CHICAGO — A bloody weekend in Chicago left at least 22 people shot and four dead in incidents from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening.

On Sunday afternoon, five people were shot, including a 17-year-old boy, who was wounded in the 1500 block of South Millard Avenue. He was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. Three people were critically wounded in a shooting in Grand Crossing, and another in the Oakland neighborhood.

At least six people were shot between Saturday and Sunday morning.

A 28-year-old man, identified as Larry Randle, of the 1200 block of West 97th Street, was killed near his home about 1 p.m. Saturday, Chicago Police said.

Police said Randle was walking when a light-colored vehicle pulled up, and two men got out and fired shots, hitting him in the back. Randle was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park in critical condition and pronounced dead at 1:35 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

A 19-year-old man was shot in the right leg about 2:25 a.m. Sunday as he stood in an alley in the 1000 block of North Monticello Avenue in West Humboldt Park, Officer John Mirabelli, a Chicago Police spokesman said said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Further south, a man was shot in the leg about 2:50 a.m. near West 51st Street and South Central Avenue in Garfield Ridge, Mirabelli said. That victim was taken to an unknown hospital while a second person, whose age and gender were unknown, showed up at Holy Cross Hospital with an arm wound, Mirabelli said.

A 22-year-old man walked to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand after a shooting near Cicero Avenue and Madison Street in Austin about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Mirabelli said.

A man was found shot at a scene after reports of gunfire in the 5700 block of West Grand Avenue in Belmont Cragin about 5:10 a.m. Sunday, Mirabelli said. That victim is in stable condition, though it is unknown to which hospital he was sent.

Those shootings followed shootings citywide Friday night and early Saturday morning that tallied nine victims, including one shot by police. Three of those shot died.

A 17-year-old standing in an alley in the 900 block of West 95th Street in Brainerd was shot in his upper left chest about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, Mirabelli said.

In Chatham, Donte J. Kenney, 26, has been charged with aggravated assault of a police officer in connection with a Saturday morning shooting in which he was sent to Christ Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

About 1 a.m. Saturday, officers on patrol smelled marijuana and saw Kenney standing at the mouth of an alley in the 8500 block of South Rhodes Avenue, according to a police statement and Pat Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

When the officers got out of their squad car to investigate, Kenney ran down the alley and into the backyard of a nearby residence. When the officers followed him into the backyard, he pointed a weapon in their direction, prompting one of the officers to shoot him, according to police.

Police recovered a gun at the scene, Camden said.

About two hours earlier, a man was shot and killed in South Chicago, authorities said, after fighting with another man.

The two began fighting outdoors in the 8700 block of South Burley Avenue at about 11:10 p.m. Friday, and the 34-year-old man was shot repeatedly in the chest, according to Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman.

The slain man, later identified as Kevin Sanders, was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital where he was pronounced dead at midnight, according to the morgue.

The man who killed Sanders was shot in the leg during the altercation and was taken to Trinity Hospital, Greer said. He is in custody, Greer said.

Hours later, another man was shot to death in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said.

About 2:45 a.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old man was standing with two friends on a sidewalk in the 3300 block of West Beach Avenue when two men emerged from a nearby gangway and opened fire on the group, Greer said.

The 19-year-old, identified as Jonathan Santiago of the 900 block of North Homan Avenue, was shot in the chest and was found unresponsive on the scene when police arrived. Police have deemed a shooting a homicide, Greer said.

About the same time as the Humboldt Park shooting, three people were shot on the city's Northwest Side.

Two men and a woman were shot while in a car stopped at a red light in the 4200 block of West Irving Park Road. A light sedan pulled up next to them, a man got out and began firing, Greer said.

Miguel Cancel, 19, of the 5500 block of North Parkside Avenue, was shot in the head and the right shoulder and later died of his injuries at Stroger Hospital.

A 22-year-old man who was shot in both thighs was stable at Stroger Hospital as of early Saturday morning, Greer said.

The third person in the car, a 19-year-old woman, was shot in the right arm and taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where her condition stabilized, Greer said.

Police said two of the people shot are documented gang members, and the shooting appears to be gang-motivated.

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, a man was shot in the 1600 block of North Humboldt Boulevard, police said. The man was shot in the lower left hip and taken to St. Mary Medical Center, according to Officer Michael Sullivan, a police spokesman.

Sullivan said the man's condition had stabilized early Saturday.

A 31-year-old man was in stable condition at Stroger Hospital after being shot in the back about 3:35 a.m. Saturday in Auburn Gresham. He was standing in the 8000 block of South Union Avenue when another man approached him and began firing shots, police spokeswoman Greer said.

At about 2 p.m. Friday afternoon, three people walked into the University of Chicago Hospital with gunshot wounds.

With the exception of Sanders' death, no one was in custody in connection with any of the shootings, police said.

Because Guncontrol works so great in Chi-Town!

concealed carry ban was struck down at the end of 2012 in illinois

and other illinois towns, like bartlett are at the other extreme with gun violence rates,,

so perhaps there is some other factos that can be focused on to explain the chi town culture,,,

democrats don't care, they just want to tell everyone what to do...
think all the gang members gave up any guns there?
now, the honest people are left at the mercy of gangsters and police...pretty close to one and the same....

you really think that some random guy that is living in a gang infested neighborhood is going to pull out a concealed weapon and shoot at the gangbangers? please

the police are reactive and do little good.. plus it isn't like the police and the black community trust each other..

Chicago has their own laws that go beyond the state of Illinois. They are regarded as the strictest in the nation.

Yet, they lead the nation in murders.

Something is wrong in Chicago and communities are being left at the mercy of those with illegal firearms.

Strictest gun control.. Highest murder rate..

That doesn't jive..

Chicago may not have the highest murder rate in the USA. However, its strict gun-control laws definitely haven't prevented Chicago from having the high murder rate that it does have.

Chicago had the highest total number of murders in 2012 and since 2008 over 80% of the murdered that are 21 or younger are black or latino.

they make up 33% of the total population.

restricting lawful firearm purchases isn't Chicago's problem.. that is obvious..

In Chicago, the police are brutal and dishonest. It is a police state.

Its no wonder there is so much violence there.

Human beings don't like living under tyranny. Chicago is the worse place to live and the police are tyrants. They are not there to protect you.

People mostly fear the police there.

Msharmony, according to the scientific method, you are wrong. If gun control works in one city, it should work the same in all of them.

If it does not work in one city, it will not work in other cities.

But people pushing gun control want you to believe otherwise and they ignore the facts.

You have to look at the real statistics. Gun control and a police state does not reduce violence or crime.

thats is true, its only a band aid , there are bigger issues

coincidentally, the incidence of poverty amongst blacks and latinos is 5 times as high as that of non black and latino in chicago as well,,,

economy and crime are part of a vicious circle that could stand a closer look,,,,,

thats not true at all

scientific methods would compare similar conditions and situations,,

for instance, a birth control pill may work for some women and not all women

it may work for women and not for men

all cities and states do not have all the same veriables for the outcome to be expected to be identical everytime

But on the average, gun control, and a police state will not reduce violent crime.

think all the gang members gave up any guns there?
now, the honest people are left at the mercy of gangsters and police...pretty close to one and the same....

honest people still have police working for them and are still able to own guns,,,,and now conceal and carry them too...

you really think that some random guy that is living in a gang infested neighborhood is going to pull out a concealed weapon and shoot at the gangbangers? please

the police are reactive and do little good.. plus it isn't like the police and the black community trust each other..

gang infested neighborhoods are another issue,,,I was refuting the idea that anyone is being 'left at the mercy' of anyone else by gun laws in Illinois

However, its strict gun-control laws definitely haven't prevented Chicago from having the high murder rate that it does have.

nothing is fool proof,,,,nothing works everywhere in every circumstance,,,

Msharmony, according to the scientific method, you are wrong. If gun control works in one city, it should work the same in all of them.

If it does not work in one city, it will not work in other cities.

But people pushing gun control want you to believe otherwise and they ignore the facts.

You have to look at the real statistics. Gun control and a police state does not reduce violence or crime.

thats not true at all

scientific methods would compare similar conditions and situations,,

for instance, a birth control pill may work for some women and not all women

it may work for women and not for men

all cities and states do not have all the same veriables for the outcome to be expected to be identical everytime

I did not say results were identical.

You have to look at percentages and statistics.

But on the average, gun control, and a police state will not reduce violent crime.

no, not alone they wont, neither will gun access and legality,,,

there are more factors that are at play from region to region and community to community,,,

I disagree.

In Alabama, it is very easy to get a concealed weapons permit and the crime rate is very low there.

I'm sure there are many more examples of this strange statistic.

no, not alone they wont,

By the way... what do you mean by ... "not alone they won't"

So what other kind of big brother control would you suggest be added to gun control and a police state?

In this country there is not much difference between one region and another or one community or another.

I have lived in many cities, and they are all basically very similar.

there is plenty of difference from region to region, the source of a communities revenue, (gambling, agriculture, hospitality,,etc,,), the income distribution (wealth and assets and not just earned income), the demographics of age, educational attainment, quality of education, employment opportunity,,,etc,,,,,,these things vary GREATLY from region to region and community to community

Notice that most of these shootings happened late night? These thugs don't give a dam about any type of gun control. Pass all the laws you want and they will still have guns. While the law abiding citizens having guns for protection, will have them taken from them.
