An NYPD officer shoots a pit bull as it lunges at him. The dog was standing by its owner, a homeless man who had passed out on the pavement. Witnesses say the owner appeared to be suffering a seizure. Contrary to early reports saying the dog died, the pit bull, named Star, is alive, but in a serious condition.

It's easy to say that now and not in the officers position. The thing is I'm sure they are just like everyone and look forward to going home after a day of work. After watching the video, I would have made the same decision as the officer. The dog was a threat, he eliminated the threat. |

Humm if I was in the same position and someone was in need of medical help and a dog lunges at me. I'm gonna save my *** first then the one on the ground.
I'm a dog lover would never hurt one unless it came at me first, same thing I would do with a human...

Most likely it was, when a dog lunges at you it is protecting someone, sick or wild. There was a very good chance the dog was protecting his owner and would do what it had to too keep you away. Now with that thought would you take a chance if a something or someone was lunging at you snarling? Or take action and hope you can keep from being tore up. The cop had no idea what would happen if that dog had got him.
Pit bull has a death grip....one of the hardest one to get away from and a bad rep. |

From what I saw in the vid, it was a justified shooting.
Why was the dog not on a leash inside city limits? Is there not a leash law there? |

Don't get me wrong...i'm sure the officer did what he thought was the best thing to do, as was the dog trying to protect its pack by doing only what it knows how to do.
And that is the difference. The dog doesn't have the luxury of choice. |

Cops are not the brightest people on the planet, anyone with any sense of reason would understand that the dog knows something is wrong with its human but not sure exactly and is protecting his human. Police need to be trained in dog behavior before they go out on the town jacked up on speed with loaded guns ready to pull they gat and squeeze a few off cause the wind changed direction. |

Yeah, all he had to do was tell the dog he was there to help, the dog would have understood.
