In my opinion, it's how they treat their pets

The way that people treat animal companions can give insight into the character of those people.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, " A greatness of a nation is measured by how it treats its weakest members. Ours is a land that welcomes even strangers with kindness and warmth"... yes a few posters have pointed out or eluded to this statement. In fairness, he was referring to his homeland...India. If this statement applies to US....then we still have a long way to go OR have we reached saturation point....just saying...

Yep, I quoted Gandhi in the thread opener because I respect his wisdom and example. I hold out hope for continued improvement globally in working towards greatness.

there is only one true "great" nation, and that is a nation of small islands on the edge of the European continent

Self proclaimed greatness… what a novel concept.

The USA is the Self proclaimed greatest nation, but the United Kingdom of GREAT Britain and Northern Ireland,is the only one with GREAT in it's title drinks

Absolutely true. Great Britain had its shot at greatness, did very well, but now the "great" is only in the country's title...by today's standard, should'nt they agree to drop that word....falls under "misleading the general population" if you ask me....lol...

the great part is a geographical term, it's not actually anything to with our superior being back in the day lol

Great Britain is a political term to describe England, Scotland and Wales. It is different from The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Island, since United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland as well.

I believe what makes a country great is its people.

Yes. The word "great" has more than one commonly used meaning. In British English, especially in older usages, it translates to "Large," and has nothing to do with evaluation of intrinsic or other superiority.

The current day meaning of "make America great again," is pure political mythology in action. In it's best sense, it refers to a desire many of us have, to feel again that the United States and it's citizens, actively stands for the best of human endeavor and represents the highest ideals. In it's worst sense, it refers to wanting the rest of the world to fear, or at least respect us enough, that they will reshape their own goals and policies to cater to us, even setting aside the wishes of their own people, for the sake of appeasing us.

It is the mix of those two together, which makes this particular political time so dangerous for us. If those who wish for the positive aspects of greatness, vote in to power, those who wish for the worst aspects, we will tear the nation apart from within, even as we incite global animosity and unleash destructive forces against ourselves.

While my soft center wants to protect the most vulnerable I think the the true measure of a Nations power is that it supports those that are vunerable and those who are self sustaining and are building greatness without mowing down the people and the environment in it's path. To me freedom has to be tempered with dignity for all and true power is not bullying others into submission by force.

Do all of America's citizens and political candidates value the principles that once made this country most revered still exist? Yes but there are some that try to drown them out with self aggrandizing and spewing lies that too many seem to be supporting because they themselves feel trampled and disenfranchised and are trying to create a giant "wake up" to those who are ignoring good laws of the land.

"Great Britain" is a geographical term not a political one. It is an island, not a country or nation.
When it was discovered by the ancient 'Bretons' who came from Brittany,( Bretagne) part of modern day France, they called it Grand Bretagne ( Great Brittany) to distinguish it from their homeland.

I believe there are lots of factors which makes a country great, it's all about opinions :)

Great Britain is probably both a political and a geographical term.

Technically, if you lose the ‘Great,’ Britain only refers to England and Wales.

Lu, I believe that we all intuitively know right and wrong absolutes. Unfortunately there is still much disagreement about how to define what is correct.

Majority of citizens, of a Nation, normally tend to go towards progress, value and other good traits that make a nation great...If this is not happening...greatness is being held hostage....just saying...
