Do you use them often? Do they bother you?

We have so many used at work that most people don't even know what they stand for anymore.

On a site like this, they're way overused as well. On another thread, I saw someone use "nbd" which I had never even seen used before. laugh

I think people have gotten so lazy that they have to use shortcuts with everything. I have no problem with more well known acronyms, but even then it gets old when they're overused. What do you all think?

When I was in the Air Force, I was seriously addicted to them. They literally had an acronym for everything. I worked for AFTAC, which had office located in the PACAF, and they used TACLAN's to guide the aircraft throughout EURCOM and CONUS.

I've since sworn off them, as I believe they may cause brain cancer.

What does "nbd" mean? next business day?

Sometimes they count.

I try to write things out. They don't bother me, but I prefer not to use them. I did for awhile and then found I was usuing them in everday letters and writings...so I tend to stay away.

Glad to see people starting to realize that writing things out for the most part is better.

Acronyms are symbols, and symbols are for the symbol minded (to borrow a phrase from George Carlin).

No, I'd rather spell things out to make sure people understand completely that I don't know what I'm talking about. No sense making them guess I'm an idiot, it's more polite to let them know. laugh

[clor=brown] I was telling my nine year old cousin Jerrod a joke, and instead of laughing, he goes "LOL". He actually said...."LOL". slaphead

I have heard people use that and other acronyms in real life. It's pretty bad.

The sad thing is that kids these days love to use them. I mean, text speak is just so common for them that they don't seperate texting, acronyms from real life. Have you seen a kid write an essay these days? A lot of them will write down the letter "U" for "You". THAT is sad!

I do see a lot on some of the horror forums I frequent people using acronyms for movie titles, some are easy to figure out- others not so much. So you have about every other post someone asking what does this or that acronym stand for.

I've been seeing more and more of the text talk and acronyms. I prefer to spell most of it out.

The acronyms with the government job I had amused me no end. I always felt like it was some some of STD. We all had NRFU-VDC...

laugh

That's pretty bad if they're actually using these things in real life. But, then again, adults are doing the same thing, which I find just as bad.
