Actually wrestling is very much a sport, regardless of whether or not it is "real"... Knowing the outcomes are predetermined, no one with half a brain would deny that wrestlers are athletes. Therefore it is a sport. Dictionary.com defines sport as "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature." Under those specifications, wrestling does indeed qualify as a sport. Anticipating the natural response that wrestling is "not competitive," there is a very competitive aspect of reaching the top and remaining there for any amount of time, due to the strong political climate, injuries, and fans' tendency to lose interest, among other factors. Moreover, I would argue that there is a certain pseudo-athletic competition among wrestlers in that many want to be known as the star that puts forth the best average work rate. This is just another example of a person who allows his view of WWE to be his definition of wrestling...while WWE emphasizes entertainment over sport, there are a wide range of wrestling company's that take the opposite view. There is so much more to wrestling than just WWE. |

I can see how you can think that way watching Raw all the time. Sadly, Vince McMahon has conditioned a generation of fans to see wrestlers as "superstars," or worse, actors, rather than legitimate athletes. However, wrestling, even today's WWE is a grueling and physically demanding job. A lot is made about charisma and it's importance to WWE, but if you don't have the physical attributes and conditioning that is necessary to achieve greatness in any sport, you're just not going to make it as a wrestler on any level.  I look at a lot of the stuff wrestlers do and think to myself, oh my god, I'd be dead tired after about 30 seconds of doing that. |
