It struck me today, based on my own limited experience with it, that internet dating is a lot like one of those teenage dances where all the guys are on one side of the room, all the girls on the other and everyone just sort of stairs across the room, bored.
It takes more than a photo and a short description to get to know someone well enough to know if they make the potential list. It really takes rapport, and you can't get there unless you can have a meaningful conversation, and, alas, conversation seems to be a dying art. Anyone agree? Disagree?

Hmmm...those I converse with daily don't seem to have that problem. I usually can't get them to shut up! grumble

No...just kidding. I actually love it. I think there are some who communicate and others who don't for sure. flowerforyou

Mohave...it occurs to me that you only have a dozen posts. Hit the forum conversations more and you will find people more active in communication for starters. Just a thought. flowerforyou

The art of conversation isn't dead, the art of meaningful conversation might be. You can have good conversations with people on these sites. I enjoy talking with my friends on here, I try to write a letter to each of them at least once a month.

However, as a counter arguement, I used to have conversations with a little spitfire I know around here. Loved her to death too, but she wouldn't even dream of going out with me, even though the two of us get along fine, like the same music, enjoy the same movies, and have the same taste in art. So just because you can talk to someone and get along doesn't mean that there is potential. There can be just as much potential with someone you can't talk to without having an arguement.

Now as far as the school dance analogy, I liked that. Because as near as I can tell, I get to do as much "dancing" here as I did in middle school. Hey, wait, I like this song... any females here want to dance????

But all jokes aside, I do agree with you. It's hard to get to "know" someone online.

Getting to know anyone, whether you 'met' them online or not, takes many, many conversations, day to day, face to face living in a normal routine. Emails, IMs, even phone calls do not replace face to face, day to day living with them. Trust me on this one! laugh

The art of great conversation is not dead...just possibly not everyone's forte until they are comfortable with each other.

But great conversations can lead to great friendships and beyond. flowerforyou

Yes, when the person trying to have a conversation to get to know you lives 1500 miles away from you. No, if the person lives near your town.

I agree. Meaningful conversations sometimes just drop into your lap and then you realize just how much you missed having them. It's when you make that deep meaningful connection onto a completely different level that you know you're really on to something.
