I live in Redneck country in rural Pennsylvania.

Generally, rednecks live more simply than most folks in the cities and suburbs; they usually like to hunt, ride 4 wheelers, and live fairly independently. My neighbors are all rednecks and I love them.

The term redneck comes from the 1920's and the workers in west virginia trying to get a union in the coal mines. It was an armed revolt of sorts and they wear red bandannas around their necks for Identification. Because it started in WV the term has come to mean (wrongly) backwoods, ignorant, incest loving morons. As I am a native of KY and now live in TX this is not meant to be offensive just educational.

hmmm- not necessarily. It's more a lifestyle thing, I think. My neighbors call themselves rednecks but they are not racists.

red·neck
1. an uneducated white farm laborer, esp. from the South.
2. a bigot or reactionary, esp. from the rural working class.
3. Also, red-necked. narrow, prejudiced, or reactionary: a redneck attitude.

...and yes, you can be very educated and still have a redneck attitude laugh

Unfortunatly alot of them around here still consider VA the south & there's alot of them out in county where I used to live. To me, the Mason Dixon line is history and nothing else (VA isn't south, it's Mid Atlantic). Though I can deal with them calling us the south, but all the rebel flags breaks my heart;^]

I'm from Alabama and always heard that the term "redneck" was given to the farmers of the south due to the fact that they were always in the fields or outside working and the hot summer sun would burn the backs of their necks

redneck and proud of it.....
originally was given to the people that worked the ranges and fields.

Foxworthy made it famous by interjecting humor on a group of people that wouldnt be offended by it and could laugh at themselves.

Redneck War,& the Scottish term redneck in the vernacular of the United States.

The Scott's if I am not mistaken had partitioned the then presiding government in America for entry into the Country and signed it in there own blood. And wore identifying bandannas around there necks, to recognize each other. Thus the term Red Neck
