Hundreds of Muslim workers fired after dispute over prayers

FORT MORGAN, Colo. -- Nearly 200 Muslim workers have been fired from a Cargill meatpacking plant in Colorado, for walking out after a dispute over prayer breaks.

Praying five times a day is a must for many Muslims.

But Tony Aden says missing even one of those prayers over a break time dispute caused him and many others to walk away from their jobs.

"It don't matter if I don't have a job, my religion is more important," Aden told CBS News.

Cargill spokesperson Michael Martin says prayer is allowed. But he says a misunderstanding of company policy came on December 18th, when 11 workers asked for a break to pray at the same time.

"Coming from that specific work area would have disrupted the workflow so the supervisor told the employees that they could go pray, but they would have to go in smaller numbers than 11," Martin told CBS News. "It would have to be three at a time."

The following Monday, nearly 200 employees from the Muslim community didn't show up to work for three consecutive days. The company fired them all.

"There are times when accommodation is not possible," Martin said. "But in an overwhelming majority of instances, we do everything we can to ensure sure that we do accommodate employees."

Jaylani Hussein represents 150 workers who are now without a job.

"Now we are getting supervisors who are telling our clients to go home if they wanted to pray," Hussein said. "If they are denied their basic rights to practice their faith reasonably at their employment, they seem to be losing one of the basic fundamental rights."

Cargill is now hiring to fill the shoes of those who walked out.

Areas have been set up at Cargill since 2009 to accommodate anyone who requested time to pray.

The Council on American Islamic Relations is currently working reach an agreement with Cargill so that those fired workers can return.

Okay..all Jews & Christians refuse to work on Shabbat/ Sabbath (Friday at sundown to Saturday sundown), then when they complain.. Stay home for 3 days & someone will come fight for your 'fundamental rights to pray"

Since when did "nearly 200" become "hundreds" ?
Many of them walked away from their jobs, to me this implies they quit,therefore were not fired.

I read it slowly and then I quickly re read.
The numbers are still the same.At no point did the figures reach 200..

Just shows Islam and western culture don't mix. They should return to where they can pray 5 times a day and live in mud huts.

Islam – as practiced today by millions of followers – is wholly incompatible with Western democracies.

It’s a “theological, political problem” that will pose a dangerous and increasing threat in the very near future, says a political scientist at Hillsdale College.

Professor Matthew Spalding said his professional mission is to remind Americans of their country’s “noble founding principles” and what makes America “exceptional.”

The focus that liberals have of “multiculturalism,” “tolerance” and eroding traditional notions of marriage and the family have put us at a crossroads, he said in a lengthy interview with The Daily Caller’s Ginni Thomas.


Muslims do not tolerate the religious liberties of others, a belief that is antithetical to American values, Spalding said. A shockingly large number of American Muslims believe sharia law should be the law of the land in the U.S. and that violence against “those who offend the prophet Mohammad” is legitimate.

The choice we face is between a limited constitutional government that grants maximum liberty and opportunity to the people, Spalding says, allowing civil society to flourish apart from government, or a burgeoning active, modern administrative state that is sold as “progress” but is non-responsive to anyone but the political elites.

Interviewed in mid-December at Hillsdale’s Kirby Center in Washington, D.C., Spalding fears too many citizens are unfamiliar with what has set America apart and the stakes of this political battle.


Asked for the best criteria he would suggest for citizens to choose a new statesman for president in 2016, Spalding named two. He says the next leader should understand the nature of the crisis America is facing, and be able to lay out solutions and strategies for addressing that crisis. Spalding calls for a national dialogue on who we are, where we are going and how we will alter the course America is on.

Hillsdale College, which refuses federal subsidies because of unwanted federal interference, has been keenly aware of progressive meddling and government control of education. Spalding speaks of the elites as similar to a science fiction “blob” that won’t stop until it controls higher education, K-12 and now pre-school — reminding us that progressives since John Dewey have worked to control the formation of citizens.

With progressives now dominating our government and culture, Spalding believes in hindsight that the definitive cultural indicator progressives won was the erosion and collapse of traditional marriage and family. Progressives have been jealous of the power of families and religion, making them a longtime target of those who wish to have the government the arbiter of all rights, he says.

In this 29-minute exclusive video interview for The Daily Caller News Foundation, Spalding says — despite the name calling by the left — it is they who are pulling us back to a dark historical time before the American experiment granted rights and opportunities to the citizens, apart from kings and rulers.

He gives low grades to the Republican Congress that continues to grant excessive power to the growing administrative state that writes ever-more prescriptive regulations — regulations that are the proper prerogative of the legislative branch since they are most accountable to the citizens.

Instead, Congress has allowed its muscles to atrophy, Spalding says. The question will be how new leaders in Congress can turn the whole ship to restore the proper separation of powers to our government, he explains.

compromise seems like it would have been a better option if there aren't SET times that the prayer must happen and IF there was no pre employment understanding of exactly what the employee expected and what the employer would oblige

religious accommodation is discretionary for employers based upon the potential hardship, and if there were too many wanting to leave at once and that was EXPLAINED, then their Reaction was over the top

if however, there were too many wanting to leave and they were simply told 'go home if you want to pray',,,than the employers reaction was unprofessional and possibly could have avoided the whole issue by better explaining the reason for denial

furthermore

the plural of a word just means MORE than one, it doesn't even have to be 2

so, more than one hundred, still qualifies to be made plural

Numbers are always rounded off in the USA. If it is 150+ then it is 200.
If it was less than 150 it would say 100 or over 200, in the title.

But this is NOT about the number or the number that got fired. It just appears that way.
