I'm sure this question has been flung around these forums since the site's inception, but I'm new and I didn't see it in the first couple of pages so I'll just go ahead and ask again.
My "first date" experiences haven't always been the greatest. Usually if I survive that first encounter I do much better afterwards. Trying to come up with a good first date can be really hard for a guy who knows only a little to nothing about you. So for all you women out there, what would your ideal first date be? And please be honest!

I don't understand the "Please be honest" bit. Why wouldn't they be honest? It really depends, as there's different types in this world.

I like a first date to be something with NO pressure at all. I don't like to go to dinner or to a movie...I am more of meeting like at a coffee house. A coffee house is laid back, you can actually hear each other and then if either one of you decide that you don't like the other person, you don't have to spend a lot of time together!!

I just want to have a nice time. No pressure (of course both people will be feeling pressure, but keep it to yourselves), just a little bit of get-to-know-you.

I guess Unsure beat me to this.

I used to think a movie was a good idea, but you really can't get to know a person at all that way, so it's probably better for a second date. The first date is for seeing if you actually even enjoy the other person's company.

Really??...i would take the initiative if he appears to be somewhat unsure of what to do. So, i will please myself and grab some noodles from somewhere for us to munch on down by the beach....and take it from there. Perhaps go for a drive and stop at some funky little country pub for a meal and a couple of cold ones...check out the history of the place...impromptu can be a wonderful thing sometimes.

First dates should be low key and easy going. A meal is best. Picnics are nice.

Thanks for the tips!
The reason why I asked for honesty is because girls will say that they like cheap dates all the time but when I do make it cheap, like a picnic or walk in the park, I don't get nearly the positive reaction as I usually do when I put down some money. From my experience, it seems that a cheap date tells girls I'm cheap, while monetary dates shows her I can provide the bacon, so to speak.

Hmm, I guess you are right about that, especially if you are trying to really impress her. I think maybe it all depends on what she is looking for... Kind of hard to say for all women - we are all so different. Maybe try to figure out what she is looking for... I know I want to get married and have a family, so I can say a cheap date will make me think he isn't serious, just there to have fun. However, I will be impressed by a well thought through date, if he was creative. That makes me see he put in some extra effort. That will be hard to ignore!

Yeah. The whole money thing can be a bit annoying :( Either you will look too rich or too cheap. What are we to do? I guess we should find a fine line between the two, and settle for neither :)

Dinner is always good. Depends on what you both like, maybe a comedy show etc.

Yeah I'm not too sure about a stroll at the park.

I think what would worry me more, is whether he is okay in the upstairs department. laugh. Well just to make sure he ain't an axe murderer or something. Comedy Nights sound good. At least you'd be laughing non-stop. Well, hopefully :)

Surely a first date should be short and sweet, you are meeting to take a look at each other to see if you are still interested in the person you have been chatting with.
Arranging to meet to have a coffee keeps things short, simple and inexpensive, if you want to make a big monetary impression save it for a second date if there is to be one. That is just my opinion.

Meeting at a coffeehouse or at a restaurant at the bar to have a drink. This way the meeting can be short and sweet or longer depending how well the chat goes. I prefer to "Go Dutch", this way there are no false expectations, that I owe something.

Why are you just aiming to survive a first date encounter? Why not start by asking your date to help you plan the first date? Then spend the time getting to know her a bit?

It's all going to depend on the women you're dating. For me, him spending a lot of money on a first date is a sign that he's trying too hard. It puts too much pressure on the date. I'd rather keep it simple. Grab drinks at a local bar and listen to music. Go to a museum. Find something we would both enjoy. Do something where you can actually talk, rather than a movie or anything like that.
