted the NG with thir deadly weapons (rocks) the NG was justified in assaulting the students withe their deadly weapons (guns) in self defense. The moral of the story is: "Behave yourself. When a a man with a gun tells you what to do, or not do, you'd better obey...unless you are armed, and want to start a gunfight."

The students were in control of the situation, the students let it get out of hand, and the students asked for what they got.

as a matter of practicality,, I agree, if someone with a gun tells you to do something its wise to do it,,

as a matter of law however,, practicality does not usually supercede law

an officer who is carrying a gun does not have the right to SHOOT you for not obeying him (he can shoot if he believes himself to be in mortal danger,, not because he is pissed that you arent obedient)

as far as the rocks,,it would have been justifiable to fire WARNING shots first, or using gas, or any other number of disperse tactics instead of just shooting directly at real students because SOME in the crowd were unruly
