I just had to ask. I've seen several threads about this tonight and I seem to be the only one confused. I actually thought they were very different.

They are very different. Sex can be intimate, but intimacy isn't always sexual. Sex isn't always intimate as well. I really hate how this site uses intimate encounter to mean just looking for sex. That's so inaccurate

I agree with everyone above. Intimacy does not require sex. In fact, at least to me, sex is meaningless unless intimacy has been established first. Intimacy requires trust, love and communication. That should be present long before sex but in the end sex doesn't require any of that, just genitals and more hormones than intellect (guilty).

Yeah, I agree there. Intimate encounter! Sure, it's more like a 'Horny and sexual encounter. You can't have an intimate encounter unless you have positive feelings, knowledege, and trust of each other.

I just have to say I really love the discussion going on in this thread. Going through life emotionlessly is easy, being truly intimate with someone requires guts.

Sex...I open my legs.
Intimacy...I open my heart.
Huge difference!

They can intertwine though. That intimate soul touching sex is absolutely wonderful. Doesn't happen often enough though.

Couldn't have said it better myself! drinker

Although...I must admit...I have never had #1 without #2 and I'm not sure that I would want to?

Well one of the defintions of intimacy is close or warm friendship or understanding; personal relationship and the second definition is of course sexual. So, I prefer to go with the first definition and that is completely different from sex.

I think they are different. I believe sex is just something that feels good, like scratching an itch, but intimacy is being with someone you love, and sharing your passions in life.
