Summer and winter are when Montana sees the most visitors, and there's no doubt - they are both incredible seasons. Fall is their "secret season", and if you ask the locals, they will probably tell you it's their favorite time of year. The weather's great, the aspens are turning yellow, there's fabulous hiking and excellent fishing (some say the best of the year), and you'll feel like you have the entire state to yourself. Fall's also a great time to visit Yellowstone Park - the elk are back down from the high country, and the bears are out and active, getting ready for winter. There aren't as many tourists, either, so you can enjoy this one-of-a-kind ecosystem in its most natural state. Early Summer is another incredible time to visit, especially if you enjoy wildlife. Great photography opportunities are everywhere, and again, few people. Newborn bison and elk babies romp through the lush meadows along the Firehole River in Yellowstone, and dazzling fields of wildflowers make for perfect picnic settings. |

I have family living in montana, Usto stay with them a lot, around Hamilton, in the bitter root.
Then a lot of folks moved in by the 10,000'ns, It ruined everything |

I had the iniquity of having to go to Moab, Utah for a job once. The temps were HELLA cold... it was HELLA windy... and it was HELLA rainy. The last part was rather ironic, as we were supposed to be making rain for a commercial, too.  So don't go to Moab in November. You'll be sorry...

I have wanted to go to Montana/Wyoming area for a long time. I got close last year with South Dakota. I went in late September. It was awesome, simply awesome! It was my 50th birthday present to myself and people were really nice to me. Your description here just fueled my desire to go. Thank you! I may try to get a little further this year. Is late September about the right time? I would make some bear a pretty good dinner, should I be concerned about that?  I doubt I would be wandering around alone in the woods, but I do like to go for walks with my dog. Thanks, again!  |
