Nations in Europe and Asia have been building nuclear power plants to produce economically safe electricity with no greenhouse emissions.
The US hasn't licensed a new nuclear plant for over thirty years. The US has just over 100 nuclear power plants that produce 20% of the nation's electricity. These plants produce electricty for about $ 1.72 per kilowatt hour compared to coal of about $ 2.37. In the last year the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission has received nearly 30 applications for new plants by utilities companys in 20 states. Because of this the NRC has hired 400 more nuclear inspectors and created the Office of New Reactors. Even some environmentalist are now weighing in on the side of nuclear energy. The accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor in 1979 and the wave of anti-nuclear sentiment that followed thereafter are some of the reasons reasons why the utility companys have not constucted any new plants. Yet the existing plants that they have had operating since then are considered by many to be "among the most secure against accidents, naturals shocks, and malicious attacks." The issue of spent fuel is currently being solved by onsite location storage. I see no problem increasing the # of nuke power plants. However, any location selected for one will create an environmental backlash that will prevent it from being built. I consider it to be the "nimby" effect...Not In My Back Yard.

I think we need to look at it more closely. Spent fuel is a problem, but so are emmisions from carbon based electrical facilities. While I know todays coal burning plants are much cleaner than the reputation they have from past examples, and believe we need to look at building more for a short term answer, I do believe we need to look at alternative ways to produce the energy we need now. Solar and wind generated electricity is a very viable altrernative with no byproduct, but it is far to expensive at the current level of technology.
My rural electric company uses gas powered generators. I am paying 170 dollars a month for electricity that I was paying 60 dollars a month for last year. Something has to be done to aliviate this. |

The permitting process and locating process take so long that any new generating capability is many years from even being built. The short term solution is conservation of energy....just turn off the power in areas with over 50 ppl per square mile for eight hours a day and would reduce our power bills to zero in no time because we would all have no jobs and no money

2015 at the earliest, probably 2020 but the decision has to be made now for that to happen. I think solar could be the answer for the long term future. Right now a 20,000 square foot solar roof can produce 156,000 kilowatt hours in a year. That would be 28 tons of coal or 4,670 gallons of gasoline. Wind power is a good source too.

The main problem with nuclear power plants is where to store the waste, some of which have half-lives of hundreds of years. And they have to seal it in containers and bury it. That poses the problem where those containers can eventually break open at some future date because of erosion or some other act of nature. Typically the waste is sent to somewhere like Nevada. How would you feel if you knew everyone's radioactive waste was ending up in your state? |

Seems like that place in Nevada is a former nuclear testing site already quarantined. According to the article it could safely handle all the nation's nuclear waste safely. The land can not be used at all anymore except for something like storage.
I think the best direction for the US to go in is continued advancements in solar but maybe a few more nukes could sort of tide us over till better technology develops. |
