I'm glad at least you can see it! After talking to a lot of the posters on here, I'm getting the impression that most Americans have Stockholm Syndrome. How do we provide psychotherapy to 27% of your nation?

At the very least, maybe they'll be able to see the REAL agenda behind the proposed gun bans; obviously they aren't to make the people safer; it's to make the government safer from the people.

I agree, freedom no longer exists for American now, if only ALL of America would wake up and stop sleeping and realize the damage the gov. has caused and what they will continue to do we could then organize our very own plan to avoid this destruction...after all i wouldnt mind i mean i am a renegade. But theres no use, everyone will just imply that we are mentally insane. Haha hypnotized people...I have shame for the people who are asleep and the beings in my generation, all distracted with music and clothes and drugs, alcohol and partying its all nonsense and stupidity. God should they be ashamed but anywho im not to judge and may i be forgiven.

freedom is a myth when one lives as part of a 'community'

we are a constitutional republic, which means we all must adhere to certain laws and responsibilities,,,

we can really only compare 'freedoms' with other countries, but as a measure in itself, there is no way for a community to have it in any absolute sense,,,

lets remember, although white males were essentially 'free' (with the exception of indentured servants and briefly, slaves), plenty of others in america took much longer to win that same level of 'freedom'

timeline of 'america' (since its founding and not including the period between settling geographically and making it official)

founded 1776
oppression of women legally ended with 19th amendment in 1919
oppression of blacks legally ended with voting rights act in 1965
18 year olds 'free' to have a political voice with 26th amdnement in 1971

so, depending upon how one is going to define 'free' when it comes to life and politics,,, there is no freer time than now for us ALL to go back to

this is the freest we have ALL been in americas history,, although some may feel less free because of the freedoms others have gained,,,

Total BS.....we far LESS free as a whole than we were in the past. Do certain people or sects of our culture have more rights than in the past? Yes I can't argue that, but it doesn't change the fact that we have far less collective rights now than we used to. And as long as people hold the attitude you do, they will get lesser and lesser. People have not one idea what they are in for, nor what they have permitted.

America used to be a free country. Sadly it's not anymore.

America is said to be the Most free country and that is why, so many are turning it into a not so free country. Too free is not necessarily a good thing, as we see everyday more and more.

America is free as those freedoms which are outlined in the Bill of Rights and the Declaration. Freedom from Tyranny and, freedom from religious persecution -the reason many early settlers came here - Other freedoms include freedom of conscience - we may believe and think what we will, speech, assembly....an so on

but with freedom always comes responsibility. We are a country ruled by law (not religion, not by a person). The law protects individual civil rights. So no, we can't be free to do whatever we please because we cannot infringe on others rights. The rule of law outlines our freedoms and individual protections.

This is the hardest thing for many non westerners to grasp is rule of law versus rule of the whim of whomever happens to be in power.

It is not a perfect system, and are freedoms are sometimes eroded more than we wish, but we live in a free society because we have legal protections from tyranny - we have to obey the law as best we can - within that legal framework we are free. The legal framework provides a good deal more protection for the individual than it does erode freedom. For example - it will protect minority opinion in the face of the masses which is often a really really good thing.

Dear G-d; it's worse than I thought! I see Newspeak has already replaced American English in your country.

"Too free is not necessarily a good thing…"…Said Massa as he put the collar on the young slave; "…you could wander off the Plantation where I couldn't take good care of you."

The legal framework provides a good deal more protection for the individual than it does erode freedom. For example - it will protect minority opinion in the face of the masses which is often a really really good thing.

EVERYTHING Hitler did was PERFECTLY LEGAL, and the German people were happy to oblige him. Legal frameworks provide NO PROTECTION from tyranny, only PEOPLE can do that; if they fail in that duty to protect their fellows' rights, then they well deserve to live under the tyranny they themselves helped create with their decadent apathy.

I'm afraid your nation died a long time ago. All that's left is a legal framework called a country. If you had killed the Country to save the Nation, the US would be the greatest place on Earth. Unfortunately, you killed the Nation to save the Country and now that legal framework owns the people. If you don't know the difference between a nation and a country, then forget I said anything & go back to your TV…I think American Idol is on.

which 'collective' rights do you refer to,, exactly

how do you measure 'more or less' free from one period in america to the next?

its strange that people only recently started holding the attitude you do about their 'freedom' being 'collectively' less, and not so much when the 'collective' involved was a much smaller demograhic of human beings in america

we have gained and lost , and we will continue to,,,that is the history of any country,,,

I have not and would not 'permit' anything that I felt was unfair or unjust or undue(I do hold the believe that 'appreciation' is as important as fear and entitlement and that there should be some EXPECTATIONS to live in a country that is supposedly FREE, to keep it running in an orderly and just manner for the LARGE population it is home to)

Freedom quite simply is having the ability to do anything and I mean ANYTHING involving yourself or the consent of another person with yourself, without someone telling you cannot do it, provided you are not stepping on another's right to do the same in the process. Anything less than that is not freedom at all.

If you seriously think given that, that we are more free today than we were in the past, you don't know what it truly means to be, because with every new law passed, we lose more and more of those personal freedoms in the process, and the government gets more say over what we can or cannot do. That's not perception, that's not rhetoric or opinion, that's fact.

If you seriously think given that, that we are more free today than we were in the past, you don't know what it truly means to be.

seriously,, it depends upon what 'we' you refer to

you do realize , up until 1969, blacks were not 'free' to do many t hings others have been allowed to do since the countrys founding?

so how are blacks now 'less free' than they were in the past?

how do you measure that so definitively and absolutely with a straight face?

and 'freedom' isnt equated by whether someones right to do the 'same' is stepped on

its whether ANY OF THEIR rights are stepped on in the process,,,

and then there is that pesky old debate of defining what things are actually 'rights',,,other than the very vague

life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness described in our declaration of independence

or does the constitution usurp the 'rights' as defined by that document?

it seems like things happen to minorities (point of reference: minority is not a race and does not refer to race) throughout history in this country and thats not qualified as the least 'free' times, indeed the majority believe those times to be grand and quite 'free' for them,

but let restraints or laws affect the demographic of the majority and its the end of the world

well, at least people here dont go taking their life over it as so many other in the majority do when things start taking a turn they felt 'entitled' not to experience,,,
