If done it with no expectations whatsoever. If she's with friends I'll buy a round for them all just so she doesn't feel too uncomfortable. It is a way of breaking the ice for some people but obviously not for everyone. At least I know who to buy a drink for in here!

drinker next round is on patsfan64!! drinker

It was just an innocent offer.
Three females were sitting at the bar, looking around, being friendly - not like they were in a corner booth in a private conversation.

It may have been a better idea to ask the server to ask her...but still come on!

The whole place was staring at him/her with her reaction. He'll never be the same!
It did become the joke of the night - to everyone in there, not just us. He didn't live it down.

You're so special :-)
At least he had you to blame it on.

You know, a few witchy women give
everyone a bad rap.

Yeah, I pretty much didn't hear the end of it especially after my compelling reasoning for doing it....
"what can it hurt?
what's the best that can happen? she'll say yes and you'll have a nice conversation!
what's the worst that can happen? she'll say no thank you and you'll come sit back down with us!"

I didn't quite nail the "worst scenario" apparently. laugh

My mama's fried chicken...
her homemade rolls...
lasagna...
a great ribeye...
tacos...
burritos...
kettle chips...
fresh shrimp and scallops...
red cake...
meatloaf...
pecan pie...

that's it, I can never have 'one last meal' - I'll live forever just trying to eat everything

Granted this was only one 'lady's' reaction and I've been out of the bar scene for quite awhile.

I would not be offended if a man, or anyone, offered to buy me a drink - unless they were drooling, drunk and staring at my body parts maybe.
I wouldn't think it meant I owed them anything either.
That lady must have had some bad experiences.

Of course, now my buddy has sworn off approaching ANYone, poor guy!
He just mumbled "man, I didn't say I wanted you to have my babies" as he walked away from her.
Then gave me a GREAT IDEA! shout from across the room.

What's your thoughts on a man buying a woman a drink?
Is there a hidden message and agenda?

I feel like I missed some code or something. I went out with a few friends tonight and encouraged a buddy to go over and offer to buy this 'lady' a drink. He had been admiring her and I was merely trying to help get him back in the game.

She exploded, ranted and raved. I was mortified.
Of course, he was pretty mortified too.

Is buying someone, or accepting a drink taboo?

I love it!
I take a shower morning, noon and night when at a hotel!
I think knowing that I don't have to do all that laundry just makes me giddy!

I understand your hesitation -- you've said you have no interest in pursuing the relationship/conversations -- just stop, say "I'm glad we talked, but I'm moving on, best of luck to you!" and stop conversing.

I can tell you stories of a guy pulling up in my driveway -- from a slight picture I had posted and some info about my 'house/yard/dog'. I lived in a very, very, very small town however. Lesson learned!!

Listen to your gut and be careful flowerforyou

My grandmother was 11+ years older than my grandfather...
AND she had been his high school teacher - married over 50 years.

My father was 8 years older than my mother - married over 50 years.

Two of my sisters married younger men and have been together 35 + years each.

My brother married 'younger women' twice - one was 3 years younger, one 8 years younger - he's been divorced twice.

One of my best friends is married to a woman 6 years older than he is - one of the marriages I admire most that I "know".

Age doesn't matter - the people themselves do.

here's a Mary-ism from All About Steve...
it just seemed to fit this

"...in the journey of life, just find someone as normal as you..."

"...if you love someone set him free, if you have to stalk him, he probably wasn't yours in the first place"
(yeah that one was just funny...but the first one fits flowers )
