OAK CREEK, Wisconsin(AFP) - US investigators on Monday probed a vicious attack on worshippers at a Sikhtemple in Wisconsin in which a gunman killed at least six people before he wasshot dead by police.
Three men, includinga member of a police unit called to the scene, were reportedto be in a critical condition with gunshot wounds.
The killings were condemned by US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who said he was"deeply shocked and saddened".
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said the probe into the shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, was in its early stages and that no definitive conclusionscould yet be drawn.
"While the FBI is investigating whether this matter might be an act of domestic terrorism, no motive has been determined at this time," Special Agent in Charge Teresa Carlson said in a statement.
Officials speaking on condition of anonymity said tattoos on the body of the slain gunman and certain biographical details have led the FBI to look at the possibilityof domestic terrorism, but more time was needed to make a final determination.
The attack was the second massacre to shock the United States in under three weeks and will boostpressure on Obama and his rival Mitt Romney to address gun control before the November 6 presidential election.
Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards told reporters that officers had responded to a 911 call and raced to the temple, where one ofthem was"ambushed" and shotseveral times before a colleague took down the gunman.
The suspect died, as did six others he had shot in and near the temple. Three men, including the wounded officer, were taken to a Milwaukee hospital, where a medic said they were in "critical condition."
Witnesses described a bloody scene of confusion and terror as the gunman strode into the temple and opened fire as people gathered for Sunday services.
Japal Singh, 29, spoke to several fellow parishioners about what happened and said that while people were still confused, some things were now clear.
A man who dropped his father off at the temple, known to Sikhs as a"gurudwara," said hesaw the shooter -- described as a tall white man with a bald head -- kill two people in the parkinglot.
"Then he went down inside the temple and then went into the room where the holy scripture is kept and basically shot more people there, multiple people there," said Singh, a combat medic in the US Army reserve.
Police did not name the shooter, although they had clearly identified himas local and federal officers soon evacuated three blocks of housing in Cudahy, a suburb justnorth of Oak Creek, while they sealed off his home.
An AFP reporter in Cudahy saw heavily armed officers mounted in the basket on the ladder of a fire truck observing a house from above, while more police cordoned off the neighborhood as a precaution.
Dozens of members of the Sikh community descended on the area after reports of the shooting and were held back behind a police cordon, anxiously scanning their cell phones for news of friends and relatives in the temple.
"Our priest, he's dead. One of my friends' grandfathers,he's dead. It's a very close-knit community. No matter who's hurt, we're all family," Harinder Kaur, a 22-year-old student, told AFP.
Factory worker Navreet Raman, 42, said: "It's terrorizing. It's our worship place. If church is not a safe place, what is? Nothing is safe."
President Obama said he and First LadyMichelle Obama had been "deeply saddened" to learn ofthe shooting, and Romney sent his condolences.
"As we mourn this loss which took placeat a house of worship, we are reminded how much our country has beenenriched by Sikhs, who are a part of ourbroader American family," Obama said in a statement.
In New Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, himself a Sikh, said: "That this senseless act of violence should be targeted at a place ofreligious worship is particularly painful."
The president of the temple, Satwant Kaleka, was shot and was taken to a hospital, according toThe Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which said the large place of worship had been founded in 1999.
According to religious tradition, Sikh Indians wear turbans to cover their uncut hair and sport long beards. There are reportedly between 500,000 and700,000 Sikhs now living in the United States.
In the United States they have often beenmistaken for Muslimsand have been targeted by anti-Islam activists, particularly after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the UnitedStates.
Sapreet Kaur, executive director of the Sikh Coalition, which represents the community in the United States, said police should be allowed to investigate but that he suspected a hate crime had taken place.
"There have been multiple hate crime shootings within the Sikh community in recent years and the natural impulse of our community is to unfortunately assume the same in this case," he said.
Sunday's shooting also bore some similarities to a March 2005 incident in nearby Brookfield, Wisconsin that saw a gunman kill seven worshippers at a church service at a hotel, before turning the gun on himself. Last month, a gunman burst into a movie theater showing the new Batman film in Aurora, a suburb of Denver, Colorado, and opened fire, killing 12 people and wounding dozens more.

You noticed the key phrases:

"In the United States they have often been mistaken for Muslims and have been targeted by anti-Islam activists, particularly after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States."

and

"Since 9/11, there have been more than 700 reports of hate-related incidents against Sikhs in the United States, according to the Associated Press. "Sikhs don't practice the same religion as Muslims," the AP noted, "but their long beards and turbans often cause them to be mistaken for Muslims, advocates say."

Muslims and Sikhs actually don't like each other in the Middle East. But you will not see violence between them here in America because here they are free to practice their religions separately.

However, this STILL does not give ignoramuses permission to kill innocent people of either religion just because they think they are terrorists. I am Muslim and I have NO DESIRE to blow up anyone or cause terror. My Muslim community here is working with the non-Muslim community to stop this gross misinformation about Islam because, frankly, we are getting tired of being blamed for one man's actions and one extremism sect's behavior. Those people are not Muslims. Even us Muslims know that. Why hasn't anyone else realized that? There are over 2.1 billion Muslims in the entire world. And exactly how many people are being blown up? There are enough Muslims to wipe out a good chunk of Christians and become the #1 religion, but we choose not to. Why? Because that is not what is said to be done in the Qur'an or Sunnah. Why I reverted to Islam? Because of the peace and love I found in the religion and in the Qur'an. I spent 10 years researching Islam. Never did I once read 9/11 in the Qur'an or Sunnah.

Try reading the Bible again. I found more violence in the Bible than I ever did in the Qur'an. And I would know, my mother is a former Roman Catholic Nun.

it takes a person to interpret their holy book as a license to kill to become a terrrorist

and it takes a person with murder in their heart to take out scores of people at a church or theater

it starts with the person,,,education is key

I am not of the belief anyone can or will try to 'ban' guns, but that is a far stretch from at least regulating them,,,there is just no LOGICAL LEGAL purpose for any weapon that can do that type of mass damage in a matter of seconds,,,,,

Muslims are killing thousands daily.
Particularly Christians. Then, they kill those who won't convert.
And one nutcase makes national news.

How many Christians have killed Muslims in the last month? I would dare bet Muslims would be found guilty of more atrocities.

Let us clarify some things here. Islam is a violent religion based on power, domination, and ignorance.

The Sikh faith is based on trust, learning, and discipline.

BOTH are monotheistic but Sikhs preach tolerance towards others, and like Islam their turban and beards are symbols of their faith much like Amish, hard core Christians, Judea and other faiths that prevent the shaving of beards and the growing of hair. BUT THE TURBAN A SIKH WEARS IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM THE TURBANS WORN IN ISLAM! Likewise Sikh comes from INDIA and is 500 years old. Look all of this up on Wikipedia!

The shooter was a white skin head.

This man was a lone wolf killer. This smacked of something Islamics would do but I wanted facts before finger pointing.

There was no way to see this coming and he SLAUGHTERED a cop. The local police took him down like a rabid dog!

I really have to feel for the Sikhs. They are badly maligned and Wade Michael Page will go down in history as a scum sucking bastard who embarrassed his own race!

I chose to fight Islam with words. Islamic people are misguided. Islamic people can learn there is another way to heaven and it does not involve blind obedience! Sikhs are not. They area religion of peace and their doors are open to others not of their faith. If I were to set foot in a Mosque especially to challenge the ideals of Islam they would throw me out. It is a commandment of the Quran and Islam to not let ANY infidels into their Mosques! I can walk over to any Sikh temple and eat lunch with them and discuss their faith and even question it without them shoving their beliefs down my throat on the "This is how it is because our bible tells us so so don't question it or we will teach you respect."

This really illustrates the lack of understanding this world has. I am not going to get into a huge argument here over Islam and this and that. The issue here was the Sikh temple shooting and these are the facts.

The killer was white, He WAS a Neo-Nazi. He acted alone. And people have to clean up after this mess. Worst is this jerk probably assumed he was storming a Mosque. A police officer was gunned down mercilessly. Children were killed. And America will make MORE laws instead of trying to get on track with the things we need fixed in this nation.

I am absolutely baffled people have access to the Internet and they still have no clue what a Sikh is all about. To us they just look like Muslims! Why are Americans so damn clueless?

The gunman who killed six people at a Wisconsin Sikh temple was a 40-year-old U.S. Army veteran and authorities said they were investigating possible links to white supremacist groups and his membership in a skinhead rock band.
The assailant, who was shot dead by police at the scene on Sunday, was named Wade Michael Page, a former U.S. soldier who served from 1992 to 1998, according to John Edwards, the police chief of Oak Creek, a suburb of Milwaukee and home to the 400-member temple.
Page killed six people and seriously wounded three, including a police officer, at theSikh Temple of Wisconsin as worshippers prepared for religious services.
The victims were five men and one woman, aged between 39 and 84.Members of the Sikh community said the president of the congregationand a priest were among the victims.
Authorities said they were treating the attack as a possible act of domestic terrorism.American Sikhs saidthey have often been singled out for harassment, andoccasionally violent assault, since the September 11, 2001, attacks because they are mistaken as Muslims due to their colorful turbans and beards.
"The definition of domestic terrorism is the use of force or violence for social or political gain, so that's obviously what we're looking at," FBI special agent Teresa Carlson said at a news conference on Monday, adding that authorities were looking at Page's ties to whitesupremacists.
U.S. military sourcessaid Page had been discharged from the Army in 1998 for "patterns of misconduct" and had been cited for being drunk on duty.
Page had served in the military for six years but was neverposted overseas. Hewas a psychologicaloperations specialist and missile repairman who was last stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the sources said.
In June 1998 he was disciplined for being drunk on duty and had his rank reduced to specialist from sergeant. He was not eligible to re-enlist.
Page had been a member of the skinhead band End Apathy, based in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 2010, said Heidi Beirich, director of the intelligence project at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in Montgomery, Alabama.
He also tried to buy goods from the National Alliance, a neo-Nazi group, in 2000, she said. The SPLC describes the National Alliance onits website as"perhaps the most dangerous and bestorganized neo-Naziformation in America."

Then why is the mosque here catering a dinner to all non-Muslims and inviting them into the mosque for dinner tonight as a part of the Ramadan celebration? I mean, if it is against our religion and its in the Qur'an, then why are the Muslims of Wichita disobeying the Qur'an and our God by allowing this to happen???

What is this world coming to when a Muslim can't invite a non-Muslim to a catered dinner? The shame and atrocity!

Your not answering my question tells me I am right about muslims killing off non-muslims.
Muslims are taught to use kindness and lies to gather converts.
When kindness quits working they use intimidation, then violence.
In the end it is, convert or die

Just don't DARE question anything the Quran says, Right? "So if I ask WHY IS IT JUSTIFIABLE TO LIE TO ANYONE JUST BECAUSE MUHAMMAD SAYS SO?" I would not be rebuked?

Next...

The infidels are unclean; do not let them into a mosque (9:28)

Likewise if I ask, "Why is it right to wage war on others who do not agree with your view of God," I would not be lied to and told that the jihad is a Metaphor...

Kill the Jews and the Christians if they do not convert to Islam or refuse to pay Jizya tax (9:29)

And of course I would be called Godless if I told them that I do not worship or obey any scripture including Islam's because they are all false than I would not be called an infidel?

Islam lies to everyone. If the Curiosity Rover finds that Mars at one time did harbor life what of your faith then in a lie?

Much like a cell in our bodies cannot speak for the real you so we and I mean NONE OF US Can speak for God.

How can a faith that commands people to lie, cheat, steal, and murder a neighbor be called peaceful or enlightened? I read a Quran. I read a Bible. The bible is rife with Pedophilia, murder, sodomy, and acts of Hypocrisy so great I question what a Church of any kind KNOWS ABOUT LOVE! At least the Sikhs are not out to harm me and I know that. So far every time I question Islam deeply about its core philosophies I get nothing but hostility.

How about I show up at YOUR mosque and ask your Imam the HARD questions? How would he take it when I ask him if a religion that commands the faithful to lie not only to its own but to its neighbors not in itself be a lie?

PLEASE! 6 YEARS OF LUTHERAN GRADE SCHOOL WHERE I WAS TAUGHT THE BIBLE IN VERY DEEP DETAIL, BUT THEN 3 1/2 YEARS OF CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL OPENED MY EYES TO THE REAL LIES OF THE CHURCH! I know how to read very well and the Quran is essentially the Middle East's version of Mein Kamph.

I am not trying to be mean. I am trying to get people who are being deceived into a false belief to open their eyes for a change and stop letting themselves live a lie or allow others to lie to them. Like I say, there are MANY paths and at least of ALL the religions Buddhists and Sikhs get the idea of tolerance and brotherhood better than anyone else! But here I am still refusing to accept religion any more and why? I CAN FACE THE UNKNOWN BY ACKNOWLEDGING THAT I DON'T KNOW! ANYONE ELSE CLAIMING TO KNOW WHAT GOD WANTS OR SAYS IS LING THROUGH THEIR TEETH TO USE YOU FOR THEIR POWER GAMES!

And comparing acts of Violence? Howe about that little march across the Arabian Peninsula of Muhammads where several cities that didn't bow to him were burned to the ground and all the people down to the children burned? So what makes it right for a holy figure to marry a girl of 6 YEARS OLD, and take her virginity at 9? Alisha was not even bleeding yet when Muhammad popped her. Is that what you would want of your own daughter? To be bought as property and used like a sperm bucket at such an early age? I read a Quran and I sure in the heck did not see anything about real love or compassion. Moral truth wrapped up in lies and deceptiveness is not good! Likewise the logic of both Bible and Quran ARE FALLACIOUS TO THE EXTREME!
