Topic: Banning - why we do it and how we feel about it

Hi everyone,

There's been a few people banned recently which, along with the new
rules, has caused both some confusion and concern. I wanted to try to
explain why we ban users, and how we feel about it.

The bulk of the new rules focus on not
attacking/insulting/degrading/slamming other users. We take attacking
other users very seriously. It's just something we're not going to
tolerate, because there's not a good reason for it to ever happen. It's
absolutely fine to disagree with one another - life would certainly be
boring if we all agreed - but we can do it in a civil manner.

That having been said, we do NOT like to ban people, and we do it as a
last resort. In almost all instances where we've banned someone, they've
received warnings from us first via messages. Many users have received
multiple warnings. We would much prefer to educate someone on the rules
than ban them.

There will be cases, though, when people will just be banned immediately
because their offense is so great. But it will be rare.

As Iam4u said in a different thread, everyone has a bad day. And we try
to take that into account in our actions. But some users have continued
to cause problems over time. All of the users we've banned recently have
had multiple abuse reports and most were warned previously about
inappropriate posts.

The vast majority of the people on this site are good, kind, caring and
polite people. But there are a few who want to cause trouble, drama,
etc. And we just want to make sure that those few know that we'll do
what it takes to keep the site a safe and friendly place for the rest of
us.

I hope that helps clarify our position. We will not ban people
frivilously, and bans will be used as a last resort. 99% of people will
never have to worry about being banned. But when it's merited, we will
use bans to keep the community safe.

Thanks,
Mike

Well I myself understand fully why the ones that got banned did. It is
all about respecting the person you are talking to I'm sure in real life
most of the things one says in here at times would think twice before
they say them. It does not hurt to think before you speak as we do in
everyday life. Just because you disagree with a post and you state your
feeling on the subject in hand they will not banned you it is for those
that do personal attacks towards the one that posted or others that
reply with there thoughts. Respect is not that hard to give. bigsmile

Agree totally, Txs. There have been some things said that probably
never would have been stated that way in a face-to-face setting.
Computers provide a high degree of anonymity, but that's no excuse for
being abusive and rude.

I REALLY do not want to see the JSH forums degenerate to the point they
become like the forums on other sites....I know of two that are more
like war zones than forums -- needless to say, I don't even bother with
those anymore....

Banning is neccessary to keep those that like to start Drama, or those
that have lack of Respect for others. If you take away the platform they
use, then they scurry away and hide, or search for a different site to
start havock on.

I think about it this way..............we are visitors in mike and vans
home here........we are guests and should respect that.
so you should take your shoes off at the door , leave the bad manners
outside and be thankful that we have this FREE site to get together on
...............................

happy

happy i think that as long as you are given a warning and a chance to
respond to it it is only fair that if you do abuse others again that you
be banned temp or permanently

Well since I am new here, guess I should just acknowledge the "elephant
in the room". So, do tell, is it the clique (read about them in another
forum) that runs this site and gets anyone that dares to disagree with
them banned, or is there actually a fair person in the middle, who isn't
a member of the clique, making the decisions?

On other sites, the mods are the leaders of the cliques, and on one,
there is a mod who, if you don't agree with him, want to date him, or
refuse to send him money, he bans you.

there should be banning, this is a really cool site and should remain
that way. i've already had to put like 10 people on block, cause i cant
take some of the idiots on here..some people just need to grow up!

I used to own a chat site. There are going to be idots, and moody
people all the time comin in here. Drama Queens/kings trying to get
attention. For the sake of the site, yes you need to do SOMETHING to
make these so called adults behave and not ruin the fun for everyone.

And For PeekaBoo, no Mods here. Only Mike and Van (owners) ban the bad
guys. Your going to get clique where ever you go in life, I just sit
back and enjoy the banter... *S*
