Topic: What makes a nation great?

I have always maintained that this country has the potential to be the greats in the world, but the people that try to run it keep screwing it up. I like to believe that it's our openness and willingness to reach out to those in need even though there are a lot of people here that want to kick out anyone who isn't rich and white and close the door to the rest of the world. I've been to many countries outside of the US and it still bothers me that the one who have never even been over the boarder seem to shout how great we are the loudest.
If I had to pick one thing that showed how great the US is I would have to say the freedom of being able to make up your own mind and be able to speak you own opinion. There are many countries in the world that voicing you opinion leads to public execution, if your lucky.

For citizens to help others, even if you, yourself need help. That is truly a great nation.

Trump will probably just build a wall around the white house and turn it in to a hotel.

What I think makes a nation great is one thing, and what the other people who are chanting about it and cheering politicians on about is think is different most of the time.

I am pretty sure that for example, Trump isn't referring to the heady days of post world war 2, when the United States went around the world rescuing those in need, and challenging persecutions in many places.

I think what too many people yearn for, is a time where the United States is so feared, especially militarily, that we can march in to other peoples' countries and tell them ow to live.

I'd like to see the US become a nation which actually cares about achieving the best for 100% of it's own citizens. No sign anyone else in power believes that right now. Especially not the leading politicians who do the most talking about American Greatness.

I have heard this, forgive the paraphrasing, that 'the measure
of a nation, is how the most of them treat the least of them.'

Props Technovative! ~

It would appear that Great Topics elicit Great Responses!

Never heard this thought expressed with such elegant simplicity Soufie...
Many Thanks for Sharing that;}

Cultural diversity which respects , recognises and embraces each person as a unique individual ....

Higher education as a means to empower plan and look to the future....

A sense of community which encourages participation and partnership to problem solve and bring about positive change ....

Access to free health care , education and a place to call home as a basic need and right for all . ...

I appreciate the freedoms that we have in the US. In particular when those freedoms are not co-opted and are applied equally.

Compassion and generosity are qualities that I value greatly.

I can envision some of his followers easily being pied-pipered into supporting turning the people's house into a full blown for-profit private gated club.

Simple beautiful concepts that warm the heart of even the most curmudgeon are only “fairy-tales” as long as more than a few believe them to be.

Blondey’s LaLa Land sounds pretty great to me. Where do I apply for citizenship?

A nation's greatness may be measured by the quality of treatment meted out to women in the mundane walks of daily survival.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, " A greatness of a nation is measured by how it treats its weakest members. Ours is a land that welcomes even strangers with kindness and warmth"... yes a few posters have pointed out or eluded to this statement. In fairness, he was referring to his homeland...India. If this statement applies to US....then we still have a long way to go OR have we reached saturation point....just saying...

Absolutely true. Great Britain had its shot at greatness, did very well, but now the "great" is only in the country's title...by today's standard, should'nt they agree to drop that word....falls under "misleading the general population" if you ask me....lol...
