Madness

Pieces of my broken dreams tumble to the beaten path
quietly, hauntingly, hopelessly love slips through an open door,
as if un- touched by the very lives it once held together.

Darkness fills my once bright eyes.
Now, destiny crams herself down my throat.
Only the bitter taste of sorrow survives where there is no light.

Something inside me cries,
what's left of me slowly dies.
Shattered lives fall softly back to their wombs,
and death comes swiftly to those who can not fight.

Great walls construct themselves around a now occupied one person shell,

where I awake,
alone.

At night, the voices and laughter of my fate keep me awake.
I wonder, as I grow weary, how can a heart in pieces,
still beat.

Loneliness eats my will,
misery accompanies me in your stead.

Still I wonder,
In a world full of people, does anyone else know,
we are all just one mistake, one break-up, one death away,
from,

madness

Infinite

My infinite sadness is interrupted
only by,
visits from my memories of you.

Through times passages, my mind,
slips.

I open the curtains,
there is nothing to view.

A Thought

I drift from conversation to conversation,
always alone,
always an outsider.

I drift and drift until, I become an observer,
watching the crowd of souls before me.
Some hiding from their past, some searching for their future.
My vision is blurred.
A salty droplet finds it`s way to the corner of my mouth.
And I think of you.

I see a couple walking through the crowd.
A baby in her stroller eyes wide open, entranced by the new surroundings.
No worries, no hatred, no fears.
The innocence.
I smile and I think of you.

There is an old woman having trouble loading her bags in the trunk of her car.
She is frail but not helpless, she is proud but week.
I impose on her, my help.
She reluctantly accepts but, gratefully gives thanks.
I walk away and I think of you.

When I am busy,
I think of you.
If ever I have a free moment, it is paid to you.
When I feel lost,
I find myself when I think of you.
At the end of the day,
as the sun completes it`s journey.
The leaves dance on a breeze,
a childs laughter is carried across the amber sky.
As the moon takes it`s turn in the heavens and gently distributes it`s warm soft glow.
I think of you.

As If

Open doors
Ties that bind
Silver lining, from
clouds that hide

Cascading showers of love in mind

Better served
with cold defiance

alone alone alone

The main course
skipped to avoid confusion

Bitter sweet as it lay in roses and mint
with red stained hands
Damn these thorns
Damn these gloves that refuse to protect

Pulling from the vine
My hands rain down
Leave me to drown in the blood of our garden

Save me from myself
As if you would

As if I would let you

Timing

My thoughts
are of you this morning
As my feet awkwardly
find the floor
The cold wood underneath
a reminder,
of what waits outside your door

He’ll never forgive you
for this one
She couldn’t hate me
much more
Just friends, I know
we’ll stick to it
We’ve had a lot of practice

One night of passion
A lifetime to fall
Always in different harbors
With other ports of call

Timing is everything

The Distance In Betweem

she’s not alone on most nights
she still wakes up lonely
her pride gets the best of her
strangers the rest of her
sometimes no one wins these fights…

he caught of glimpse of her - last night
just the way he remembered her
she was walking away
like she did that last day
somehow (to him) that just seemed right

she'd find her way back if he could
he’d probably go back if she would
but it’s hard to cross time
when it’s all on the line
they wonder if they should…

they substitute warmth - for love
it’s an end with no means
nothing ever gets settled
just the distance in between - now,
they'll never go back for the good
though it’s still on their minds
and when it’s all on the line
pride pushes them through time

yeah it's so hard to cross time
when you know it’s so lean
nothing ever gets settled
just the distance in between

Tonight

sitting alone at my piano
trying to finish this song
but there’s no melody
to the words i can’t see
what am doing so wrong

my fingers trip on the keys now,
and all i can think of is you
the words are hidden somewhere-
in the pain and despair
behind a window that hasn’t a view

and tonight i’m gonna be lonely
oh tonight i’m gonna be scared
when I wake-
i’ll be the only - survivor
in a world that’s no longer there

with a heart that’s seen its share of sadness
and a million stories to tell
i need something to halt all this madness
`cause alone- i’m not doing so well

i’m getting good at the art of deception
lie to myself to get through
only a few more hours to go now
just to make it-
one more night without you

tonight i’m gonna be lonely
yeah tonight it’s gonna be cold
at night time passes so slowly
but it has no problem making me old

tonight is gonna be lonely
tonight is gonna be sad
tonight i’ll feed off of memories
tonight that’s all that i have

Front Row Parking

i come around the corner
we come face to face
you turn away – everyone does
this chair you see is just a vehicle
it’s not who i am
why won’t you look me in the eye
when you turn away
i still exist
i went so you could be free to be you
i pray you never see
the things i lived
you would have been proud to stand next to me
i fought bravely
and now you can’t look me in the eye?
what are you afraid you’ll see
i may have left parts of myself there
in that desert of blood
but i am whole – inside
no matter how many times you turn away
you will never take that from me
look at me – look me in the eye
don’t hide from your shame
i ask nothing of you
except to be treated as the man i am
so look me in the eye
next time
i am a man
i am your brother
i am your son
i don’t need your pity
or your front row parking

The Inviting Kiss

You invite me with a kiss
A long deep slow invitation to join you in a symphony of affection
We retreat as love the conductor summons the orchestra
Blankets cast aside
Like the curtains of a great music hall
Pillows and clothes line up around us as if an audience prepared for the performance
The lights go down
The room quiets as the players ready
The only sounds to be heard are the light moans of the woodwinds deepening breaths
We kiss as hands explore each other
Heartbeats quicken and get louder like the bass drums building in the background
Kissing your soft skin around your neck and down to your stomach
Missing nothing in between
Light scents fill the air
Matched by the conductors calling for the strings to join in the movement
Lower still
Your hands find my hair
As my tongue flicks its way around begging your flower to unfold in the sunlight that is my desire
Your breathing erratic now mixed with soft sighs and deep moans
One hand pushing against the headboard the other pulling my head to you
Like opposing forces and neither will give ground
The orchestra louder and louder by order of the conductor
Trying to keep up with your cries
You arch your back as the wave of the first chorus works its way to your wanting shore
Building and building until it peeks and comes crashing down like the sound of a million pieces of glass hitting the stage and bouncing around in decreasing decibel
The maestro is pleased
You quiver with each echo rebounding through the hall
The sound of the harps dance in the night, picking stars from the heavens and dangling them in front of you
Their light reflects in your eyes and I have never seen you more beautiful
You pull me to you and the piano coxes the entrance of the sonnet
Slowly we move together in perfect harmony
We are one
So sweet so tender so beautiful
Our souls come together where the flesh ends
Every breath you take gives me life
My heart circulates for we two
Our eyes lock half closed
Ecstasy
Half open
Pleasure
We stare long and true
As our bodies dance to the waltz filling the night air
Nothing matters at this moment
But the moment
I want to share this with you forever
You feel the vibrations of the distant storm
But you are not ready
And as the composer intended
On the perfect down beat
The conductor turns the page and the arrangement changes
You take first chair
As I sit on the stage looking up to the wonder of you
Riding me into a short but powerful solo
You lift me to your glistening breast
Pleasure and pain walk together and neither gets the night off
With the rhythm section holding strong
My mouth finds your erectness
And I bite down
Releasing my grasp as the delight turns to ache
The horns like your fingernails dig deep into my back
As I reach behind you and pull your hair
Tilting your head to one side
The violins mimic your screams
Loves arms are raising and sweeping begging the company to hold each note as if it were the last
Trying to draw every ounce of energy from each tone
The whirlwind of this piece has the audience silently entranced
We roll over as before
Twisting and turning
legs fighting for leverage
Never stopping
Oblivious to all that surrounds us
All but the passion that has engulfed the concerto
There are no children present
And words not often spoken escape your swollen lips
**** me **** me you urge unto me
Pulling me deeper
Begging me not to stop
Squeezing me with all of your might
The crescendo building ever closer
Our pace increases
Feverishly we continue
Moaning and crying out
Trying not to reach the end
Though we both know we want to
The slide of the winds in and out
The bows from the strings rising and falling
The conductor’s arms
Flailing about, commanding everyone to stay in time
Building to a deafening climax
The drummers beating harder and harder
Pounding out the last of the composition
Faster and faster the opus moves
Finally ending with the piercing sound of two nearly simultaneous earsplitting determined roars of thunder
The tiny drops of sweat rain over us
And give life to what we share
And for just a instant
Silence prevails
The conductor raises her hands to her lips and blows a kiss to the company
Opening loves arms as if to embrace us for all eternity
Then bows in thanks to the players who just gave their all
The hum of our breathing subsiding
As the reverberation of the now faint ending slips away
I collapse and melt into you
Pulling the covers over us
We lie together
Holding on to the last of a magnificent recital
As I slip into half sleep
Thinking
One last kiss before we succumb
Thinking
I can’t wait for tomorrow
Thinking
There is nothing more beautiful than this
Thinking about
The next inviting kiss

Metaphorically Speaking...

With a pocket full of empty
And a memory full of ghost
The west wind gusting
You leave the placid coast
Your heart in pieces yearning
Your senses dry and scorn
The depths in which you feel
So hopelessly be warn
On the sleeve of your existence

Weathered and rotting
Fade away, fade away
Tomorrow another day
Just reach and you will find it
Unleash the chains that bind it
Mother sea is calling
She will hold you true
Let her currents guide you
Straight for something new
Her tide is reaching outward
To a barren land
Washed away your castle
She takes you by the hand
Sail again
Sail again

(alternative piece)

With a pocket full of empty
And a memory full of ghost
The west wind gusting
You leave the placid coast
Now free from your resistance

Your heart in pieces yearning
Your senses dry and scorn
The depths in which you feel
So hopelessly be warn
On the sleeve of your existence

Weathered and rotting fade away,
fade away tomorrow another day
Just reach and you will find it
Unleash the chains that bind it
Show her your persistence

Mother sea is calling
She will hold you true
Let her currents guide you
Straight for something new
Her tide is reaching outward
To a barren land
Washed away your castle
You'll find me in the sand
Sail again
Sail again

The Path

Pausing in the middle of a pathway
that leads to nowhere
feeling lost in this forest
of petrified truth
branches ever growing
cause the light to dim
the shadows consume the unsuspecting
empty vessels carrying unseen burdens
of past disappointments
i feel your presence and continue onward
i’ve searched for you for many years
discovered parts of you
in a few
never the whole
never the true
one day our paths i pray
will cross
one day you will never feel
again the loss
a longing shared by empty hearts
i miss you though we have never met
discontent rules the land of searching souls
one day to be found…
the hope

Airport Daze

Sitting alone in a terminal full of people
Wishing to be anywhere else
I met your eyes

It was one of those glancing looks that last a lifetime
You smiled at me with such warmth it parched my soul

My returning gaze told a story you knew too well
A longing that caused the little crinkle on the bridge of your nose
You understood more of me in that moment than most ever will

Then he appeared, handing you the soft drink you asked for
The look you gave him was not as delicate as the one I was award but, it is the look he had eared over the years

That look sent me back to different place in a different time

I felt bad for you

Until I saw the entire terminal light up
She tugged on your coat yelling for a drink
Mommy, mommy…daring you to ignore her
She was beautiful and so was your glow

Now I know

Last call for boarding of flight………
I walked to my gate readying myself for the long trip home

I had to take one last look

You were watching me and I was happy to discover that

Looking passed his shoulder you mouthed to me the most awful word in the English language.
Goodbye.
You will never know how great I thought that was

My smile confused the robot at the door of the plane
She forgot to thank me for choosing their airline

Oh well, I’ll find my seat and dream of a different place in a different time…

As the plane was about to taxi out, she approached me
Sir I am going to have to ask you to hand over your drink

Being confused by her request, I made the mistake of asking why and started a chain of events that I still can not believe today

At this point she informed me that she did not have to answer to me and it would be best if I simply gave up my drink or she would have me removed from the plane

My laughing was in no way to belittle her I was still in a daze over my encounter in the airport she however, took it as an attack on her authority (when did she get authority anyway)

When we heard the engines shut down I knew it was not going to be my night

The gentlemen sitting next to me asked if she was kidding with this whole thing

The smirk on her face said more to us that any words she could have mustered

I told her she is little more than a waitress in a tube and that she was treating her customers pretty rudely

Being thrown to the floor of plane is not a pleasant experience and the two men made sure I knew this

These were not the kind of handcuffs I was used to either. Sure the pain was there but, there was no pleasure to follow

As I was being dragged down the aisle the applause was unnecessary to say the least

The poor guy next to me met the same fate
Guilt by association I supposed

I told you to give me the drink the robot said to me and in the most condescending voice you ever heard she added…
Thank you for choosing *********** airlines

Sporting our matching forehead and nose rugburns
Bob, as I have come to know him and I were being led back to the terminal
Where I prayed you would not see me

Thankfully you had boarded your flight. I was hopping you took the time to throw away the drink

Fifteen policemen and two FAA agents escorted my new partner in crime down a long hallway. I was stuffed into a room that was more suitable for janitorial supplies.

Two hours of interrogation was getting us nowhere
I was no threat nor was Bob. They; just like the waitress refused to answer any of my questions

Fingerprints and photographs were taken and I will spare you of the details to the extent of the search we were subjected to (Bob and I did not laugh about this later at the bar)
We did discus the evening over a few drinks however, it was at the Presidents Club of another airline

I apologized to Bob once more as we parted
Getting aboard separate flights as mandated by our new friends at Airport Police
He shook my hand, turned and left
I can still see the smile on his face as he passed the trash can…

Four strangers forever linked… in memory

Me with my new found understanding of the arrogance within the airline industry.

The robot who is convinced she is the last line of defense to our National Security and who, single handedly ruined what could have been a beautiful moment in time

Bob, poor Bob an innocent bystander guilty of having the nerve to laugh at a situation that was quickly spinning out of control. Never knowing how the words bend over and spread-um could make one feel so small…until now

And the women in the terminal

With one look delivered a hundred dreams and counting

Sad and yet so beautiful this life can be

Wherever you are know that you took a small part of me with you that day
and gave to me something much bigger
Hope re-born

Found in an airport daze

All That Glitters

You went from 120 down to 115
A liposuction procedure that
You did not need
The greedy plastic surgeon
Was just like you
Couldn’t see past the checkbook
It obstructed his view
When a crooked partner
Cost me both companies
You suddenly had
Other places to be
You’re so supportive

You put your
Fendi, Coach and Prada bags
In the Lois Vatan luggage
With your Chanel rags
Jimmy Choo, D & G
Vera Wang, D & B
These ****ing names are
Confusing me
You drove off in a
$54,000.00 suv
Quite a step from the
Escort you had
When you first met me
When I had to tell you no
You freaked out
It’s about time you learned
What life is about
With your surgically enhanced profile
375 cc’s that make the men smile
I was your safety net play
You used all your guile
Giving visitation rights
To me for a while
Now I hear your house burnt down
What will you do with no labels around
Don’t mean to snicker
At this little glitch
All I can say is
Karma’s a *****

Me, I’m living with all I have left. Fighting to pay off debt
Trying to find someone much different from you.
See, I learned my lesson. Did you learn one too?

What do you want from me that I have not given you in the past?
Leave me alone I can’t feel you anymore. To steal a line from Tom Petty
Don’t come around here no more
You darken my door
Whatever you’re looking for
Don’t come around here no more…..

One Night Stand

passed on the stranger
who’s cloaked all in danger
a transparent allure
been here before

a solvable mystery
won’t put up a fight

not there for a lifetime
just one or two nights

approval is fine
it eases the mind

though not what I need
no, not at this time

forever, with a cynical laugh
released me from its grasp

now a wondering plight
into a dark night

there’s wear on my soul
these shoes have gone old
a search with a story
too often told

The Price of Silence

we saw them swimming for their lives

passed a tear for their strife

then turned the channel one and all,

American Idle must be on

priorities, of the night,

governed, from the right

watched as it’s people died in vain

such a shame…

but that’s the world…we live in

there was a man who had the nerve

to imagine a different kind of world

one in which we lived in peace

a scary thought, for some at least

for his dream they banned his song

and hopped that he would move along

accused him of blasphemy and worse

such a curse….

but that’s the world…we live in

the powers that be would listen

if our arms were raised in unison

but we are too pre occupied

paying bills just to survive

what would happen if we all stayed home

their profits would be gone

would they change their way of thinking

my guess is no, we’d keep sinking

but that’s the world we live in

they worship a God I don’t understand

take them to the desert kill their men

enslave the children rape their wives

we’ll give them a whole new life

the new born will be more like us

the world will watch and shouldn’t fuss

we don’t have anything they need

such is greed…

but that’s the world….we live in

“fools said i, you do not know

silence like a cancer grows

hear my words that i might teach you

take my arms that i might reach you

but my words like silent raindrops fell

and echoed

in the wells of silence”

and the world we know, just keeps on

sins of man bestowed upon

this fear that they feed us on

when will we ever learn

Flight

if I open my heart
would you take a look inside
would you keep it warm and
help me forget,
the tears I’ve cried
I don’t need you, but I want you,
to know how much I care
I can soar on my own but,
I’d rather have you there

if I gave you the moon
would it be enough for you
if I moved all the stars
and spelled your name
would you believe that it’s all true
I don’t need you, but I want you
you’re the reason I breathe
you’re the reason that I’m grounded, honey
you’re the reason that I fly

if I lost my way
would you help me understand
if I reached out for you
would you take me by the hand
you’re the reason that I breathe
you’re the reason I see
you’re the reason I don’t ask why, and
you’re the reason I fly

I don’t need you, but I want you,
with you I don’t ask why
you’re the reason, the only reason
you’re the reason I fly

Word Play

you’ve lost its meaning

left me to wonder if i ever really held it
left me bewildered

the crossword puzzle hides its truth as the mourning paper stares back at me
i don’t have the answers
to the questions i once invented

you across
me down

enlightenment, such a dark price to pay

spilled coffee on the page, flowing life lessons
blurring the lines on my face
crow’s-feet digging deeper into my soul
your footsteps growing more faint by the day

trust, sharing, togetherness, faith…
nothing fits anymore
just empty spaces calling for letters that now fulfill other expressions

still painting pictures
of a once defined reality, when in all reality
nothing is real
it’s all made up by fabricators of truth
meant to distort the view of the many hopeful participants

tossed aside
unsatisfied unfinished un everything
i rest with pen in hand
and wait for tomorrows conundrum

The Meaning of Over

It’s not a singular meaning

It’s a heart without feeling

It’s the reason men would die

It’s the clouds without a sky

It’s the shore without the sand

It’s the glove that has no hand

It’s the beginning of restoration

It’s an awful destination

It’s something that is often feared

It’s also been quite revered

It’s a hall of hunger

It’s a stay in the dungeon

It’s a beat without the sound

Its life turned upside down

It’s a never ending fight

It’s a wrong that lost its right

It’s a side effect of life

It’s something that you’ll have to learn

It’s a pilot light that doesn’t burn

It’s a reason to shed tears

Even when it’s your idea

It’s leaving childhood behind

It’s the treasure that you never find

It’s a bitter pill to have to swallow

It can leave you feeling pretty hollow

I could keep going on my friend

But it’s also a way to say

The End....

The Mirrors Tale

He started writing her a couple of years ago. Just little notes at first, nothing she couldn’t handle. She loved him so very much

It was his way of telling her he loved her. His way of dealing with the pain in this world. And not coming to terms with the fact that he was disappointed in himself and unhappy with his choices. He is scared to death of life; it’s his way of taking control, his way of hiding, and his way of blaming her.

When they first married she didn’t know he would become so expressive. Over the years she has come to hate his writings and who can blame her. She hides them from her friends; it’s kind of embarrassing for her. Long sleeves and a good base can cover his terrible grammar but does little to fix the punctuation.

She noticed some time ago that when he drinks he suddenly becomes F. Scott Fitzgerald.

What started out as little notes have become short stories. Filled with anger and written on her skin the bruises ask more questions than they answer.

Like so many do, she blames herself, struggles to understand, and tries to make the best of things. She finds herself loathing his returning home, celebrating his sleep and comfortable in his absence. My, how she never pictured this when they started out.

He left her a note last night. Delivered it with a backhand and pinned it to her eye so she can’t help but study it.

She reads from the mirror. It tells her he is a child living in a grownup world. That he is a tiny man who doesn’t know the meaning of love. It tries to explain that he is the only one who truly cares for her and no one would ever want her the way he does. It convinces her that his problems are all her fault. What it does not make clear is that as long as she is willing to make excuses for him, he is right.

She’ll stay in for a few days just to avoid the critics. They don’t get the meaning of his secret language. His literature etched on his favorite pad goes beyond their comprehension. So, she protects him, yet doesn’t understand why.

She is gathering strength and soon will find the courage to break out of this incarceration. I pray it is so. She has a kind and caring soul that is still intact. Somewhere out there is another that will help her heal the wounds of the past. Treat her with the care and tenderness she so richly deserves. Take her broken heart into his hands and hold it with the softness and sweetness of a newborns sleeping breath. And she will know it is time to rise…. and shine...

I can not wait to see her sparkle. My friend, my dear sweet friend.

The Cracked Vase

The sunlight that once fed my leaves,
in a twist of fate - dehydrates me.
Love is wilting and I`m dying
by degrees.

The drops we cry,
provide the rain.
To a vase that knows it cant sustain.
There's nothing left, save for,
the desert of loves - remains.

Your cracked vase lets the water by,
my roots can`t drink.
And soon will die.
Another love turned to dust.
Another vase consumed by rust.

The crimson light escapes from me,
dripping, falling endlessly.
To a bottom that it never finds,
leaving nothing,
not even a seed behind.

Your cracked vase lets the water by,
my roots can`t drink and soon will die.
Holding on to loves sweet song,
once again to sing alone.

Imaginary Memories

Though, Iv`e known your
touch and your taste.
I always look at you with
the eyes of a stranger.
Captured by your beauty and
desperate to discover you....
Again
Last night I stayed awake for hours
caressing the small of your back.
In the event my mind
should ever slip
my fingertips have
memorized all the contours
of your splendor
So soft
So beautiful
As I stir this morning
I realize I imagined the
entire night.
Where are you.
I`m waiting.
I`m ready.

Go ahead and turn your back on all you have ever known
run, run as fast as you can
for as long as you can
run from the past
run from your mistakes
run from you
run from me
you will see…
when you tire and need to rest
the past will sit next to you
and wait till it’s time to go again
so do what you do best
strap on those shoes
and run, run as fast as you can
for as long as you can
run from the truth
run from the pain
run from your life
run from the struggles
when you get to the place
you think you need to be
it will all be waiting for you
everything you chose to flee
everything, everything

Different Kind of Christmas

so you say it’s Christmas?
you say a time for joy, a time for peace, a time for giving?

i don’t believe you

where are the smiles
where is my peace

a treeless house decorated with disregard
a childless world of relentless pain but, it’s better for you
my loss your gain, my gift to you…
shed a tear for the giver

i can’t believe you

condemnation wears many hats
yours pulled down over your eyes, nothing gets seen
indignant reactions serve no one; the child’s soul is hungry
your gift to me…
shed a tear for the giver

i understand you

oh, it’s going to be a different kind of Christmas this year
of that be sure
no gifts for the innocent, the giver withdrawn
will shed his own tear

the last flicker of candle turns to vapor
shadows no longer dance but, fade away
new significance to the Silent Night
your wish in motion

i leave you

slip into an aided slumber
my last gift to you, careful what you do with it
you can’t return it, but you can
shed a tear for the giver...

Seaside Picnic

Your tides of apathy
roll my body over
the jagged
coral wreckage
left in your
wake.
Again and
again.
The indifference
tears me to shreds.
Scavengers gather
at the shoreline
to feast on my
emptiness,
as the sea turns
a brilliant scarlet
in your honor.
Piece after piece
washed ashore
I always did look good
in red

Neighbors Never Know

The cold steel against my skin,
congers images of pain
or,
is it relief ?

I can not tell the difference,
anymore.

Her silent voice taunts me to push.
Not worth it,
my heart cries out.
Is it worse to die for the wrong reason or,
live for no reason ?
ether way,

alone,

it`s not worth it.

I rest that cold killer,
on the night stand.
Exiting the room
an empty hall,
inside an empty house,
teases my empty heart.

Kicking down the door,
I rush in,
I reach.
I would have stopped there,
but...

From the detectives notebook:

We interviewed the surrounding neighbors the following are some of their comments
" he seemed so normal " " he was a nice guy. what happened? " " he kept up his yard didn't`t get involved with other peoples business " " he looked ok to us, he always waved, he stayed to himself " " what would make someone do such a thing? "...

Its amazing to me how the neighbors never know.

Fear

Her eyes,
held me captive,
for years.

They reflected to me,
images of unborn lives.
And showed me,
myself,
As a whole.

I shall never look into
another`s,
the same.

For fear they will show me,
as I truly am...

Pride

Nickolas
I will always love you and always be there for you...

He entered my life at six months old
with no one to be his father.
As occurs all too much in this world,
someone just didn't bother.

My love for his mother,
grew and grew.
Something else happened,
I fell in love with him too.

Nine years went by too fast

Remembering-
The times I ran when he fell.
Listening to the stories he`d tell.
Watching the world through his eyes.
Hurting every time he cries.

He is a wonderful child,
with a brilliant mind.
Compassionate,
funny,
exceedingly kind.

It cannot be measured all I learned from him.
I was supposed to be the teacher.

Nine years went by too fast.
For his birthday this year,
he asked.

Could we be a family again?
Now, that's heart wrenching stuff,
from a child of ten.

Last night I cried,
when we ended our call.
No, it wasn't for the,
I love you.
You will see.
The tears were a mixture,
of pride and sad.
For the word he chose,
to call me was...
Dad

Kevin,

For someone fairly new to poetry writing, you certainly have a prolific body of work!

As someone who has read a relatively large amount of poetry from “the greats” (Cummings, T.S. Eliot, and the like), received some severe (painful, at the time) critiques about my own writing, and read many a critical review from experienced writers, I feel semi-equipped to pass on to you some bits of advice.

First, let me compliment you on your ability to pour emotion into your work. If anything stands out in all your pieces, it is the intensity of your emotions.

That said, now comes the challenge of learning to CONVEY those emotions so that OTHERS feel them, see them, touch them--experience them. And by that I mean, find images - REAL “pictures” from your own life; simple, yet vivid, things – and learn to phrase your emotions in a way so as to CAUSE those emotions in the reader.

For example, which of these strikes you as more original and impacting?

"My loneliness grew after you went away;
my heart turned toward the direction
of the door from which you left me.
My thoughts feel torn and depressed;
Part of my being will never be the same,
But I look forward to the sunrise."

Or...

"Remember me when I have gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future you had plann’d:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad."

O’ course, most obviously, the first I wrote rather sloppily and the second Christina Rossetti wrote. I just want to illustrate the difference between consistent, original, specific writing versus confusing, half-abstract/half-concrete, vague writing (not that yours is that bad, but just speaking in general extremes).

In essence, the best advice I could give you is to continuously read poetry from experienced writers (which means, usually, famous writers) and observe their techniques. Copy them, if necessary, for practice.

And write with meaning. Ask yourself, "what do my words *actually mean*? Am I writing what I mean (what I really feel; what is true), or what I *think* sounds kinda good or poetic?"

I’m not the best, but let me try to critique one of your pieces in a separate post (to follow). Thank you for reading.
